Alcohol, really? How many out of state and country visitors drive through here in a hurry to get through this disgusting county on 321 until they see Blowing Rock? See, beginning at Holiday Superette on Hwy 321 the median grass will reach 38 inches in height or better during touring months because the county will not pay their bill to mow as needed but here it's not mowed but 1 time a summer. But they cannot figure out WHY no one visits or stops in a place too lazy to pay for grass to be mowed regularly not whenever the county feels it should be mowed. The visitors real destination-the mountains not this pathetic excuse of an existance on the map. I figure our "honest" Sheriff office and meth head teachers would be our 1st attraction here to the National Enquirer has this small town name appear several times on stories Nationwide. What is so interesting about Lenoir? Or wait, could it be all the empty factories in Lenoir that once contained working people of the NC? Lenoir was a one time FURNITURE capital but these greedy conglomerates let all of that go overseas. What could this sorry town possibly offer? Wait, let's not cover a story about our homeless, poor and empty factories and ESC lines....let's cover a story on alcohol. So many people world wide are coming here to stupidville just to drink the alcohol. My hopes for this newsless paper just went right back out the window. Key must be back on the job.

Could all these great things be why just alittle while back wall st. com. rated this area one of the 5th worse places in the nation to live?? I agree, we have alot of other problems to tackle first and alcohol I don't think is the answer.,

The article referred to ranks the Lenoir Hickory Burke metro area as the quote fifth saddest region in America. This accounts for economy, health care, education and quality of life. Everyone needs to read that.
Thanks a lot politicians and greedy corporate barons of both parties, Now go ahead somebody and tell me how and why with these NAFTA type treaties we are so better off. Maybe some wall street types are but most of this nation is devastated.

your mowing problem is with NCDOT. The county doesn't maintain roads. That's the state's responsibility.

you think the DOT cares about complaints?? Look at the shape roads are in around Caldwell Co (Smith Xroads for example). They won't spend money to re-pave roads or mow grass but they will build an unnecessary bypass of Whitnel that is costing taxpayers millions.

I contacted ncdot years ago. Even spoke to the company that once mowed here. They told me that they mow 6 counties, each pay them within days of receiving a bill. The reason they didn't mow more is because they weren't mowing again when Caldwell County cannot pay the first time mowed. Now this mowing company has been outbid by another group who evidently doesn't mind ever mowing during summer months with the 2 outdated mowers they have nor that when they do mow, its a half ass job. But yeah, Wilkes, Avery and Watauga above us get paid by their COUNTIES and Caldwell will let a bill linger until late fees apply. Mind you your county taxes are still paid to Caldwell on time during these grass growing months. If the NCDOT were handling this, the roads wouldn't look as bad as they do during summer months. Especially on the 321 beeline to better places. So, Wall Street ranked our area as one of the worst to reside? How ironic?! A place were Broyhill and Bernhardt's have homes and Google now thrives? I honestly thought a place were Broyhill Walking Park exists and THOUSANDS in city tax dollars spent would rank as the top!!! All the empty factories here surely wouldn't be a turn off now would it? Why can't our NewsLess Topic ever relay this information to us, like where we rank with Wall Street ? Oh, I know, it's NEWS therefore it cannot be published. But articles pertaining to zero importance can be? Ok, gotcha. Alcohol seen as lure to Caldwell.

I don't understand how the sell of alcohol can make a county prosper. It don't make sense to me. The money is going some where and it needs to be investigated. I wouldn't surprise me some kind of Ponzi scheme or some thing.
I agree. Some bored housewife or grandma opens a store on the square, puts a wine barrel in it -voila ! you are now a winery. Geez. I do love reading that Lenoir is on Wall Street's 5 words places to live. That is understandable. Alcohol? Yeah maybe for the "White Lightning" manufacturers but they don't advertise. I'll be glad when a real reporter will cover a real story about Lenoir.

My son was hit by a drunk driver, her third my husband was hit by a drunk driver and killed, and now an uptown place to sell and drink and drink and drink. I wonder if the officers are sitting outside watching who comes out of eateries from their drug induced( alcohol)state hop in their care and voom. I just wonder if that is happening. Now if sturgeon farm, goat cheese farm and a couple other businesses will join, you never know. Blowing Rock has several events in the summer with the draw being food and beverage. I remember when Art in The Park was a someone selling vegetables, look at it now. Turn a old factory into a brewery. Lord knows it would be an improvement over just letting it fall apart.
