Tyson is becoming the scapegoat for an inept City Council controlled by Rob Arkley, including Arkley puppets Jeff Leonard and Virginia Bass. That is why I support Bonnie Neely in the 4th District Supervisor race.

There will be a monumental shift on the City Council after the November elections. Progressive, smart, fiscally sound leadership will take over. Frank Jager will be the only Good Ol' Boy member left on the council, the last of the old-guard Republicans who have run the city into the ground.

Just to be clear - the "Rose" in the comment above is not Rose at http://watchpaul.blogspot.com/ - and I do not share that opinion. Dave Tyson has been the best City Manager Eureka has ever seen, and I have watched the forces that buoy Larry Glass work to drive Tyson from office, despite his seemingly nice comments in the article above. It's a sorry state of affairs, and if you have any doubt of what I am saying you need only read the "Smart" "Progressive" blog called"The Humboldt Herald" http://humboldtherald.wordpress.com/

Anyway, great report Thaddeus. I am sorry to see Dave Tyson go, and I think you will see alot of people resigning their positions in Eureka's city positions, as they have also been watching what has been happening with dread. He is well-liked, and they know the instability that is to come.

Can David Tyson, who is still in his fifties, draw
on his retirement? How much is it? Can he continue to work in government and do what is called double dipping? Isn't this one of the things that California needs to reform.

The old guard is on the way out. We need to be very careful now. I don't think we need any particular group. Just smart people concerned with the progress of the city. I too, am voting
for Bonnie Neeley. The others scare the hell out
of me.

People will be resigning their positions, Rose, because Tyson has driven the city's finances into the ground and there is no money to pay them.

Boy ROSE, you sure have a huge green streak in you for the Arkley's don't you. Why don't you tell all of us just what they have done to you or the citizens of Eureka that causes you to be so mean spirited. Was it the theater, the pool, the boardwalk, the Vance hotel, the professional building, the new buildings on 5th st where old run down empty stores were. Come on, tell us we really need to know where all this vindictiveness comes from. Or is it that you just couldn't stand to see someone succeed and be happy for them and the many benefactors that have benefited from their gifts and developments or is it you are just plain jealous and evil? Tell the truth now ROSE.

For his part, Tyson said he never planned on holding the post longer than a decade, and that he is confident the city, which four generations of his family have called home
excuse me mr. tyson you do not live in the city of eureka. you live on sesame lane outside the city limits. you have lived there for your whole tenure as city manager.

Those of us that live just outside the city limits (Cutten, Ridgewood, Myrtletown, Pine Hill) may not officially be in the city limits, but we are Eurekans nonetheless. Eureka needs to annex us into the city limits so we can have a vote & have the services of the Eureka Police department.

Kudos to David Tyson. He has brought stability to city government after a couple of decades of mismanagement by inept city managers. The current fiscal problems have to do with the state government's out of control spending & the nation's economy.

We should all tremble in fear what might happen next year without Dave & with Larry Glass puppets controlling the council.

Bonnie? Name one good thing she has ever done? Talk about Old guard, It is time for Bonnie to go period. Why are you so sure that Bass is so well connected to arkley? Can you make one factual statement to validate this claim? If Virginia thinks his Ideas are good that does not constitute loyalty or subordination to Arkley! Leonard is a P-r-I-c-k Head I agree, The guy has serious issues in my opinion, but who am I to say anything as he ran for his position and convinced the voters to trust his service to the community.

What is so funny is watching Eureka go into the pits regardless, Virginia is merely moving up the ladder and continuing to try and shape this county into something she has envisioned in her life. I Mean she has gone to every level of school in this county, born and raised here and she has a right as anyone else to act on what she feels is right for her community too.

As for the article at hand, Tyson Sucks as a City Manager, Please name one thing he has done that would justify a Manager of the month for the Business he is running?

NOTHING,

As eureka has continued to merely exist for most of his tenure. I canít name a single thing short of administration that he has doneÖ

Donít let the door hit ya when you leave Tyson.

Now Eureka will return to the revolving door, empty suit, carpet-bagger city manager types the likes of Harvey Rose, John Arnold, and, was his name David Tooley?, who were the most recent predecessors to native Dave Tyson's tenure.

