i moved to cave junction about 1 year ago,and i have to say it has been a "different" experience.while i love the art and galleries aspect,it seems like people are just plain rude a lot of the time, even when you try your darndest to be polite.i did move from california, but i try to be very respectful of the oregonians not step on anyones toes, and not bring the fast paced mentality of ca in my attitude.the lack of ethnicity is hard to deal with too.it is a very white little town, and im saddened by the lack of diversity.

Hey VLee - Just an observation: I moved to Seattle in 1983 (from Alaska of all places) and found the people to be incredibly insular and removed. It took years of interaction, in school and in the community, to finally feel like I belonged. I think there is something about the Pacific NorthWest that breeds this type of behavior -- folks coming from California, especially, find them "rude". So don't take it personally -- If you like the area, try and 'hang in there' and get involved in as many community related activities as you can -

I moved to Takilma/Cave Junction last summer and found CJ to be warm and friendly. I had the advantage of having distant cousins here and made friends with my realtor. I volunteered at the middle school for an art project, although I have no children -- you can do this too! I would urge you to volunteer locally, meet local merchants, attend the festivals, go to worship services, and be friendly to everyone. You will soon find yourself making new friends. Be patient. It takes a while to establish yourself in any community. By being seen around town and at events, by volunteering, you will become known to people in our community. I am certain you will soon find CJ to be a warm, close-knit, caring community, and you will make a niche for yourself in it. Make one good friend and you will inherit many more new friends with that one person. Also, despite your first impression, you will discover beneath the "white" surface, a mother lode of enthic and cultural diversity, creative spirits, and truly good neighbors. Please hang in there. I hope to see you around!

for being a very small town there is alot more diversity then you seem to notice, you also have to take into account that a lot of people moved here to be AWAY from other people. I'm so tired of hearing people say what a hick town cave junction is.Its like the land developer who said he was making cave junction better by building track housing because it was an"ugly" place. If you don't like our little town, please, please, don't move here. and if you like it here don't be shocked that it takes time for people to warm up to someone new.

I Lived in Cave Junction fro 18 yrs and I can assure you that it is PLENTY diverse. It may be a "White town" (nice wording) but Cave Junction is a very welcoming community. Give it some time, im sure it is very hard to adjust but if you come with an open mind and a smile you will get it in return.

Well, it is the fact that you see us as rude because we enjoy the old hippy ways. California comes here in the form of Yuppie couples buying nice fields and building icky Cali style house and making this place look just like what they wanted to leave! Trust me I know I see it every day. I see the Cali stares and down their nose looks from them when you shop at shop smart. If you don't like smelly, pot smoking long hairs why come here? Please go back. We could turn your house into another X California home owners house, hehehe there are more of them every day too...

Now I gotta go medicate

Ya in da hills we come to the store to find Obrien store was bought out by a Hater and his wife...
The guy Jimmy(the new owner)just stands out in front of his other store (across from shop smart) and smokes his cigs and stares at the passers-by.
Why does he move here and then glare and be rude to many of us?

The owners say they don't like the hippies or the drinkers. That means about 70% of us are out as far as customers they care about. No wonder the treatment.
I SAY BOYCOTT OBRIEN STORE!

Yeah people come to Cave Junction to get away from the California mentality...rush rush rush. We do not need to spell here or live up to the expectations of the so called "middle class yuppies and beyond" WE ARE HERE BECAUSE WE DO NOT LIKE THE WAY THE WORLD IS SPINNING. THE RICH ARE GETTING RICHER AND THE POOR ARE ARMING THEMSELVES...We do not want new Arbor Homes and STARBUCKS...we are not wanting the General contractors in GRANTS PASS to buy the land and build new ugly houses and tear down all the trees so that YOU the yuppies can live in your air conditioning and turn your noses up at people who do not smell proper to you. WE ARE NOT YOU AND WE NEVER SHALL BE YOU WE ARE THE CHILDREN FROM THE 60's AND WE DO NOT BELIEVE IN OUR GOVERNMENT.

Ya it is the one across from the fine Mexican eats.
You know the one with the dog running out the back door, and the dirty spoon handles and the "abrupt" and "rude", "I'm tired of people" waiter...
You been there yet? Well when you have let us know what you feel, eh?

You don't have to be born in the 60's to LOVE the Illinois Valley! I'm 19, have lived here for almost my whole life, and plan on staying here, probably forever. I graduated from IVHS and I'm PROUD of it! Agreeing with many of the 'pro CJ' writers: We live here because we love it: Being away from the crazyness of others.
