I live in Utah, but I was born in Florida, and my grandfather was Edward Michael Conroy whose father was Martin Michael Conroy of Atlanta, GA. I'm just curious as to who founded your town of Conroy. My email address is hypnotist46@juno.com if you can write to me.

Thank you.

Henry Shimer and James Conroy were largely responsible for the town of Conroy. Mr. Shimer donated ten acres of land and Mr. Conroy aided in obtaining the right-of-way for the railroad. He was honored for his energetic work for the same by having the town named in his honor. He also opened the first store and built the first home about 1856.

A big event in the history of Conroy was wrestling matches. The people came from all places on foot, horseback and train. The passenger train from Cedar Rapids put on extra cars to accomodate the fans. It was estimated that more than 5,000 fans attended one well publicized event. Consequently the wells were pumped dry and the town ran out of food.

Hilton township, in which Conroy is located, was organized in 1851. The early settlers were of Scotch, Norwegian and Irish descent.

The construction of Hilton Consolidated school was begun in the spring of 1918, with school opening therel October 7, 1918. In 1920, the first 4-year graduating class went on to college in its entirety. There were 40 graduating classes between 1920-1960. The district was divided and reorgnaized in 1960, with some students going to Williamsburg and others to Marengo.

Conroy remains thriving community.

Hi Jennifer, i see your post, is it the origins of the Surename your are looking for? if so Ireland is Where to find it, an ancient Gaelic Name there are Many variations in the Irish Language, Anglised to Conroy, Connery and many more mainly in the 17th century after the British Invaders of our Island outlawed the Irish Language, Have a look for O`conaire or Mac conaire, in the Irish records this will lead you to counties Galway and Mayo on the west coast of Ireland where your ancesters were most prominent.
Best of luck, Noel Conroy.
