The copy on the web captured a good portrayal of the public sentiment about this project. Too bad that the Courant only covers Willington when it's a controversial issue, and never any coverage of the routine issues that face a small, Northeastern town.
As far as the bridge project goes, I also would like to see the DOT consider relocating the bridge farther North and remove some of the curves in Route 74 between the bridge and I-84. I did not bring it up because I had a PZC meeting at 7:30 and I also realize that it would be an extremely unpopular idea from the DEP's perspective, given the magnitude of wetland impact. This impact could be minimized by elevating Route 74 over the entire wetland area and over the railroad tracks, reconnecting at the current Route 74 / Route 32 intersection. Kinda like France's Millau bridge ( http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/3759307.stm ), but on a much smaller scale. But then this would really isolate Willington's only retail center, even worse than the detour would. It would also push the cost far beyond the project's current estimate.
I hope that the Courant will continue to follow this issue and keep the citizens informed of the DOT's progress and the reasons for their decisions.
