It's ironic, but sad, that the city council in America's birthplace of liberty and hard-fought freedoms is contemplating what is nothing less than an attempt to restrict free speech.

The city of Williamsburg has always stated that as long as the preachers remain in the public right of way they can exercise their freedom as speech and no one can bother them. Unfortunately their voices travel far beyond the public areas and their speech often is a violation of the rights of others to walk down the street without harassment and insult. Visitors to Colonial Williamsburg complain constantly and ask CW to do something about these bothersome tirades but their hands are tied because it is considered free speech. It is a dilemna to determine what constitutes free speech and whether it infringes on the rights of others; so the city should not be condemned for trying to come up with a solution that infringes on no one's rights. It may be an impossible task and may need to be decided at a higher level than city government.

We saw this freakshow last year at Christmas time and were embarrased to be locals. We called and complained to CW and they said there was nothing they could do. We then told them we would be skipping CW when we take people on a tour of our area. We don't want people to get the idea that we allow this sort of thing in our lives. This is not an accurate depiction of what Virginians are.

We made a video of this to post on YouTube, but we then found several were already there. This has been going on for a few years now. If common sense won't stop these haters from spewing their filth, then maybe enough threats of revenue loss for CW will.

CW cannot do anything about this matter. The streets do not belong to CW but are public streets and are controlled by the city.
