Wickliffe Ky is where I was borned and raised. It has never been much of a town but people are friendly. It used to be a clean little town and the air was pure and sweet to the smell. Not anymore, since westvaco. The mgmt of that large firm has constantly paid off the city goverment to look and smell the other way. I would not own, rent or live within 15 miles of Wickliffe anymore. The younger people have left for better jobs and cleaner air, the older ones visit miller-orr or other choices to never return. someday Wickliffe will be another Barlow or Blandville, just another place to travel thru.

It is obvious that you have NOT been in Wickliffe for a long time. The air is STILL pure and sweet to the small. Westvaco is now NewPage, and except for rare occasions when the atmosphere does not permit the particulate matter to be disseminated into the air above, we never smell anything unusual. I drive right by the paper mill several times a day, and I live on a hill over the plant where if it WERE a problem, I would know about it. It is not. 30 years ago, we used to say "it smells like money to me." Nowadays we don't have to use that cover story any more, because it does not smell at all, and the money is still very important to our community. New Page (500+ employees), along with James Marine (already up to 60 employees, and heading for 150) are providing good jobs for our people, and Wickliffe is enjoying an economic recovery unlike anything since Westvaco first came 40 years ago.

So, trot your possum back home to Wickliffe, and see with your own eyes (and nose) that what I am saying is the truth, and what you have posted here is not true.

I agree with mister kelley, nashville, you haven't been around here in a while, yes we are friendly and yes we are small and yes sometimes you can get a wiff of the plant. but guess what? we know who we are and who are neighbors are and we care about are neighbors, are children don't grow up in shopping malls or go to schools that have to have lockdowns all the time, where teachers have to worry about being safe. we live a simple life in wickliffe and treasure every bit of it. When I get up to go to work in the morning, heavy taffic, carjackers,and muggers etc. etc. will not be what's on my mind, I will be wondering where to stop to get my morning coffee and maybe a sandwich for lunch and doing a good job at work and then it's just a hop skip and a jump and I am home again no hassell no stress. WICKLIFFE. what a great little town!!!!!!!

Wickliffe is the best place to live, that's jst my opinion. Even though i'm only a 13 yr. old girl i love wickliffe all my friends and family live here, and I've lived her since i was borned (i was actually born in paducah But ne ways) i have never moved i started pre-school in ballard.
My life is based on staying in wickliffe for quite a while,This is a town with little pple and big hearts;thi town is big enough for ALL of us and if yopu dont like it thats ur own prob all i know is thati love our town!

You wouldn't happen to be the same Larry Kelley who was convicted of some fraud counts relating to some old ladie's credit card when also serving as the top prosecutor in Ballard County (after having to leave as Lee County Attorney even before that), leading to a disbarring and time in the pen., and who now is running some real estate scheme, and who despite FELONY convictions keep laughably trying to tell everyone in Wickliffe he's the poltical boss of Ballard County, would you?

If so, then maybe having an individual like you in charge of the Wickliffe Main Street economic development council is why Wickliffe and Ballard County can't have nice things?

The smell may not be pleasant but it doesn't drape all over the county nor the city of Wickliffe. There are no houses right at the plant so no one really smells it unless you drive by it. So get over yourself and don't run the town's name in the ground if you don't live here and know for sure how things are!

I grew up there too. Yeah, the smell was something else when the atmosphere was right but mostly the smell was contained near the plant. At least that's what I remember. I do remember one time when we had a temperature inversion and it was difficult.
Now, believe it or not, during periods of high pressure in the fall, you can smell the plant in Union City TN.

is lk the owner of these properties...check your lease/rental agreement and post, who owns them.

Personally, Larry is a slumlord... I didn't think that Ballard County has hud... and furthermore there is no section 8 out here except for the public housing apartments so I think inaccurate for the comment about hud. Just saying....

I grew up in Wickliffe, that little town was a paradise to us kids!Ham Stroud was sherriff, Homer Boyd had Boyd,s Drug Store, Mary and John
Titian ( not sure of that spelling ) had a liitle grocery store, ballard dry goods and merchatile were there, Simmons repair shop, Leon Fowler a young postal clerk, next to Hughs Store, Pauline Phillips luncheonette with Cecil the cook making the best gresiest hambergers in town. There are so many places and people coming to mind as I write this. I'll post more later. Don't forget "Apple" Parham @ the Gulf and Mr Ryan @ the Standard. Mrs Haynes 1st grade teacher, Ms Pearl, 2nd grade teacher. George Lanes father was the water meter man I think. Slaughter Pen Hill sleigh riding on those rare snow days.Wickliffe was my formative years, and probably some of the best times of my life. Anybody else remember those years?

You've got to be kidding me. No one smells it? Only on rare days? It stays right around the plant??? Please. It's so nauseating that it makes going outdoors almost unbearable MORE days than not ... and that's across the river in Illinois! And yeah, it's coming from your plant. There are days I start to cross the bridge to do something in Wickliffe and the stench gets so bad I turn around and go home. Not that home is much of an improvement, since the stink permeates my house so much it wakes me out of a sound sleep. I find it hard to believe it's legal to stink up two states. Maybe y'all can't smell it because it's imbedded in your brains.

