Where is the CNU police during all of this. I think that if the CNU police department steps up this problem would cease. JMO

I live on South Moores lane across from CNU. I have went to the home of a cnu student about problems I had with them. Did it work NO!!!!!! They can be very nice to your face but the next night lets party again. But since then they have moved out:) I agree with all the things that have been in the works about the area. The students have to understand they will be older one day and may be able to see what these people are talking about.

CNU Police is responsible for the CNU campus, not the neighborhoods. CNU Students who live off campus are just that...OFF campus and, therefore, the Newport News Police (and everyone else, for that matter) need to treat them as they would any other Newport News citizen.

I have lived in the Sweetbrier/ Glendale area for 25 years. Since Trible took over, he has transformed CNU from a great community resource to a "party school" with a major east coast reputation. Particularly in Northern VA, CNU is considered "the place" by parents wanting their spoiled kids far enough away, but not too far so as to be inconvenient for periodic trips to and from home.

The comment made by Heggie and Evans clearly show why young folks are failing America- selfishness. It is all about them. Their "college experience" is way more important than the rights of folks living on Paddock Drive to enjoy living in nice neighborhood. Forget the fact that these kids routinely break laws regarding alcohol consumption and public order. I have personally witnessed massive CNU parties where as many as 30 well meaning kids, mostly underage, were milling about the middle of Sweetbrier Dr. consuming alcohol talking on cell phones and blocking traffic.

Aside from the partying, noise, and traffic these "well meaning" CNU kids routinely litter the streets with bottles, food wrappers, and any thing else they don't feel like tossing in a trash can. I wonder what Heggie and Evans real homes look like. I guess litter is also part of the "college experience".

As far as the city goes, Council and the Manager let Trible run over the adjacent neighborhoods like a Mack truck. CNU should not have been allowed to expand at their current location. If Trible wanted a legacy that everyone will fondly remember, he should have moved CNU to Northern Newport News and away from neighborhoods. The city could have negotiated a land swap with Trible and used the current location for more homes or offices. But, I guess Towne Bank and other local financial and legal concerns having interest in the expansion of CNU was more important than the poor tax paying folks who live next to "Party Town USA".

To City Council- too little too late.
To Paul Trible- your legacy is tarnished beyond repair.
To the students- it's not all about ME.

I love how the article stated that we have to realize that "this is a college town." So, basically, we're supposed to just deal with the fact that CNU students are a bunch of slobs who do nothing but party? That is the biggest bunch of bull I've heard in a long time.

I went to CNU and graduated from there in 2005. I NEVER acted like that when I went there. I knew people who did, and I choose not to associate with them. It's not all CNU students. The problem is that these students no longer value the education that they're receiving but instead value the "college experience." Forget the "experience;" college is there so that you can get a degree, get a job, and become a contributing member of society. I am so glad that I didn't live on campus or in the housing surrounding. I lived at home, with my parents, and commuted every day. It taught me the value of an education and what it means to be responsible, something that these students seem to be lacking.

Oh wait, that's right, they have no responsibility because most of the students nowadays are kids from NoVA whose parents pay for their college education. How can you value something that you don't have any investment in?

*sigh* I'm done ranting. I just can't stand it when a group of students like this makes the rest of the college look bad.

First, Newport News is not a college town. It is a city that has a college in it. Secondly.....reading the article I have one thing to say...MY GOD WHAT A PAIR OF PIGS!! The health department would have a field day with the conditions described. Bateman says the city needs to cooperate with CNU....he has it backwards...CNU needs to cooperate with the city. Period.

Did no one from the paper have the brass to try to interview King Trible about this, or is he so ensconced on his ivory tower that he is unapproachable? Come on DP...go to the top!!

Start fining the owners of these homes who are riddled with trash and unkept lawns. It takes the taxpayers money to send out officers to babysit these 18-21 year olds. Some of our officers are only 3-4 years older than they are. The sad part is the Seniors are having parties with Freshman, Sophmores and Juniors attending. Underage drinking? The apron strings are cut so their mentality is "Party On". Hit the owner's in the wallet. Maybe they will screen their tenants better and some of the revenue will come back to the city.

College town??? Ask anyone out of the city here what they heard, think or know about Newport News and they will tell you it is a crime ridden city that has many issues. No one EVER says it is a college town or brings up CNU.

