Nowadays a felon can’t even apply for food stamps. In the words of Sister Michelle Alexander, author of The New Jim Crow, this indicates that a convicted felon is not even “fit to be fed.”This is one of the most profound hypocrisies considering the history of this country. Consider the fact that many, if not all, of the early Europeans who came to America were felons themselves. Society refers to them as the Founding Fathers. I call them “The Founding Felons Europe emptied her jails and sent her convicted criminals here as a way of ridding herself of the dregs of society. America represented new opportunity for its Founding Felons. The nerve of this nation to be so unforgiving of ex-felons when she, herself, was founded by criminals.

I work my ass off and am not about to pay for a felon to eat. The founding fathers didn't live off a fat welfare system. They worked and fed themselves. You better think again if you think my money is going to feed a man or woman unwilling to work to feed themselves. Get over it!

Maybe laws like this should encourage idiots not to cook dope, rob people, drive drunk and kill people. just a thought, people know what there giving up when they go threw with this kind of behavior. Its bad enough we have to aid, and bath all of the repeat offenders that continue to break the law. Why should a rapist be entitled to anything free, for that matter why should they even be on the street. I think we could use a little more electric chairs, and stop treating these people like there people. They are not people, scum, screw all of them. Get a job like the rest of us, and bust your ass and you don't have to worry about food stamps anyway. Yes there are jobs, burger king has NOW HIRING signs on the door everyday. BLAH BLAH BLAH, I can't work cause they judge me, maybe they would not if they didn't steal for for a living. I have no sympathy for felons. Also like most cases, if a person is a felon, and they keep there nose clean for a period of years, seven is the going rate for most, they get there rights back, with a court appeal.

Nor can they apply for financial aid for higher education, unless the law has changed recently without my knowledge. Felons have already shown themselves to use poor judgement. They don't call them 'felonies' without reason.

"an old friend" is correct. This is all craptastic information! Felons CAN get food stamps, and other things. I have a good friend who is a felon and gets benefits to help him get back on his feet. And to the ass clown up there, "Wth", my buddy WORKS and can only get part-time shifts. If you are worried about your money going somewhere, then you need to go higher up than blaming felons. The United State is funding way too many countries and not helping our own people. After all, what is wrong with helping our own people? If you don't want to do that, then you are one sick individual. Go preaching the founding fathers but talking crap on your own people. United we stand, and united we fall! Get your head on straight and we'll talk. Oh and for the record, not ALL felons are felons. Some people are wrongfully accused. As was my friend, and DNA tests showed that the system was wrong after years of his imprisonment. Now his lawsuit will make you pay! Have fun with that, worker ant.

I thought the purpose of serving time was to "repay the debt to society" and to be "rehabilitated." It seems many of you feel that once a person has committed a crime and served time they must be punished for the rest of their lives. When they find work they pay taxes like everyone else. By denying them help when they need it there is little for them to do other than go back to crime. Did you ever think of how much of your precious taxpayer money goes to the cost of prisons and jails? Seems like you'd be in favor of helping people make the transition back to normal life.

There are two sides to every story. I believe those convicted of serious crimes ought to pay their debt to society, but- when they have done their time they should be able to earn an honest living. In this bad economy non felons have a rough time finding employment, and it is a lot harder if you have a criminal record. Those willing to work hard ought to be able to earn a living wage. Those who want everything provided for them by government benefits should be sorted out from those willing to work, and let the freeloaders suffer for it if they refuse to work. A person able and willing to work should earn enough to provide themselves with the basic necessities. There should be help available to those truly unable to work. People going through a rough spell should be able to get some temporary help. It should, however, be systematically impossible for people to settle into a permanent lifestyle of collecting every possible benefit available so that they have no real incentive to work. It seems that we have a system in place now that allows some people to do just that- which creates a resentment and discrimination towards all people that receive any benefits, including those who really need and deserve some help.

We have repeat offenders because society judges you once and that judgement is forever. Never again do you have the ability to get a decent job, pay your taxes and bills and support the family you have. There has to be a better way, people make mistakes, many reading this made theirs and just never got caught...and you know it. I think a felon pays his debt when he/she pays their dues to society....maybe they should at least get strike two before calling them out. I know I made my mistakes and by the grace of God go I. Lighten up, America.

Bob, your felon has drug charges, therefore he doesn't deserve benefits. He also has 3 kids that he doesn't raise. Let him work for his supper.

To all of the potential employers who discriminate against felons who are qualified for the job. Here is the anti-discrimination statute for Kentucky. You can't legally discriminate against someone qualified for the job. And who meets said requirements for the position.

III. Nondiscrimination in Licensing and Employment:
Margaret Colgate Love, Relief from the Collateral Consequences of a Criminal Conviction, March 2007
Public Employment and Licensing: See Ky. Rev. Stat. Ann.§§ 335B.020-.070. Under §
335B.020(1),“no person shall be disqualified from public employment, or from ... any
occupation for which a license is required, solely because of a prior conviction of a
crime, unless the crime for which convicted is [a felony or misdemeanor punishable by
imprisonment] or otherwise directly relates to the position of employment sought or the
occupation for which the license is sought.” In determining if a conviction “directly
relates” to the position of public employment sought or the occupation for which the
license is sought,“the hiring or licensing authority shall consider:
(a) The nature and seriousness of the crime for which the individual was
convicted;
(b) The relationship of the crime to the purposes of regulating the position of
public employment sought or the occupation for which the license is sought;
(c) The relationship of the crime to the ability, capacity, and fitness required to
perform the duties and discharge the responsibilities of the position of
employment or occupation.Ӥ 335B.020(2).
Also, under Ky. Rev. Stat. Ann.§ 335B.020(3),“Nothing in KRS 335B.020 to 335B.070
shall be construed so as to limit the power of the hiring or licensing authority to
determine that an individual shall be entitled to public employment or a license regardless
of that individual's conviction if the hiring or licensing authority determines that the
individual has been successfully rehabilitated.”
See Op. Att’y Gen. 80-388 (1980): Conviction of a felony is not an absolute bar to an
occupational license. Ky. Rev. Stat. Ann. Ch. 335B supersedes all other statutes and
regulations as to licensing convicted persons. The licensing board should consider