Ballard County is wonderful.. I have lived here all my life and West Vaco is $$$$.. It provides jobs for our people and community and so what it smells on occasions. If you don't have that to gripe about I'm sure you will find something else. And my goodness whoever wrote the part about Larry kelly.. WOW!! i'm not good friends with the man.. And yea he's had a past but Haven't we all.. NO ONE is perfect and we ALL make mistakes.. This whole website cracks me up.. When You can show us that your life is perfect then you come on here and judge others like that.. If you don't like his rental property then move out!! WOW, your name says it all. As in, WOW are you freaking stupid or something. We are who we are. Larry Kelley is a hate-filled lowlife. Everything he touches turns to garbage, and people are "jealous" of that you say. What happened to all that talk about him and how he was gonna "bring back Ballard County with Asian carp." Anybody with half a brain could figure out that it can't work. He wants Wickliffe people to fish it out of the river for 8 cents a pound. If you catch 1000 lbs. of fish it's only $80.

The idea of exporting Asian carp to China (which I'm not sure Larry Kelley realized is in Asia) is ludicrous. The Asian carp species that could be caught in Wickliffe (the ones that are labelled as an invasive species in this country under something called the Lacey Act) are the cheapest selling in China, which is where he says he can export these things. Think about it: Larry Kelley thinks he can put people to work exporting the cheapest fish in China back to China. The fact that it is so cheap suggests that they think they have too much of it, how else would someone think they ever got over here in the first place to eat pond scum! Larry Kelley keeps running around saying "it's a Chinese delicacy." On this point he is correct, but you know what, so are frog legs. Asian carp is a delicacy because only poor people eat them. I wouldn't recommend catering a wedding with pigs feet but apparently Kelley would with this logic.

Yeah, WOW, people sure are jealous of a guy like that. Maybe people don't like the guy because he's a moron, personally obnoxious, and holding the county back. He's destroyed everything he's ever been associated with. A decent portion of his own family despises him. All of that is the stuff he's been up to now.

And for the past: where does ABUSE OF POWER sit with you. And this guy wants more public offices. He was investigated for corrupting the Ballard County Attorney's office even before the credit card thing. How long did that mayor's race of his last, a week? HA! People need to get a clue before he drags others into his pathetic pit of failure.

If you're gonna be talking about habits, then you need to be taking a look at Larry Kelley. Other than that, I don't live in any of his houses or know anything about that, I haven't lived in Ballard County in years but still follow things there and keep some folks stashed away there. But if your man Larry is so freaking great, here's a sampling of his work:

"*493 OPINION AND ORDER
Larry G. Kelley made a motion for an order permitting him to resign his membership in the Kentucky Bar Association and to surrender his license to practice law in this Commonwealth under terms of disbarment.
Movant acknowledges that on June 2, 1994, he was charged in the Ballard Circuit Court, Criminal Information No. 94-CR-00021, with fraudulent use of a credit card, a felony offense in violation of KRS 434.650(1)(b) and KRS 434.690(1), with fraudulently obtaining a credit card, a felony offense in violation of KRS 434.570, and with unlawfully receiving a credit card, a felony offense in violation of KRS 434.620. The charges basically arise from a scheme to illegally and fraudulently apply for, receive and use credit cards. Larry G. Kelley has acknowledged and admitted his guilt, which is conclusive proof that he engaged in the criminal conduct alleged in the Criminal Information filed by the Office of the Attorney General of Kentucky.
SCR 3.130-8.3(b) and (c) provide that it is professional misconduct for a lawyer to commit a criminal act that reflects adversely on his honesty, trustworthiness or fitness as a lawyer in other respects or to engage in conduct involving dishonesty. Movant acknowledges that his admitted criminal conduct is professional misconduct in violation of SCR 3.130-8.3(b) and (c).
Kelley now seeks to resign his license to practice under terms of disbarment. The Kentucky Bar Association has indicated that the terms of Kelley's motion to resign his license are acceptable.
Movant acknowledges that there is now pending against him an Inquiry Tribunal complaint unrelated to the criminal acts charged in the information filed in the Ballard Circuit Court. The complaint, KBA 4049, alleges that he violated SCR 3.130-5.3(b) and 3.4(f) by using his authority as County Attorney of Ballard County, by and through his nonlawyer assistants, to obtain an advantage for a private client in an action for dissolution of marriage. Movant admits that he failed to ensure that his nonlawyer assistants in the office of the Ballard County Attorney observed professional standards as required by SCR 3.130-5.3(b). Movant further acknowledges that he violated SCR 3.130-3.4(f) by permitting his nonlawyer staff to engage in conduct concerning a criminal case to gain an advantage in a civil case."

I particularly want to note that last part where he was screwing around with people's divorces and things as County Attorney. He's really not a good person.
