Mrs. Iona Wright "never" went or was admitted to any mental institution. She lived in Louisville for many years. However, she became ill and needed assistance 24/7 and that led to her being placed in a nursing home. She lived at a nursing home for quite some time before she passed away.

She was constantly called on to pray for the sick and discouraged. She was not crazy. Many people have witnessed events and miracles while visiting the Valley. She wanted to visit the Valley more, but she was unable to drive and couldn't find anyone to being her to visit the hill.

Get your facts straight!

The truth of the matter is this....
The woman that claimed she saw the Virgin Mary on the top of the hill at Valley Hill, was sent to a Mental Institution short after where she died not long after. Not saying this place is not holy however I highly doubt that, just stating the facts.
Truth Be Told....

I grew up in Louisville but have lived away for decades now, but while visiting my parents many years ago in a care facility there I happened to flip on the TV where there was at that moment the Unsolved Mysteries program with the info of this "shrine", Our Lady of Valley Hill. Hmmm! I was intrigued since I knew nothing of this place at the time. So I visited....then and several other times in following years. I had been taught by the St. Catharine Dominicans whose Mother House is nearby there so was familiar with the Springfield (and KY Holy Land area there). The first time there was a small group of women from a nearby parish who had come to pray at the top of the hill. They came somewhat regularly....very good mothers, daughters, etc. They told me of the history of the happenings and their own experiences of having rosaries turn gold and witnessing the sun spinning, throwing off colors, etc. and the alleged miracle of the child who couldn't walk who was prayed over by the alleged seer and witnessed running down the hill afterwards. They invited me to turn around and take a look at the sun with them which I did rather skeptically since I had never done so before. I have to say that I witnessed a throbbing sun the color of turquoise! They saw more of the spinning sun with all the colors. When I turned around I saw them and some of the surroundings covered with a gold flake dust! Later I read in a brochure available there at the time that this was one of the phenomena regularly witnessed as well. They were aware of it too. Due to my interest I called Mrs. Wright long distance from PA and we talked for quite some time. She was very simple and thought of herself as very uneducated; who suffered a lot in her life and made fun of by teacher and children when she spoke of her early life mystical experiences. She was helped by the Blessed Mother during such times of great discouragement. She was a black woman who at that time had moved to Louisville's West End. She said she was told by her father when she was young that this small, rocky hill/creek property (shrine) was holy ground and never to sell it. She said that she was unable to get to the shrine any longer unless someone "carried" her there since she was older and apparently had no way of transport. She took no credit for anything. She had been invited to pray over people in HI and other states as well. She prayed for people in her home and over the phone. The alleged messages included future natural remedies made from herbs and Hawthorn leaves (there are 17 Hawthorn trees at top of shrine's hill) for future diseases perhaps at a time when there will be a lack of regular pharmaceuticals...I mentioned the Hawthorn Dominican Sisters who ministered to cancer victims and she was rather excited about that since she had never heard of them). She said she knew nothing of such herbal remedies and told our Lady so and she was helped to learn how to mix said herbs! She said that she had applied such "liniment" concoctions on persons who visited her home with tumors on their stomachs and elsewhere and observed the tumors disappear. Since that was years ago I have no knowledge about her these days. The last time I visited said "shrine" there were still a few people at the top of the hill quietly saying the rosary, but the crude little adornments along with the small building that had been started by some man who came from Ohio to build it were in a state of disrepair. There was a lot of volunteer work done in the beginning like the steps up the steep hill with stations of the cross on the way. Who knows what will become of it. Just a humble little spot!
