On a recent trip to Whittier, I left my purse behind. Didn't discover this until later that day, in Anchorage. After ruling out the gift shop and the restaurant, I fearfully recalled last seeing it on the bench facing the parking lot outside the general store. It contained 500 bucks, all my credit cards, identification, checkbooks. In other words, my entire life (or at least the part allowing this vacation). I called the Whittier police and connected with John Havard. He kept me on my cellphone while he checked the bench and then inside the store. Found purse! Then he made arrangements to meet me to return the purse -- we missed the tunnel schedule, so he came out to get us on our way. And not a single thing was missing from the purse -- despite the fact that the parking lot had been filled with people when I left it behind. I ADORE WHITTIER -- what a wonderful place. And John Havard -- you're still my hero.
