It's too bad this story is turning up 6 years later in the Topix story list - Willimantic has done a lot to recover from the Courant's smear campaign, abetted by MSNBC, labeling this little city Heroin Town. The hotel has been cleared out and cleaned up. The city has made huge strides in eradicating the heroin problem, and Willimantic should be applauded for its arts magnet school, its university, its beautiful Victorian homes, it's huge Third Thursday street fests, and a host of caring and hardworking community volunteers. This kind of National Enquirer reporting has a lot to do with the Courant going bankrupt.

To the comment from the resident of Chaplin - your attitude is typical of people who know nothing about Willimantic. I moved here three years ago, after living in Mansfield for about 26 years. I used to be afraid of Willimantic, myself. I now love the place and the people who live here. Again, I point to everything good about this little city that I have learned since moving here. I live in what is considered one of the worst areas of Willimantic (off Milk Street) and I have learned that my neighbors - most of whom are Hispanic - get up and go to work everyday (as do I) and send their kids to school and - guess what?- they don't do drugs... I am guessing that the people you are referring to, that you see downtown, are homeless or poor. The fact that you'd make such a cruel comment about them is sad. Willimantic has the only homeless shelter/no freeze shelter and low-income housing in the northeast part of the state, so of course there will be more of these people here - versus a tiny town like Chaplin which, however, like everyplace else, has its share of drug users, troubled kids, alcoholics, mentally ill, unemployed and people indulging in illegal behavior behind closed doors - and I am willing to bet you know some of these people. Your high school, by the way, nearly lost its accreditation, and two other towns are trying to pull out of the regional school system, so Chaplin has its own troubles.

The town listed under your name is Chaplin, not Willimantic so that's why I assumed you live in Chapline. That you live in Willimantic and still think the way you do is too bad. And the fact that you think I 'flipped out' or that I am 'mad' at you, tells me you don't know how to have a discussion in which someone disagrees with you. I explained why I don't agree with you. And I said I think it's sad that you are so hateful towards people. That's not flipping out. At this point, though, my wish for you is that sometime in the near future, you walk a mile or two in the shoes of the people you are calling trash- I think that's the only thing that will make an impression on you.

Your an ass. I bet you are a nobody. Probably a lazy piece of trash sitting around with your hand out because you think everyone owes you something.
