Are you ready to pay more taxes to build on to the new high school?

Where is the logic? The Mercer Co. Board of Education voted to close a building in order to save money. Now they want to add a wing to the new high school at an estimated cost of two million dollars. They will close the "old Harrodsburg High" location and let it sit there and become dilapidated. Mean while, they are proposing to house only 1st & 2nd grade (approximately 450 students) in the current Mercer Elementary school building for one year, which can hold 900 students. Get ready to dig deeper into your pockets folks. The tax hike is coming!

no not really, but do we have any choice.here is my intake on it...I think we have plenty of schools in this county to starts with, i dont think there is any need to be adding on to anything.im looking at the schools web site now and we have a total of 7 schools, way to many...all we need is 3, a high school a middle school and a elementray. if boyle county can do this so can we...all this millions of dollars spent on having all this new technology is not doing us any good when our test scores are so low in the state of ky, once again, m comparing us to boyle county.

You can't compare us to Boyle County, remember they also have a city school. We did away with that. Harrodsburg high-school is in bad shape it needs to be closed.

So how do we stop this travesty? I don't mind paying taxes to educate future generations but enough's enough! What branch of local government is responsible for this? To which official or board or whatever should we complain?

Why r they adding on to the new school already? This is just my opinion when the two schools merged the community got together that night and tried to stop it.i just don't don't think it would do any good to try to do anything, but something is better then standing around talking about it

Not sure local government has a thing to do with it. The school board holds the power. I may be mistaken, but I believe they can raise our property taxes by 4% per year. The school board makes that decision and they vote on it. If they wanted to raise it by more than 4%, the community would have to be allowed to vote on it. It is my understanding that these additional classrooms would max out the school's bonding capabilities. This would leave no financial safety net.

There are different accounts of money in the school district--general funds, building funds, etc. the district is low in general funds (which are used to pay salaries, building upkeep/bills, etc), while the building fund (used strictly for renovating/building/paying bonds on buildings) has a lot of money due to a tax decision that was made by a superintendent years ago to put more tax $$ into the building fund. Boyle Co. is the exact opposite. They have a large amount in their general fund, but not a dime to build on. The district isn't stupid enough to close one building and build onto another--any idiot knows that sounds stupid. I heard this directly from Dennis Davis because I was curious and ASKED him. Imagine that...going to the source instead of posting on here.

Did you not read the paper, general fund has 6.5 % state requires the board to have 2%. I heard no new taxes for building rooms onto hs. This decision will safe the general fund money in transportation, staff and utilities. Let the current Board and Dennis improve our school

Congratulations. You somehow found a way to connect improving the pitiful Mercer County school system with illegals and terrorists (which you managed to merge). Well played! It just goes to show that you should never misunderestimate the paranoid-delusional right wingers.

It is still all tax payer money. Dennis Davis is real good at telling people what they want to hear.
