I was driving westbound on I-96 Thursday night and I,m pretty sure that it was indeed an F-2 or 3 tornado that crossed the highway directly ahead of me and flipped that semi. It was dark, so spotting the actual funnel was impossible, but from the hail and debris on the roadway, I figure it passed within 1/2 mile or so of me. Rain was falling so hard that it was 2 or 3 inches deep on the concrete simply because the water could not run off quickly enough. I had just slowed to 45 mph or so and passed several stopped vehicles on the shoulder when ferocious cross winds slammed into my vehicle from the left, nearly blowing me across 2 lanes. The hurricane strenght rainfall became completely horizontal, hitting my back window harder than the windshield, which seemed really odd when moving forward at nearly 50 mph! I slowed more and put the hazards on, considering stopping and maybe even taking cover as light debris and leaves became mixed with the rain, which was now blowing across I-96 at probably 75 or 80 mph. I heard what might have been the roar of a tornado, but it was hard to tell with huge raindrops and bits of trees pounding my car with deafening fury. But then, within 30 seconds or so, it all suddenly stopped, leaving only medium-light rain with relatively calm winds. Less than a minute later I came upon the accident scene with the tractor-trailer blown all over the median, and I could see emergency vehicle lights approaching up eastbound 96. Over the next several minutes I passed a steady stream of fire, police, paramedic, and heavy tow vehicles all responding to the accident. I hope that guy is OK.
So, did I narrowly escape a head-on with a twister? You tell me.- I feel pretty lucky that I'm only commenting on the news and didn't become the news.

OMG!We were traveling on I-96 about 9pm with heavy winds and hard rain. Stupid to drive in that. We had been up at school MSU and picked up our freshmen daughter. While leaving through campus the tornado sirens were blasting. We left anyway. How very stupid of us! My husband and his lead foot thought he could "out-run" the storm. Indeed, when we hit home in Novi, all was calm. We feel very lucky to all be alive and will never ignore a siren again. We are so very happy for that baby boy who was found alive with no serious injuries. God was indeed in and around Williamston Michigan Thursday night! Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family who lost their dear loved ones. They looked so happy in their pictures.
