To those who voted against. If your home catches fire and burns to the ground don't blame the ill equipped fire departments of the county blame yourself for not giving up that extra $5 it would have cost you if this had passed.

I voted against it. If the Mingo County Commission hadn't "spent" $350,000 + on the coal house maybe the county would have had extra money for the fire departments. Or for that matter if they hadn't spent $30,000 on the front door. Mingo county will NEVER change.

I'll go you one better, I was told that if it passed, they were going to create a new job in the Court House, to oversee the money. That's all we need is another drone for the taxpayers to keep up. Why not take the extra coal severance tax that they will be getting next year, and spend it on the Fire Depts.

‎"'I want to thank those people who supported us,' Chief Mounts said.'And those who didnít, well, we will still be there to help you tomorrow.'"

That's a very respectable statement. I'd say something like, "Thanks to those who supported us. To those who didn't: if your house ever catches fire, the only thing I'll be bringing is the marshmallows."

Guess we know who won't be getting a job at the Court House now.

Congratulations folks. Several VFD's may close now and your homeowners is going up. Good job!

Several volunteer fire departments in Mingo County may be forced to shut down after an excess tax levy failed at the polls on Tuesday.

The levy would have brought in about $1 million a year to help pay for Mingo County's 10 volunteer fire departments and one paid department. The fire levy was on the special gubernatorial election ballot on Tuesday.

According to the Mingo County Clerk's Office, 2,609 people voted in favor of the fire levy, while 1,901 voted against. Although more people voted for the levy than against it, the measure required a 60 percent majority to pass.

Tuesday's results were just shy of that number, with about 58 percent voting in favor of the levy.

Local fire officials said Mingo County's fire departments were counting on the levy for funding. Some may be forced to close, raising insurance rates for homeowners, fire officials said.

It is unclear whether local officials will put the levy back on the ballot.

Every volunteer fire department in the county should close now. Then listen to the minority cry about having to pay higher insurance.

Like someone said, they spent $350,000 on the Coal House, why wasn't this money given to the fire depts. And, why can't the County give the extra coal severance tax they will start receiving next June to the fire depts. They shouldn't try to squeeze more money out of the people who are living below the poverty level. Pretty soon you won't be able to own a home to burn down.

They spent $315,000, to rebuild a cultural icon. So you think they should just have boarded it up, or leveled it?
http://www.wvmetronews.com/news.cfm...

These are not either or projects. You don't leave an icon like that as a burned out hull and you shouldn't risk losing your VFD over a few dollars of tax.

The coal severance increased funding can only be used on economic development and infrastructure projects.
