Glencoe, Evanston weigh smoking ban at beach

Full story: Chicago Tribune

Banished from public buildings and bars, smokers in some North Shore communities soon could see beaches and playgrounds added to the roster of tobacco-free venues.

Do I understand from this that the Wilmette nanny police are running around at night, when the kiddies are fast asleep, trying to apprehend people enjoying a legal product on a windswept beach, so as to safeguard the kiddies from the perils of second hand smoke?
The article in no way says there are police running around at night to enforce the law. All it says that no Park District workers are there at night, making the law difficult to enforce.
It's wise to set your personal feelings aside before you pen an angry response to something, and actually look at the information provided.

Smoking is such a filthy habit for both the smoker and to people around them. Stop hurting yourself and others smokers. Stop being so selfish and quit smoking. For you, your family and all of mankind.

I heard that the cost of smoking dope is cheaper than buying a carton of cigaretts, Is that true?

Oh joy - another article on smoking to give the self-righteous non-smokers something to do. In terms of the littering complaint, I have seen smokers put their butts out inappropriately. However, I have also lost count how many times I have cut my feet at the beach on broken glass and other garbage either in the sand or in our waters.

"Garnet Dawn Scheuer, founder and president of Illinois Smokers Rights, said towns are using litter as an excuse to enact anti-smoking policies that infringe on personal freedoms."

What an idiot!! How about the personal freedom to breath clean air and walk on park grass and beaches with out butts and ashes? Keep your smoke out of my lungs. And keep your cigarette butts off our grass and beaches.

This is hilarious, smokers can't smoke inside and now they won't be able to smoke in the open. If a person 18 or older, aware of the dangers, elects to smoke, let them smoke.

All the arguments about how it affects everyone's insurance costs and how being within 10 ft of a smoker seem a little farfetched to me.

Provide smokers an area of the beaches and provide ashtrays. Most smokers will use them.
Non-smokers, stay away from that part of the beach.
SHS in an open area is not a valid argument. In open air, car exhaust is a much worse issue.
I will concede that smoking at a playground for very small children is probably not a good idea, but I am not sure I want a law to cover it.

As far insurance companies go, they are making tons of money and only use these issues as an excuse to raise rates. If this is gone, they will find something else to justify unreasonable rates.

I am a non-smoker by the way.

Understanding has nothing to do with it when one is coerced by fines and law enforcement interaction.

Litter from butts I can understand. People need to be more considerate with what they do with them. But second hand smoke outdoors being a health risk? How weak and pathetic is our urban society becoming? Grow a set and stop crying about EVERYTHING!

If they really want to protect us nonsmokers they should provide a place for smokers. Walk on the sidewalk down wind of a smoke and you are breathing 2nd hand smoke. 15" from the building means nothing. I still need to walk by these folks to get in the building.

If these folks actually had a place both indoors and outdoors to smoke it would be easier for non-smokers to avoid them.

Wait, didn't Evanston decide to welcome illegals a couple weeks back? Let the smokers smoke - and the illegals clean it up - see, now everyone's happy.

Putting out more cigarette disposal receptacles will hardly help with the litter situation. I have seen too many smokers carelessly disgard their stubs anyway they feel like it. I have even been behind a person at a stoplight that opened his door and dumped an entire ashtray of stubs right in the street.

As for those of you that don't think that outdoor smoking cannot cause health problems, you are wrong. As an asthmatic, I can assure you that being close to a person that is smoking outdoors will certainly cause an exacerbation of my asthma symptoms. So how is that fair that people such as myself should have to suffer so that smokers may continue their vice? Let them smoke outside on their own property. That is their right. It is not their right to afflict their vice on others in any public place.

If public ashtrays are the solution to discarded cigarette butts then why do we see so many butts on the side of the road. Last time I checked cars still come equipped with ashtrays. I am tired of seeing smokers nonchalantly discarding their garbage where ever they please.

Andy - I don't know when you checked - but you are wrong - cars do not come equipped with ashtrays - and haven't for several years. I don't even know if they are even available as an option anymore.

You might as well ban the sale of all tobacco products! You can't use the stuff anywhere anyway!

IT's not a never never land, but just getting rid of the nasty butts. Is the smokers didn't litter, it wouldn't draw as much attention.
