I get so tired of people complaining about Harrodsburg. If you don't like it here, move some where else. And I also get tired I people comparing harrodsburg to Danville. Theyre both really nice towns. But Danville has some things to offer that we didn't and they were the first to build restaurants because of the alcohol issue, and also location. They can draw from 6 or 7 counties where as Mercer county can't. Counties surrounding us have the option of going to Frankfort or Lexington. There's not enough business for us to support a chain resturaunt here. You can't have two towns ten miles apart and have the same resturaunts. Do you think people invest thousands of dollars without doing their homework? They do studies on this stuff before they allow people to open a store. They don't just plop them down on the map anywhere. I love Harrodsburg. I like living in a small town. I love Danville as well. But if people want to complain about Harrodsburg and compare it other towns then they should just move to one of these towns. It's moronic to think that every town in Ky could have the dining and shopping options that Danville and Frankfort have.

You won't be arrested for going to a commission meeting. You'd be arrested if you acted like an idiot. Jesus folks are pitiful....

Please go to the commission meeting and to fiscal court meetings. Ask questions. Be informed.

Arrested for asking questions? This is the dumbest thing I've heard all elweekend!

I don't know that it is about Mercer County and Harrodsburg, I really don't. Other towns have left us behind. Walmart is what we are. One big store and nothing much for women to buy and my husband has to go to Lexington to buy clothes.

Does a town that festers and dies on the vine just happens? Are our elected politicians helpless to move us forward? Are we, as some have written on here, being held back for some unexplained reason? I remember that there was a stink about the modern drugstore just off 127 and near downtown. Some did not want it built because an old hotel used to be there and there was a rock wall along the road and they thought it might be torn down? I remember reading about it in the paper. That drug store is the only modern thing in Harrodsburg. I would like for my kids to live here when they grow up. Why should they?

What the heck are you talking about? We have had more than $500 million dollars in economic development here since 2008. Factories located here have added hundreds of jobs in that time. Businesses have expanded. The economy isn't great but many people here are moving forward. There's a lot more to offer than a cvs. And there's nothing wrong with being historically minded. We've moved forward.

If you think a men's and women's store could be economically viable, start one. No one is stopping you, except you. There are a number of possible locations available. I'm a picky dresser, but I'll at least swing by to see your wares.

I guess I am out of the loop. Besides the drugstore what is modern in or close to downtown? What are those factories in the last four years that have added hundreds of jobs? Don't be silly, a simple Rose Hill momma does not have the money to start a woman's store of any store. But if this county was looking to the future rather than backwards I am sure that we could have some of the same things that other towns have. I am happy with the farm, but I sure would like to have a movie theater, or some modern eating places, or those clothing stores. Other towns have them, why not Harrodsburg?
History is fine. We had it in school. Fort Harrod is interesting. But there should be more to Mercer County than old forts and old houses.

Just because I ask why Harrodsburg is way behind other towns you want me to move? You say those people who would build a business would do homework. You are right about that. The do the homework and Harrodsburg just can't cut it. Why is what I want to know. That is all I want to know. Years ago most little towns were alike. They had a downtown and that was where the stores and movie houses and such were at. Our downtown dried up like all the rest of them, but any town that you want to check out has grown and they developed with shopping and eating places and other good things. We are way behind. I just want to know why. Telling me to move is no honest way of answering my question.

They are Corning, Wausau and Hitachi. Google Harrodsburg economic expansion. Danville, Lawrenceburg and even Lexington don't have the capital investment we've had here in the last couple of years.

If you want a movie theatre or modern eating places or clothing store, start one. I think you don't understand how free markets work. No one is stopping you. It's not the city or counties' responsibility to give you place to shop and spend your money. They aren't stopping anyone from starting a business here.

I don't know why. I can't give you an answer. But I do know Danville had some things to offer that we didn't, mainly location, and then the alcohol sales. Therefore stores really couldn't locate similar store ten miles apart. The economy can barely support what's out there now. Every town can't have 4 or 5 chain resturaunts, clothing stores, etc. These businesses need to be spread out. That's the way it is all across Ky and the US. Really we have a lot more to offer than most towns. And we're centrally located between Danville, Frankfort and Lexington. We've got it made. And as for suggesting that someone move if they dont like it here, i was just making a generalization about people that complain. Didn't mean to offend anybody, I just love Harrodsburg and hate to see people put it down, or take for granted what weve got. We have the best of both worlds. We live in a small town, it's 10 miles to Danville, and 45 to Lexington. What more could a person ask for? If every town were the same how boring would that be, not to mention the economy couldn't support it. There enough buildings sitting around empty as it is.

You cannot vote it out. Once a tax starts it cannot be taken away. The city depends on it to replace money that they used to spend out of the general property tax. The Tourist Commission keeps half of it and spends it without any real supervision. By that I mean that the commission is not elected. Therefore the citizen who pays the tax has no way to challenge the commission. I suppose that one could organize an entire slate of city candidates and run them as a group and campaign as reformers. You might try that.

Much has been written about this family. I want to try to set the record straight. It is true that this family has retained the chairman position of the tourist commission since the commission was started. It is true that the chairman position has been passed down through three generations of the same family. It is true that this family operates a tourist business which profits from advertising done by the tourist commission. Having written that I want to make this point. It is not this family that appoints their males to the commission. It is not the family who causes the tourist commission members to elect a male member of this family to the chairmanship. This family is doing what most of us would do if provided the opportunity. Would we blame a hormone driven inexperienced adolescent boy if he were seduced by an much more experienced young lady? Most would not. We elect our county and city government officials. They appoint members of the tourist commission, planning and zoning and other boards.

This tax needs to be brought up to be abolished. According to ALL the discussions ( and what we all suspected) that we know the money is being misused (as we all suspected) we just simply need to have this tax taken away from from these people if (obviously) we the ones paying it get no positive results from it.....STOP IT!!!

As I stated earlier, one could band together with a slate of candidates for the city commission and elect them on the platform of repealing the 3% tax. It is possible, just as it is possible that Obama will cut spending. But it will not happen. The city is used to the new money and they can't do without it. We as residents are used to what the tax money buys and we would revolt if the benefits were taken away. We have it and it is not going away, just as the hotel tax is not going away and the tax that city residents pay for the privilege of working in Harrodsburg is not going away. The 3% tax is here to stay. What ought to be looked at is how it is spent. Both the city and county governments need to look in to their practice of keeping control of the tourist commission in the hands of one family. They also need to look into how the tourist commission spend their part of the 3%. They also need to answer the question of why Shakertown, which gets a huge portion of the advertisement by the commission, pays no restaurant tax.

The money is being misused? I've not seen any evidence to support that conclusion. Tourism provides jobs in Mercer county!
