Van Horn mansion

Just wondering if anyone has thoughts about how the Van Horn mansion has yet to open up the wall covering the underground tunnel, or at least peek in with a camera to see how it looks inside. Seems to me it's a piece of our history and worth checking into (and eventually exploring). The tours there are amazing and well done...definitely worth the drive to Burt, NY. However, using this local historical landmark to its fullest by at least attempting to make a small viewing area would make it just that much more of an adventure....just my opinion as a resident of Newfane.

I agree 100%- the tunnel is known to exist and it's such a great part of the local history as it was reputed to have been used by the Underground Railroad at one point (or perhaps it really was that the mill owner who built the place wanted covered, private access to his mill - that's what I heard on the guided tour not long ago). They did such a nice job restoring the above-ground areas of the mansion, it would be even better if visitors could get a peek at that tunnel. Or yes, pass a fiberoptic camera through just a small hole and get some pictures. Newfane Historical Society, you listening??:)

Sper, you and I are two of a kind. I wonder what those tunnel pictures would show? Perhaps belongings of past owners or the slaves looking for their way to freedom. If they ever open it up I will be one of the first in line to be aiming my camera there to get a seldom seen glimpse into Newfane's history....so exciting! Sign me up for that tour.
