Hello All,
I grew up in Custer Park, so we did most of our shopping, sports, and general living needs in between Wilmington and Braidwood. I grew up back home and left when I was 18 to join the army, but I was recalling the things that have come and gone in my 30 years. Hope you can help. Thanks.

My list begins with:
1. When Angelo's had an ice cream window.
2. The Golden Bell Restaurant, with Sam the cook
3. That old garage at the corner of West River road and 53, that had "Keep Looking" spray painted on the front.
4. When Super Valu was called Hickory Creek.
5. When Ben Franklin burned
6. When Wilmington Drugs was next to Super Valu
7. Liars Corner
8. The Be Gay Shop
9. The Donut Hole
10. Two Bridges Ago across the Kankakee River
11. Braun's Sales
12. The old ice cream parlor by the post office
13. The old grocery store next to the post office that became a ford dealer, Is that building still there?
14. When the moose lounge was on the west side of the KKK River
All previous were Wilmington, please correct or add to any of these. Thanks

Braidwood
1. When Old Smokey was an actual large hill of dirt.

I remember when there was a company in Wilmington that paid a good wage (Personal Products) and I wish out city fathers cared enough to try and get a company like that back in town. But - they all work out of town and don't want the city to grow.

Hermes Brothers store. The pool hall where the old Chief of Police presided over Sunday morning poker in the back room. Bullocks restaurant on the corner of Baltimore and Water. The Dairi-Delite which became the Launching Pad. Oscar Strickland. Eddies Confectionary which became Hansen's. Bill Hansen was a classmate, sadly he passed away somet time ago. The old First National Bank of Wilmington, The Wilmington Bakery (they had these cookies with a dollop of frosting in the center that my mom would by as a special treat), Northcrest Elementary School. Also, remember Crazy Days when the stores would put their clearance items out on the sidewalk? I moved away about 35 years ago but still come back to visit my mother. I sometimes get sad that our kids will never know the innocence of small town Wilmington.

I remember when there was no such thing as a "seacrate", I remember when people dreamed of getting a new American musclecar, I remember when you could leave your doors unlocked because most everyone had jobs and no one needed to steal, I remember when there were stores in the small towns that if you needed a pair of dress socks at 630 on a Friday night you weren't driving to Joliet to get them, I remember when trains didn't roar through our small towns so much bringing those goods produced in Asia and Japan, I remember when people had a concience and didn't screw over a neighbor in the name of making money. All that is gone. Welcome to Ridgeport

I've been a Wilmington resident for about 20 years and don't remember much of this. Guess this city did have some "cool" stuff in the past. I'm afraid however that we have gone backwards instead of forward. Bring back some of those things - perhaps it would attract more visitors than a rundown downtown we are now stuck with.

My mom bought my brother & I both a pair of matching cowboy boots from the "Flood Sale" at Braun's...they were covered in mud! My mom used to play mud volleyball at Catfish Days behind RTM's Pub and us kids were able to walk all around town enjoying all the fun without anyone worrying.

I remember stating that Radio Shack was next to SuperValu, as Radio Shack was moved long before Berkots took over. I also remember not saying that Radio Shack was next to Hickory Creek, because Hickory Creek was gone before Radio Shack moved in.

Remember that slag heap from the coal mining days that was (is?) in a field near Route 13 between Coal City and Wilmington? In the summer there used to be a cow that would climb to the peak of that hill and stand up there all day to get away from the flies. You could see her up there every day. That was in the 1950s.
