If there wasn't any government assistance, I suspect many more people would get up off their ass and work, and less would breed indiscriminately.

a very good point. As an advocate of personal responsibility, I would add that we must find ways to break the chain of dependency on the system. Example---An adult mother of 3 gets food stamps and various other forms of assistance. What can we do as a society to ensure her children do not continue the cycle.

Nope....people are animals....if they were going to do those things...they would be doing it.....and they wouldn't be on government assistance now.....but here's to wishful thinking.....lol...

but if you are around children you can see in them that glimmer of hope--- they are the best of what we can be

That's the point, they know they can rely on it so they do. Welfare was never meant to be anything but a very temporary fix when people really did lose their jobs, and those people were desperately looking for work instead of riding out the benefits for as long as possible. Today, it's just a given in some families that you won't ever work - it's become way too easy and common. I think we've just set ourselves up to offer that easy solution and many are taking advantage of it that don't need to and would find work easily if they had to.

WE have to break it. It's become a lifestyle for generation after generation now, and the young people don't even give a thought to doing anything but what they've seen their parents do.

Which leads me to a question for anyone who is currently receiving benefits of any kind - WHY are you voting for Romney? Don't you realize that the very programs you live off of are the ones that he will put in peril? You better be there bright and early to vote the Dems in.

I know that's off topic but it was mentioned in the last post...and BTW, Pansy, "freeloader" is just trolling and trying to piss ppl off. Don't encourage him lol.

I just think if you are able to work then do so. If you need help after Working that's ok too. The government needs to put the ones that's able to work. Paint schools, nursing homes or volunteer work. At least get something out of my hard earned money!

I was at Shell at this sorry ass man came in and said Do you take food stamps? Then he went and got an ale8 and something else. Pissed me off. So tired of all the welfare abuse. People should really start reporting all the women they know that have a man living in their rent free apartment that is working but not claiming it. Everyone trying to beat the system. The ones of us who work and can barely get by have to keep paying more taxes to keep their sorry buts up. Have some pride people and get a frickin job so the rest of us don't have to worry each month if we can pay our rent and have food. Dead beats!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry, but if you can barely get buy you aren't paying much in taxes. around 50% of people get back what they pay in taxes. So unless you are making over $50,000/year you aren't paying the kind of taxes you are claiming to pay, and if you are making over $50,000/year you aren't (or at least shouldn't be) "struggling to get by".

I don't understand why this country wants to attack the poorest people. Why aren't people attacking the Middle Class for getting their variable rates and then expecting a bailout? Why not attack the Upper Class for getting a $10,000 subsidy on the Tesla Roadster because it uses alternative energy. The Middle Class expects and collects on gasoline subsidies, and then turns around and complains about poor people getting money for food and shelter.

Overall, I agree that abuse is bad, but I caution you about crying abuse when you don't know the whole situation. Not all people abuse the system, and you definitely overgeneralizing. Also, I don't think abusing the system alone is enough to call someone a dead beat.

I would just like to point out that the "Obama phone" was created under a Republican President, and yet Republicans often attack Obama and the Democrats for it.

I have seen a lot of people with great jobs living a good life, suddenly lose jobs, lose their homes, and live in a damn car. People are saying cut out all programs to stop dependency. Yes stop them all. Let Americans starve to death and especially the innocent children. Let the seniors get off their asses and get back to work. Hell they ain't dead. Lets punish everyone for the ones who abuse the system.
