I used to be an employee of the JDC. It was honestly one of the most horrible jobs I had ever taken. There were days that I as a 24 year old female was placed in the male intake unit with 14 out of 15 rooms full and about 12 boys on the floor. I was the only staff in that unit with boys the size of men and a disfunctional radio. One day while trying to bed the guys down I had a guy try to pin me in the corner and sexually assault me. The matter was not taken seriously and my supervisor did not seem to care.
Many of the workers that were brought on staff were using drugs on the job and were instigating aruguments with residents to get them in trouble. The supervisors showed little concern for their employees and were cheating staff out of their overtime money by not allowing staff to use sick days but instead use their overtime hours as straight hours when they were sick. Some of the staff that worked there were also getting in fights with each other either outside in the parking lot or threatning each other in the units in front of the kids. The condition of the clothing that the kids had to wear were disgusting and would appaul the public if they were to see. Many of the underwear male and female had holes in them and were covered in stains. The other clothing had huge rips and holes in them. When I tried to turn in the clothes the supervisors would keep sending them back into the units to be worn. There were also several times that there were not enough clothes to go around so the kids had to were the same clothes over and over again until they got lucky and snatched a pair of clothes before someone else. The working conditions are far beyond depressing and my friends told me that they saw a change in my personality just by working in the enviroment I was in. Although I mention a lot above that only scratches the surface of my horrible work experience at the Juvenile Detention Center. I am glad to see that Elison was caught because he did not show any care for the kids or the employees. I worked with almost all the suspected men. I was shocked but there were plenty of men and women visiting units after lights were out.
