Since the great flood of 1972 the valley has rebounded beautifully and is continuing to strive to offer its residents better and better services. Sure there are problems, life is loaded with problems. Addressing the problems and handling them accordingly.

Wilkes Barre has been dragged down by all the lawyers that live in Kingston and Dallas. It is a pit.

Wilkes-Barre's woes are no different than any other town of it's size. Certainly - it's got a lot of problems. Most noticeable is the everyday news of violence and drugs. Thats a whole other subject, so I won't get on my soapbox about that. The mayor and council are doing their utmost to push the town forward. Does anybody here think that the big box stores have contributed to the demise? The coal town image seems to be diminishing. The town has several OUTSTANDING higher education establishments! I wish the politicians would develop a better understanding and appreciation of these facilities. Other cities have and it has helped the infrastrucure positively. Better Days ahead Wilkes-Barre!

Wilkes-Barre is one of the worst cities I have ever been in. The mayor and the council are corrupt, lazy,as well as incompetent. This city was destroyed by a long history of bad politics. The worst of whom I believe were Leo Namey and Kevin Blaum. Namey was responsible for the 3% wage tax as well as looking the other way when it came to the city unions. he was also a proponent of low income housing and Kevin Blaum followed suit wanting to keep the population levels up to insure his position. Another flood is the only answer for this town. Oh, and Tom leighton believes! I think he believes he can con voters in to another four years so he gets his pension and health care for life. What a bunch of idiots there voting for the same thieving weasels year after year just because they are democrats. Wake up morons!

Never been to a more repressed, drug infested, trash town. I have 3 buildings in town. I would never want to have to raise a family in the conditions found in Wilkes Barre PA.

Not all of us are morons! I for one will do everything in my power to make sure he is NOT re-elected!! He has ignored the Heights section of the city for far too long. Leighton took away a firehouse that the city ordinance itself "REQUIRES" to be kept open. He said that the city didn't have the money to repair it, yet he spent over $300,000. to demolish a building that didn't even belong to the city. Besides that fact, he didn't need 1 thin dime, because there were contractors ready, willing and able to do the repairs for free and donations for the necessary materials. I guess people should know form his slogan "I believe" that he is no team player (there is no I in team), if he were a team player, the slogan would have been "We Believe". It's either his way or no way at all. A perfect example of this is with the proposed 9-11 memorial. He wants to spend a million dollars on a memorial to be placed in Kirby Park. Then he carries on about what a disgrace it is that people object to it. I don't think anyone is objecting to a memorial, mearly the cost and placement of it.
First of all there are literally hundreds of other things that the city NEEDS and could use a million dollars for.
Second of all, if you are trying to "revitalize" the downtown area, wouldn't it be more suitable to make a smaller, less expensive memorial in the center of Public Square?

Cripes!!!! NOt another Memorial on the SQUARE!!!!! We have enough already.
From Dan Flood to Christopher Columbus.
There is even a memorial to HBO, and Show time.
There's one for the first Jazz festival ever, plus union leaders etc.
{and that's just off the top of my head]
Any multi million dollor memorial should be out in western Pa. where it has more meaning.
If you are going to put anything in Kirby park, make it an under-cover cop or two to get rid of the perverts that are taking over, and keeping familys from using certain sections of the park.

ok so the Township rocks, although it is one big corporate spiderweb. the city on the other hand is catching up, the crack house on main street is long gone otherwise known as Carmen's and Carmen II. the new multiplex is awesome, that street looks beautiful. the new martz bus and taxi center behind provincial towers is going up this spring. theres that New Orleans themed restauraunt on the square, the billiards hall around the corner from that. it still basiclly is a ghost town, but it defenitely is improving. as soon as we get a couple mroe businesses on main street we will surely see the city thrive as it once did years ago.

Graffiti is rampant all over town. There is supposedly a law fining those who don't remove it within a specific time frame. The Graffiti on the bridge piers by Hoban is on city property and has been there for months. Does the city fine itself? There is graffiti all over vacant buildings on the North side owned by a local real estate company. It too has been there for months. Do they not get fined due to their political influence? How about the vacant, broken-windowed eyesores owned by Murray Holdings all over town? When will the owners be made to raze or refurbish them? Go through town and count the boarded up, deteriorating residences. Wilkes-Barre will never move forward until the city administration gets off it dead butts and addresses these things! Someone needs to hold their feet to the fire over things like this! Get out of the Westmoreland Club and onto the streets! Look at your town! Do something!

Uh, Sam, the movie theater was a corporate welfare deal. The residents of the city have been denied basic services while the mayor has engaged in real estate deals behind closed doors - selling off city property to his friends. The "i believe..." campaign is a scam funded with our own tax dollars. If mayor Leighton gets re-elected, between salary and benefits over the next four years and pension + benefits for the next fifteen after that, he will take home more than $ 1 million dollars complements of the tax-payers. For what? For scamming them and enriching his friends.
