We arrived @ 9pm, with just enough light to set up our tent, knowing we were only going to stay for a short time, but we were going to make the most of it. Our family was staying there for a few days and we wanted to spend as much time with them as we could. By morning, we decided to explore the amenities Willits KOA offered before checking out by 11am. We chose putt-putt golf. When we entered the KOA office, the elderly woman at the front was rather rude and grumpy. We asked to have golf clubs for our family and once giving her our camp number, she replied,“here you go, but make sure you have them back by 11…you have to check out by then” There wasn’t a have fun, hope you enjoy yourself…just a reminder to be out of their site by 11. Once done with our game of putt-putt, we made sure to have the clubs back by 11 and our tent down and our car out of the site. Mind you, we didn’t use the fire pit, there wasn’t any trash…I paid $46 for a piece of dirt to pitch a tent…that’s it. That by the way is the same price, full hook up cost with water and electricity…and we didn’t have either. Complete scam!
Once out of our site at the check out time, we parked over in our family’s campsite to visit for a few hours before we headed out. Before we know it (11:10am), the “owner”, Helena (with an Australian accent) comes over and tells us (the short version) we need wrist bands if we want to stay. We tried to explain, we were only sitting here to visit with family for a couple hours before leaving (of course it was very difficult to get 2 words in without her interrupting or looking away, as to being annoyed) She replied, you must pay the day use price (obviously this woman is only about the money and NOT about courtesy or customer service) Day use price,$10/ adult and $7.50/ child…they were going to charge me for a family of five ( 2 adults, 2 teens and one 10 year old)$47.50, to stay there for a couple more hours. YOU HAVE GOT TO BE OUT OF YOUR MIND!! I’m not staying another night, the “campsite” we used is ready for additional campers to arrive (no cleaning was necessary), why would I ever pay that outlandish price for a couple hours to sit at a picnic table, in a campsite our family already paid for??? Now, I can see if their camp grounds were full to capacity and our additional five people was causing an overflow…they had only a quarter of their camps taken…no where near “full”. When I tried to explain, we arrived late last night and haven’t enjoyed all her KOA had to offer, she replied “not my problem you arrived late” WOW! I would have been more then happy to move my car into their overflow parking and paid a small fee to park there while we visited and enjoyed a little more of what her KOA offered…BUT NO, that wasn’t an option. She wanted her $47.50, or get out!!
Not only has this KOA lost our business, but they have lost ALL our family’s business as well. And, we’re not a small family. PLUS, all the friends we will speak to about the terrible customer service and lack of human compassion and kindness. You would think, in this economy, business owners would want these traits to keep their business in business! Being a business owner myself, I know I would.

was planning on taking my family down there to camp for a couple of days, we have been there once before and enjoyed our visit, but it was only day use, and we made sure to be out before our time was up. We were with some friends that had paid for a campsite, and they went into the office to get such things as golf clubs, and they came back saying that they were treated rudely, and told that even though we could have 8 clubs, we could only have 2 balls, and if we accidentally put them in the "jail" we would not be able to get them back. The amenities are fabulous, but the service definitely leaves something to be desired. I'd recommend hopping on the national KOA website and lodging a complaint.

It is just the kind of place where you are treated with suspicion even if you don't deserve it. And if you get confused, they will be sure to point out the rules in a way that makes you feel like a free loader.

The main point is that there is a thin layer of hospitality over the suspicion. I just don't think I'd choose to return for any extended visit and I haven't despite living here.

I had a different experience, but that was last year. Have things deteriorated that much? How about some mini-golf in town, like in one of the shuttered retail properties, so the KOA isn't the only place to play? It wouldn't take much to set up a simple nine hole mini-site, with snow cones and frozen yogurt, would it?
I think another problem is that there have been some transients in Willits that have caused some problems. So, since the owners don't want to be accused of a federal crime (since that's what discrimination would be, a federal crime) they have to treat everyone the same. Personally, in my opinion, the check out time should be noon. As in, "What are your plans for lunch?" Then if you wanted to buy lunch there and stay parked there for another hour or 90 minutes, I think that's reasonable. I think around 1:30 a person should be on their way. An 11:00 check out is too early. You're not in a hotel with your own bathroom; you're sharing with other people. You're outside and walking back and forth. Like I said, I've been to the Willits KOA & I'd go back. I loved it there. But I can see how changing a few things here and there would make it a nicer experience.
And you gotta admit, the transients can be unpleasant sometimes...

Yes, the transients do make it difficult. I'm not sure that is what these complaints are about. The general word on the street is: Willits KOA can be a lot of fun and they've made great improvements but day use is expensive per person and the staff and owners (especially the wife) are not always friendly. The improvements make the day use price worth it, but their attitude makes the whole experience less valuable.

