Nearly 100 world leaders accepted UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s invitation to participate in the historic Summit on Climate Change on Wednesday, September 22, 2009. The purpose of the conference was to mobilize political will and strengthen momentum for a fair, effective and ambitious climate deal in Copenhagen in December 2009. In his opening address, Ban Ki-moon stated,“Failure to reach broad agreement in Copenhagen would be morally inexcusable, economically short-sighted and politically unwise. Now is the moment to act in common cause.”

Summit participants engaged in interactive discussion sessions on mitigating and adapting to climate change, focusing on such areas as food security, energy solutions, water, financing and disaster preparedness.“In discussions with Ukrainian President Yushchenko and other dignitaries, I urged them to help transform our global economy and sign-off on the Copenhagen agreement which will spur true innovation, new investment and encourage green growth globally,” said Piilani.“As a business member of the United Nation’s Global Compact, I was extremely honored to participate in the largest-ever gathering of world leaders on climate change.”