See, that's part of the problem...this "kids will be kids" mentality. When are we going to make them take responsibility for their actions and stop letting them get away with lame excuses like "it's a college town" and "it's our senior year?" Just because it's your senior year in college doesn't mean that you have to act stupid and be a disgrace to your neighborhood.

I would like to clear some things up. First off, Heggie does not live in that house, (only 3 people live there). Second of all, the individual who was interviewed and does live there is not a representative sample of the other 2 residents. 2nd of all, it is not all CNU students who live there. While 2 college students and a recent graduate may not have the coordination of a long established family at getting chores done around the house, this is a learning process for us and we are getting better at it. The fact is, we have made every effort to comply with community requests, for example you will never find loud music coming from this house at night. Another example is that every effort is made to ensure that cars in front of the house have permits or are parked in the drive.

Oh these two are just NASTY!! What does being NASTY have to do with being college students. Anyway they are not kids if they are seniors. They are suppose to be adults according to their age. So they are just NASTY adults who have NO respect for their neighbors. There is nothing wrong with partying but keep the party within, especially since the entire neighborhood was not invited. Who made up the rule/law that being a college student meant that you are suppose to PARTY?

What actually happens when the NNPD show up at these parties? Are they just slapping wrists or actually fining the students? Isn't someone keeping a record of houses that recieve complains? Are they getting increased fines each time they are turned in or are the NNPD just telling them to be quiet? Are the landlords being fined? Isn't there a limit on how many people can assemble in one spot without a licence? Don't you get a ticket for having a live band without a licence? what is the curfew for noise in newport news? Did the Government lower the drinking age to 18? is it legal to ride your skateboard down the middle of the street when cars are trying to go down the road? Walking through neighbors yards because your to lazy to use the street? Dropping your trash where you like? What pamplet? We never got a pamplet? What number do people call to complain?

Well, "second of all", did you actually live a house when you were growing up or what? And, "first of all", did you live with other people in that house? "Fourth of all", I hope that it didn't take four years of college to "learn" to cut grass or throw trash away. But it's a good sign that you are optimistic and getting better at it (umm, "last of all").

This is spot-on. The school came up in the city. The city didn't build around the school. It would be interesting to hear Trible's take on this.

Yes, I grew up in a house, actually as the oldest of a large family (and there were days when the house was a bit of a mess but overall things worked prety smoothly to prevent that from happening). Part of the reason it worked so well is we were family and there were authority figures (parents) who enforced certain requirements (doing dishes, chores, etc). In our situation, there is no one with presumed authority so, it takes a little more work to coordinate who will do what tasks. The fact is, we are working on it. On a side note I think certain comments in this article are VERY detrimental to the image of CNU students and are in NO was representative of the majority of students. I wish they would have taken the time to interview me or the other resident of the house.

The "entitlement" theory has trickeled down thru the CNU "family". King Trible believes that he should have everything like he wants it and his students think they should "have and do" as they want too. Why should they care about the taxpaying citizens of the city?"I exist, therefore I should have". I am glad to see Riverside citizens getting involved. My mom and many of her Riverside neighbors have been in their homes over 50 years and are now being subjected to "party animals".To these students, we are residents, you are just visiting!

Your reaction merely sets to light the bias with which this article is written. Hirschbauer obviously wants to play politics, not journalism. I agree--Come on DP!
I am just wondering when Paddock Drive became a gated community? With all of these living restrictions where is the pool and the gym?
This rhetoric that is being tossed around by the residents and politicians smells of discrimination. Replace "student" with any other viable demographic in the United States and you would have ACLU all over this place.

Resident...what about some personal responsibility? If you see a mess, clean it up! Don't sit around and wait for an "authority figure" to tell you what to do! You can rest assured as you go through life, you can't always depend on having someone there to tell you what/how to do things. Life lesson #1.

Daily Horoscope for December 3

Capricorn

With dark Pluto under pressure in your sign, this rather grave mood has been colored by the current state of a relationship. It isn't going as well as you would like, probably because you're feeling distanced. It's an inward-looking phase, full of obstructions, but best not to worry about things that might never happen, nor to stew about problems that are little more than ancient history. It's the festive season, so raise the cup of kindness and help those less fortunate than yourself.
