Full story: Chicago Tribune

A cougar ran loose in Chicago on Monday for the first time since the city's founding in the 19th Century.

Its now August 5th, I dont see whats wrong with this. PETA can go jerk them selfs off, its illogical to let a wild Cugar run around Chicago.
Their is no reason not to think that this cat couldnt of attacked young kids if had the chance.
I dont even know what a cougar is doing in Chicago?
They are a common sight in Libertyville now. I think they feed off of Coyotes and there is an abundance of them in northern illiois. I shot at one a a few weeks ago but missed.... dangerous animals, not house cats like PETA wants you to believe.
Humans are animals too but we just have more brains and can use tools because we have thumbs and can make fire.

I live in Wyoming. I like mountains, and I like wildlife. I'm not in favor of exterminating all large predators. But recently the same thing happened in Casper, WY (pop about 50,000); no guns were fired, no one panicked; the animal was able to be tranquilized and relocated, and this is a story that has happened many times even closer than that to me. I've seen a mountain lion within fifteen miles of where I live before, and there are probably several I haven't seen. What I want to know is, one, why was this a crisis that couldn't be handled more appropriately, and two, why do people in Washington DC get to make decisions about what big predators live in my backyard with my livestock- lions, wolves, grizzlies, etc. Something like this happens in a big city, and it's a major story and the animal is killed. Here, the animals have more rights than people do a lot of the time. Odd to see what happens when this occurs in your neighborhood and not mine.

This is horrible. Just another example of trigger-happy cops. I'm saddened that this poor cat, this poor, lost, confused cat, had to meet it's fate by some wanna be hero cops.
Give me a break.

Brenda & Nick, you are ignorant hillbillies. Of course a cougar will turn around to defend itself when cornered. People like you that have no respect or appreciation for the other creatures of this Earth disgust me. You will be to blame for yet another generation of ignorant, disrespectful, & heartless children. This poor, scared animal posed less of a threat than the police shooting up the neighborhood. Cougars are NOT dangerous or vicious. They stay as far away from humans as they can. Next time, educate yourself about the topic before making a fool out of yourself.

C'mon. Cougars are just looking to hook up with young men. Is that a reason to shoot her? You can learn a lot from an older woman. Maybe the Cops were gay.

Cougars are vicious wild animals and I am glad the police did what they had to. It was out of it's element, so get off of your righteous high horse and let the police do their job.

We can't seem to coexist with any wildlife any more. We had a town cop shoot a great horned owl that swooped down on a transplanted city slicker, to see what she was unloading from her car.

The owl had been rehabilitated by a local high school teacher after being hit by a car, and hung around town for years.

be the thing to find out if the cat was a female or male, if it was a female she may have a den in a culvert or in a abandoned building,
and now because of the trigger happy cops, and lack of knowledge from the animal control people, there may be cougar kittens on there own now and facing starvation.

PS, 15 to 18 shots to kill the cat?
COME ON!!
If you can not humanely kill a animal with one shot, DO NOT TRY!!!
THIS WILL ONLY RISK WOUNDING IT OR ENDANGERING OTHERS.

That's a bit harsh, isn't it? I mean, old ladies need loving too.
