There are no panthers in Kentucky according to KY Fish and Wildlife. If there were they would eat large animals such as deer and cows. They also live in warmer climates.

Does anyone remember a place called sheep hollow up on 92 in Yaden? On a full moon you could see what looked like a person hanging from a noose. That place was supposedly haunted.

thanks for the information! ill see what i can find out about eugene siler. im planning a trip to the mulberry/gatliff area sometime in the near future. i grew up in williamsburg, but i havent been to the mulberry area since i was very young. hopefully, i can interview some of the older people in the area.
is it possible that the creature is related to the coal mines in some way? or perhaps something that was released from deep inside the mountains during the coal-mining operation? id love to hear your opinions on this.
The Miners delved too greedily and too deep.
You know what they awoke in the darkness of Gatliff. Shadow and Flame! This is the first sighting since the third age.

you better talk to your daddy again - Nevisdale is not on Poplar Creek it is just down the road from Gatliff - no mountain to cross

I Have heard all the stories... And I beleive them as much and the bigfoot stories. Which is not at all. But what I actually wanted to point out is the fact that people have said for many years that there are black panthers around here. What people dont know is a black panther is one that isnt very uncommon in (places where panthers actualy live) which is not here in Whitley CO for sure. If we did live in an area where panthers lived it wouldnt be likely for you to see an actual black panther. So how come we have so many here? lol And why hasnt someone shot or trapped one yet? the worst thing we have here are coyots. Wich in packs can take down large farm animals. like all the ones that have been killed by a "black panthers" in the past. Ive been coon hunting for many years. I have yet to see anymore than a coyot or black bear. No one i know of have ever had a dog tree a panther either. Cause they dont live around here. Do a lil research u will see.

If u ever been to mulberry or verne louden that area you can find out alot. It is said that a lady with the last name of poor a witch, controlled it that is what has been believed by some. They say when she died people did'nt see it anymore. others say it is a demon looking black thing that will chase you. One guy years ago was riding his mule when it came up and put fire around him it kept him there alnight he was scared half to death. I never have heard of it killing eventhough it is possibe. You need to speak to the older folk and alot of them have passed all we have is stories of what happened, however there are a few older folk left thats seen it. Others say they think it was trapped in a well. HOwever if you go on possum hollar (now called popular creek rd on the map) I once seen a black looking thing that covered the car ME and a few of my friends. we about wrecked then it was gone just like that. I know someone riding thru there one night around the 60's that had something that looked like fire come over the car on possum hollar and they wrecked it dissapeared as soon as it appeared them girls had to walk to get help they were scared out of their witts almost!. I've thought about doin a documentary on it. But did'nt. Alot of the stuff I've read about it being a panther is false I have never heard of it screaming like a women! or baby. But It is huge much bigger than a panther.People around here knows what panthers look like. I Dont know if what I seen was the black thing. And there is alot of paranormal activity that goes on around here anyway. I live at verne I used to walk around alot at night in the late 80's early 90's with the other girls and they have seen alot with me like woods graveYard looking like a different place stones that was'nt normally there. And have you heard about the pine thickets above nevisdale school? I have seen stuff there that would almost make the hair stand up on the back of your neck we ran from stuff alot. my friend used to live behind the thikets so we seen alot there. The house has now burned that was there. Some of the older houses on Verne are or used to be haunted. HOpe this helps. If you want more you could put your address on here alot of people doe's not want to put their names, phone numbers or anything like that on a public forum.
I think this Mulberry Black thing is just a old wise Lie, I lived in mulberry, verne, gatliff, possum hollow, rocks springs, & popular creek, I use to walk the roads all hours of the night, go into cemetery's and all, never once have I ever saw anything such as this silly thing called mulberry black thing..I think it was candy a.s.s ppl who was scared of their own shadow, so they automatically thought they seen something black following them, it's a mind thing..Come on if it would come out at night all the years i was in them area's surely i would have seen it. I think it's just people who done wrong and it was their minds playing tricks on them. Period.

When I was in middle school, my science teacher told us a story about how him and his buddy where fishing late one night and were headed home in their pick up. His buddy lived in Corbin so they took 92east back. They decided to go down mulberry and look for the creature themselves. After driving about a mile they came upon a man walking in the middle of the road. They beeped the horn several times and the man wouldn't move. After they got within a foot or two of it the creature turned around and slammed its fist down on their hood and screamed terribly lowed that it made their ears ring. The creature looked up and it had yellow eyes like a panther, a groutesque looking green face and long black greasy hair. It was wearing a torn to shreds trench coat and a black shirt. They quickly turned it in reverse and took the long way back to Corbin. That's the story I was told and it still scares me to this day

My family is originally from the mulberry area. I don't know the year but my momma told the story of the event taking place when she was a " young girl ", she was born in 1919. She often told that there was a "mulberry man" that often slept on her parents porch, especially on rainy nights. She said her father returned from work each night well after dark and her momma never failed to put the fire poker beside the front door each and every night without fail, aways afraid the mulberry man may try to force his way into the home. One evening before complete darkness my mom's father returned home earlier than usual. He said as he walked he heard foot steps walking behind him, if he stopped the sounds of the steps behind him stopped and when he continued forward, so did the sound of the stepping. He turned to look for the person followong him but never set eyes on anything nor any body. The scary part he says was at one stop he made to see who was behind him, there was again no one but he could clearly see the leaves dent down and there were tracks left at each step.

Another event that my momma remembered was once they were picking berries close to her home place and she heard a ominous, gutteral howl that mixed to a tone of a growl. She turned toward the sound and saw a man like image, black and partly hairy. She said the man like shape stood up on hind legs and with one hand bowed down a small tree branch to gain a better view of what she and her mother were doing. She states she was so frightened and was too frightened to tell her momma for fear the man like creature would hear her. she said she did all she knew to do and that was to start crying and tell her momma she wanted to go home that she felt ill. Her momma soon took her home but my momma said it took years to have the courage to tell either her momma or dad. Can you imagine something so scary to a child they couldn't speak of it. Good luck with your search and in your writings.

Me and my family just bought the property just across Louden bridge. On the right were the Partins used to live. Around 12 last night , We were coming home from the Whitley County Fair. Me in my truck pulling the wagon and my husband in his truck pulling the horses. We were almost to Sally Gap when I passed, on the side of the road, a Black Cat eating a carcus of road kill. Now this black cat is way to big to be a house cat. I would estimate it as being bigger than my Cocker spanial dog. When my head light hit its eyes , they glowed green. When I passed it, I looked over at my little boy and I told him, that I thought, I had just seen a Black Panther. So we decided to not tell my husband what I had saw and just ask him when we got home if he had seen anything. When we pulled into the driveway, I jumped out and asked "did you see that on the side of the road?" And he turned to me and said " You mean that big black thing." So I don't know much about the Mulberry Black thing and I haven't lived here but just over a year, but there IS a very VERY large black cat. I am not talking house cat. I have a few of those. I am talking Big.