I will not go back to a place where people were rude to me - unless it is Safeway because you have to go there.

There is a feeling that they are doing us a favor in letting us visit their camp and that is somewhat acceptable if not optimal. I object to the feeling that certain people don't measure up to the privilege and are not even worth a smile to soften the too often repeated reminder of what time day usage ends and miscellaneous camp rules...I mean really, I can read and hadn't even broken any rules. I was tempted to ask why she was so sour faced and short with me, but just left without saying anything.

If they can't take the feedback and use it to improve their business, then they deserve the bad reviews.

But then again, they probably have enough business that they can afford to be short with people. I just don't like it because it is rude.

Being a regular camper at the willits Koa, i would love to inform you that first off Helena (the owner) Has a scotish accent) second No one forced you to pay for a piece of dirt, it was completely your choice. The full hook ups are 62 dollars per night during the summer, not the same as a tent site! and being a buisness owner yourself, im sure you will agree that a thriving buisness such as the koa doesn't worry about loosing buisness from annoying, complaining people such as yourself :) have a great day !:)

There is no other place to camp in Willits, there are places further from the town.

This is not a new attitude in Willits, Iv'e be around this area for nearly 35 years and this take it or leave it has always existed in certain areas. No competition breeds arrogance coupled with incompetence. You see it in the shops around town, some of the eateries, the City government, the school system and apparently in a KOA camp ground.

If the bypass is ever built you will see many long established business's dry up and blow away....the tourist will get their supplies south of us or wait for the more quaint Garberville or on the Eureka. Willits is and always has been a road side stop, nothing more nothing less. It has a beautiful setting, many nice people, relatively safe neighborhoods....but if you want service with a smile, a vendor going the extra mile and a good deal your in the wrong place. The lack of competition breeds arrogance coupled with incompetence. Willits has been called by many a mean town.....

I am really sorry to hear you had such a terrible stay. These are new owners. This use to be a wonderful family camping area. So sad. My family and I were going to camp there this coming year but I think we will pass. It's so sad when something good has to be ruined.

I must disagree with a lot of these comments as i stay at the Willits KOA every summer with my kids and i have done for the past 9 years. I personally think the new owners have turned the place around with their improvements. Can i also highlight that the majority of these complaints are focussing on the attitude of the staff... But if you think about it, it is only when "YOU" as a camper brake the rules. For example: Entering the park without paying, even if it is only for a couple of hours... the band system is put in place to prevent random strangers walking into the parks as it is a "childrens" park and is made as safe as possible for the kids. You would not walk into a country club and use the pool/gym without paying and say that "I am only staying for a couple of hours'... come on?, are you serious? If you have any other suggestions on how to improve the safety of the park then notify the staff instead of bad mouthing them online. Can't wait to hear from you Mr Business Man! lol :P xx

My people try to stay there when on tour. The lessbian karaoke team from Santa Maria was ruining what might have started as some songs so loud we could not rehearse or sleep. The australian woman came over to complain about us. When we replied with the facts she said " you go talk to 'em, I am busy". Well she wasn't too busy to talk to bother us. When we went over to the karaoke camp them women was BIG and mean drunk. We thought better of it and were about to leave but they began throwing stuff at us and yelling " peepers, peepers" and chasing us all around and then the australian woman came out and chased another family with small children out of their tent and used the hose on them and the lesbians and us joined up and came to their defense and now we are all in this together and the kids are in the show and we travel all over and stay at KOA where the karaoke girls pick up housewives and we raid the coolers. I love camping, save on the beach. None of this is true.

We have small children who are a bit of a problem when the meds are overdue. We have stayed there when this Karaoke stuff happened, I think ( unless it is a regular occurence). The little ones were up and whining and this bunch of afrikans went roaring by on foot chased by some seriously large inebriated women who were yelling what might have been peeepers. There was an australian woman running around and hiding in the bushes and spying on us all and tripping over stuff and falling down grumbling " krikey". I don't klnow if she was the same one y'all are talking about. The show is a holler and a half. The mosquitoes are not too bad, though big and smelly. We live an hour south, in beautiful windsor. There is a K mart here.

We live in Healdsburg. The K Mart is NOT in Windsor. There are trailer parks in windsor. 'nuff said. We will vote for ronmey to keep k mart out of windsor, and folks in THEIR parks. We never go camping just because of this kind of thing and the mosquitos at the toilets are huge and really aggressive socialist nuts who want medicare and retirement at our expense and make no sense at all.

This exposes the authoritarianism in rousseau's "concern", "caring" and "understanding" todays self righteous value expressions. In this dialogue one hears George Herbert's homoerotic intendencies at romp. In the blanket encapsulization one feels claustrophobic spenserian embowerment.