You won't find another "local" person with more integrity and passion, coupled with knowledge, skills, and desire, to replace David.

You comment does not equate with your alias. If you graduated from EHS one would gather you have some capacity for critical thinking.

Many department heads do not live in Eureka proper. Does that mean they have no legitimacy to serve the citizens of Eureka?

Do you know what provincialism is? You fit the word to a "p".

Rose, you are an idiot. There should be ZERO policial partisanship at the city council level. Frank Jager a good 'ol boy? He was a rank and file police officer at EPD, and then the County Coroner. He is not one of the big money people in Eureka, of which there are more than just Arkley. Did I mention what an idiot you are?

David Tyson is class act. He is the best city manager my generation has seen. His shoes will be difficult to fill.

I'm sure most of the many dedicated city employees will miss his leadership, which brought about stability in Eureka's most-important administrative position that it had been lacking, for whatever reasons, for many, many years.

Having known David since I worked with his wife at the former Henderson Center Pharmacy years ago, and having covered the city of Eureka as news director and city editor, at KINS and The Times-Standard, respectively, and having worked with David when I was general manager of Eel River Disposal and attempting to get the Eureka garbage franchise, I can say that it will be a long time before Eureka will find such a dedicated, experienced and professional city manager who was also a local resident, not to mention a graduate of not only Eureka schools, but Humboldt State University.

Congratulations to Mr Tyson I hope you can go and enjoy your retirement or a new adventure. I think you WILL be missed by many in Eureka city limits or not, and I agree with Mr Simmons: your shoes will be hard to fill. It's tough walking around with a target on your back too.

I love how Larry Glass feels that David Tyson has decided to retire at a time inconvenient to Larry Glass.

I'm sure that the Personnel Director will play a large role in facilitating the process. He's stalling in hopes that the next Council will pick someone to his liking.

Humbeau, the City Manager serves at the pleasure of the City Council. The personnel director has nothing to do with the selection, retention, and compensation.

David's tenure was solidified because David demanded a 4 out of 5 Council vote for lack of confidence instead of the nomral 3 plateau.

With David's departure Eureka will be a good place to be from.

If the loss of Mr. Tyson's institutional knowledge will harm Eureka; he wasn't doing his job! Nor does any "public servant" who leaves their desk without adequate procedural references.

Mr. Tyson dutifully fulfilled Nancy Flemming's vision of Eureka; "the big box hub of Humboldt County", while enabling his staff to streamline every zone change and subdivision proposed by his friends at the Rotary, Chamber and Ingomar.

Now, with the city facing financial ruin, a multi-million dollar deficit and a multi-tens-of-millions in deferred waste-water updates, Tyson is abandoning ship.

His job is done.

He successfully played his part in maintaining public subsidies for the old-boy developers who have always run this city and could care less about the damn "gubmit" and its sewer problems.

The Eureka City Council should immediately form a knowledgeable citizen's commission to review the budget, personnel, infrastructure, and other city manager responsibilities, to advise the council. Many cities do not have a city manager. Instead, Eureka needs to re-direct Tyson's salary among the 5 council members so we may begin to attract candidates with the time to actually engage in the business of running the city.

As opposed to electing more developer lap-dogs who blindly support whatever project the deepest pockets demand and hailing it as "growth".

What a failure.

Tyson is smart, knowledgeable and hard-working. He will be hard to replace. Seems like since he was promoted to the City Manager position, though, the revolving door just got moved to everybody under his command. How many "early retirement" and other shifts have we seen in the department heads under him? Seems like a blur of smiley, silent, stressed out looking people on parade over there. It doesn't seem like he's created a great culture for employees to do their best work in. But I guess everybody has strengths and weaknesses. And it really looks like a tough job. Thanks for the tireless service, Dave. Congratulations and best wishes.

Gee, did you get turned down for membership in Rotary, Chamber, and Ingomar. At least the people in those organizations have businesses that employ people and contribute to the community. Are you a public trougher or just another of our obstructionist/extortionist members of CREG,EPIC,NEC, and BAYKEEPER.
