I think that with the heat index reaching over 107 today, it is entirely to hot for them to be practicing on an asphalt parking lot. If those were my children, I would most definitely not go for it. What do you think?

Drink plenty of water and they'll be fine. It's not like they will be putting up hay or something.

http://www.weather.gov/om/heat/index.shtml

Approximately 400 people die each year from exposure to heat, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Our bodies dissipate heat by varying the rate and depth of blood circulation, by losing water through the skin and sweat glands, and as a last resort, by panting, when blood is heated above 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit.

Sweating cools the body through evaporation. However, high relative humidity retards evaporation, robbing the body of its ability to cool itself. When heat gain exceeds the level the body can remove, body temperature begins to rise, and heat-related illnesses and disorders may develop.

If you must be out in the heat:

Limit your outdoor activity to morning and evening hours.
Cut down on exercise. If you must exercise, drink two to four glasses of cool, nonalcoholic fluids each hour. A sports beverage can replace the salt and minerals you lose in sweat.
Warning: If you are on a low-salt diet, talk with your doctor before drinking a sports beverage.
Try to rest often in shady areas.
Protect yourself from the sun by wearing a wide-brimmed hat (also keeps you cooler) and sunglasses and by putting on sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher (the most effective products say "broad spectrum" or "UVA/UVB protection" on their labels).

Seems to me they would take into consideration that 1. It's really hot 2. The kids are standing on Asphalt and 3. They recommend you avoid being outside at all unless absolutely necessary and take extreme precaution once it reaches 102.

They should be having practice in the morning or in the gym.

They have had this heat before and done it this way for years. Some of the sports teams that make fun of band people should try this, its not easy and those kids tough it out. Their competitions are not easy and they get less consideration usually at them. They do get frequent water breaks and go inside often during practice though. However, the large formations require them to be assembled outside and of course NO ONE is allowed on the sacred football field because its gold to the ACHS administration.

I was a band nerd several years ago, and we practiced in July and August through some pretty hot weather. I don't know how the current director schedules things, but we would do marching practice in the mornings and later afternoons, and saved the hottest part of the day for music practice inside. I would say they still do something similar.

. If your kid wants to be on the football field so bad tell them to lay there little flag down and pick up a helmet and get out there. So don't complain about not being allowed on the football field. Its a FOOTBALL field not a band field.

I'm in the marching band and I really don't mind the heat as long as we get water breaks I'm ok. And I'm ok with practice on the blacktop. We work hard and we are proud to be in the marching band we can take the heat because we bring the heat. And the more we practice marching are show the closer we get to finals. So thank you Brady for all the hard work you put in are show and thank you band mothers and helpers for all the hard work you do.

Did you ever wonder how the football team got to doing so well? By playing against weak teams as often as they could. Seriously, how many of the low ranked teams did they schedule against to look like they have a better record than they should have. "Let's pick teams we know we can beat." Yeah, that's the way to do it.

All of the sports fields at the high school are used interchangeably by other sports..except the football field. I have seen the freshmen football team on the baseball field and the soccer players on the softball field. No one goes on the football field because the coaches start screaming about it.

. Played weak teams. Are u kidding me. They played 3 teams ranked in the top 25 in the state. And beat 2 of them. Way to get on here and make yourself sound stupid. What has the band done for the high school. That's right nothing. The baseball teams get nice stuff because they win. Those teams earned what they have. So don't knock them for winning. Nobody from the band spends hours on end helping fix the fields before games so drop that. Next time u feel the need to make a stupid comment make sure u know what your talking about. Have a good night!

The band work really hard and most of the foot ball players even say that. The band works one week for 12 hours the football team works 6 hours. It doesn't matter if the football team helps fix the field. Both the band and the football team and any other sport have the right the tackle, march, hit baseballs\softballs , bounce basket balls , ect. The principle of the school was in band. No matter the sport everyone works hard to get to the top.

To the person referring to them self as "clueless,"

Sorry that you were rejected by every sport known to man during your time in High School, but that does not give you any right to stand on a soap box preaching how the wonderful students in the Marching Band possess low self esteem, were rejected by other sports, and basically down and out lazy because they cannot hack it in what you have deemed real sports. These students spend four weeks in the month of July on the hot asphalt all day practicing, and you wish to belittle those who state that the football field should be reserved for the football team and only the football team.

Sorry, but I am calling bullshit. As a former band student, a college graduate, and now obtaining my master's degree I saw first hand how the school system treated the band. The band was never given anything without years of Nancy Drury begging for donations from the school board to enrich the lives of students who gathered satisfaction from playing music. After roughly ten or so years in old and worn out uniforms and years of hoping for a gift from the school board, the band was granted the gift of uniforms. Yet, the football team can get new uniforms every few years with no on bitching about the cost. Before you take a stand and try to belittle people who are working their butts off for pursuing a passion that they have, why don't you take a look in the mirror and ask yourself what do you take pride in, because from the Topix standpoint, the only thing you pride yourself upon is that of downgrading those who wish to play music instead of being on the football team.

And don't forget what they are paying the football coach (and assistant coaches). Mark is a good guy in my opinion and no one can fault anyone for getting as much pay as they can.

However, he doesn't teach anything but sit in a classroom and watch kids basically work on a computer. And he is likely paid two to three times what a teacher busting their tail every day makes and who can't hardly get a raise.

. I was rejected by every sport known to man. That's funny being I lettered it 4 different sports. I played high school baseball when I was in 8th grade. Also played football four years, basketball too years and wrestled a year. Haha your right I couldn't t hack it. Not to mention I have to regional championships under my belt. What do u have. That's right nothing. Don't hate on be because u suck at life. I'm sure I would have been one hell of a band member had I wanted to be, but I was to busy winning in the sports I played. Lol you ass Clown!

You know why the football team get what they want? Cause they WIN. Tell your band buddies to try it. There young adults, they need to learn that everything isn't just givin to you as a "gift". That's what's wrong with them. The football team doesn't get new jerseys cause they cry for them. They win games and fill the stands up. Open your eyes and look around sometime. All those people there, yeah there watching football not the band.

<quoted text>. Well "lady" its clear u don't know your ass from a hole in the ground. The football team won there district last year. What did the band do? That's right wast everybodys time at halftime. Have you ever noticed that's when everyone goes to the bathroom. So don't kid yourself, the band is a wast of school money. It gives kids with low selfasteam a chance to be apart of something just because they can't hack it in a sport.
Evidently school wasn't very important to you at the time. Your spelling is evidence that you maybe missed a class or two. Good luck getting your GED.
