When is this going to stop? I know background checks are done....but they mean nothing!! We, as parents, need to start demanding better practices from our school boards! We need to demand that our children are safe during the hours they are at school! We cannot be there to supervise them during school hours, that is their job, but how can we trust them to do that? We even have rumors of corrupt principals and administrators!

This is happening all over the country. Go to www.schoolteachernews.com and click on the Scandal page. This year they have documented over 300 of these types of incidents. They also have a map of where the incidents have taken place. In 2009 they found 464 of these kinds of cases.

It's not that it is happending more, it's just that we are hearing about it more. Teachers and students have been having relationships for decades. It happened when I was in school in the 90s and when my parents were in school in the 70s. If you don't beleive it, just ask your former classmates. Granted, we don't know if this was a consented relationship and parents found out and got pissed, or if it was truly a crime. either way, it's wrong, but not uncommon.

According to the story - if anyone cares to actually read it instead of just the headline (I know, asking a lot of people!)- the school district he was moving to was aware of the report and spoke with both the teacher and the Wilkes school and did not think charges would be filed. This suggests to me that there is more than a little doubt about the truth of the accusation. The fact that charges have been filed doesn't necessarily mean that there is actually a case, as has been illustrated here in the past.

Of course, everyone posting with nasty comments in those cases didn't have much to say when they turned out to be false. It's a lot more fun to spew ugly opinions than to wait to find out what the whole story is...IF the whole story gets reported, that is.

As I am unaware of any recent incidents like this that turned out to be dismissed, please tell me about those cases. I really would like to know the ratio of charges filed and convicted vs. charges dropped or dismissed.

Yeah Right,

You are correct, it went on in the 1950's and 1960's also. The difference is that it was often covered up and no charges were filed. Thins are so much more open now.

Male Girls basketball coach and a female player, a cousin of mine. Result an out of wed lock birth that the girl's parents and sister never forgave her for.

Female Seventh grade teacher and a male cousin of mine.

Though it was common knowledge at the time neither incident lead to charges or any type action by the school system. The male coach went on to become superintendent of schools in another state, stayed married to his wife, and is still a ladies man today.

Difference is the media exposure and more proactive law enforcement and new stricter laws, don't believe that it is occurring more often though.

BTW-I did read the entire article. And my thoughts remain "WHY would another school even THINK about hiring this SOB when the case was still open and pending"??? Just another example of how much our schools really care about our children. If anything, they should have waited until the case was closed, either through dismissal or conviction, before making a decision. He should not even be allowed to apply for anything else right now. And he "resigned" only days after the alleged misconduct occured....now isn't that funny?!

If they are caught in the act, there should be no trial. An eye for an eye. Cut off the offending tool. Chain gangs and hard labor. Rid the courts and jails of petty drug offenses, and make jail, the last place you want to find yourself. Hang child molesters. It's way past time to continue to molly-coddle sick perverts. Don't worry about them registering as sex offenders. We'll know where they are at all times: Jail!

Ye who has no sin cast the first stone....I only say that because none of you know the man you are accusing or know anything but what you have read. I do know him and when the truth is known please ask God to forgive you for being so judgemental.

mchammer (love the name by the way!)- if you know this man can you answer these questions? 1.Did he engage in a sexual relationship (of any kind) with a student? 2.Did he KNOW she was a student and underage? 3.Did he resign to get away from the situation? 4.Who turned him in? 5.Did the school make him resign?

As a future teacher (hopefully in Wilkes or one of the surrounding counties) I can't believe that Alleghany County would have even thought about hiring someone with this type of allegation following him. Regardless of his innocence or guilt, the rumor should have been enough to keep another school form hiring him. I hate to state the obvious, but if there are even rumors that a teacher has done something of this nature something went wrong somewhere. Teachers and prospective teachers are well aware of the potential for these types of allegations, and are warned constantly of the precautions that they should take while trying to provide a quality education, and also demonsrating a caring personality. Unfortunately, teachers must be overly cautious when it comes to dealing with students because of potential for this type of situation. It's just the reality of the world in which we live. Even rumor should have been enough. I can't believe that any school system would choose to hire someone knowing that there was the slightest chance that a student would be harmed! What were they thinking?! I'm amazed.
