Why is everyone always picking on our American heros? These people go to battle everyday for us, never knowing if they will return home to their family and loved ones. So a few mistakes were made. It's not like cheating in academia is not becomming more comom place and less than ethical behavior in our elected officials is unheard of. It's not like Baca's decisions haven't been suspect or questioned before. The problem is the man has probably got the goods on every politician and prominant person in the area and thus is allowed to run reamped with his department. This is why term limits should apply to every elected office in the land. There are too many public officials that enter office on a shoe string and leave it quite wealthy.

No one is picking on the "heroes." This is a management issue. Not a deputy issue.

Filming of the reality show simply has to be a distraction. How could anyone contend that it isn't? A camera along with a crew, always causes people to act differently whether in the court room or in the Academy.

This report seems to identify very serious deficiencies in testing. There is no reason to be allowing multiple repeats of failed tests. Where is the supervision of classes and the management and administration which is supposed to control the operation of the Academy? It's operation is a huge investement. The need to close the Academy, and the seriousness of the allegations in the report mean that once again, the people, the taxpayers, are not getting what they have paid for. Unfortunately, the report also seems to indicate that new Deputies and Officers are being put on the street who are not truly qualified to do the job. That is an even more serious concern.

No kidding. I always thought if you did not pass a test you were allowed one retest per POST. Fail the second one and you were out. Now I hear "rumors" that a recruit can take the test as many times as needed to pass. good grief. the tests were not that hard. am I wrong?

EVERY Academy does it to one extent or another. If an instructor counts an imperfect pullup (and they ALL do; pullups are to be done from a dead hang, with torso and legs straight at ALL TIMES- WITHOUT the legs bending as to assist the upper body)and renders the recruit a pass on that excercise, then the instructor has assisted that recruit WRONGFULLY according to Calif state POST physical abilities standards.
Not one public safety academy is innocent of "lending a helping hand" to their recruits. Not Orange County Sheriff, not Rio Hondo, not LAPD,not Santa Ana College Fire..etc.

I recently served as a proctor for the written exam for the CHP. Some of these bozos could barely speak English. Others looked as if they hadn't exercised in months. But, as noted above, the politicians want to get more cops hired so apparently any Tom, Dick and Harry off the street now thinks he has a chance to be a cop.

Soooooooo true. I have seen it as well. At LBPD,cant hit the center of the target, lets put a big chalk mark on it so you can now see what you're shooting at.Those that can,"do",those that cant "do" promote and become upper management just look at who's running the LBPD and it's acadamey. How much street time do any of these command officers have?

The problem is the politicians meddling in police work. They want more and more cops out on the street and as a result of the accelerated process, people are being appointed who simply have no business in law enforcement. Gang members and people with criminal history are slipping through as a result of inadequate background investigations. This is not new. It's been happening for the last 30 years and gets progressively worse.
I remember when I went through the LBPD Academy. you were allowed to fail one exam, either physical or academic. Only one. If you failed a second time, out you went. Simple. I knew things were starting to reek when I saw a Lieutenant change the score of a female recruit who is now a commander. She couldn't do a single pull-up. So what does the LT. do? He writes down "10."
Pathetic.

Yet another screw up by Sheriff Baca. The Sheriff to Hollywood Stars is trying to make one of his own agency. The star worn on your shirt doesn't make you one, and at this rate you'll have some falling stars Big Baca.

If you have ever been to County and seen the officers there that are being readied for Patrol, it would scare you immenselly. They are like a bunch of Jr. High School Thugs.
No wonder there are so many Police shootings that never should have Happened

This is directly from the Sheriff's Dept.

FYI, many of the news reports that broke today are very inaccurate. There are already retractions and back-pedaling by some of the entities that claimed that the whole academy was shut down, or that we are due to lose certification. What actually happened is that POST inspected aspects of our Basic Course, which they do periodically as a matter of regular course, and found some deficiencies (also not unheard of—just like we can always find ”deficiencies” in some area or other at almost any station.)

We were not prompt in addressing some of the deficiencies, and POST reacted with uncharacteristic vigor and lack of confidence in our responsiveness. So, as usual, that got our attention and we have been working hard to fix the things ever since the Division level executives learned about the problem.

One of the concerns had to do with our not following all the POST standards about how many re-tests a recruit may get after a failure(s). We have apparently been giving more than the maximum allowable number of re-tests in areas such as EVOC, Range, etc.
As a result of our redoubled efforts to correct procedures and protocols, we decided to delay by one month the start date of the class that was scheduled to begin this week. The other two classes already in progress are still underway.

As you can see, the actual facts are not as juicy or “fun” as they would have to be to make an eye-catching story, so this one apparently got “dressed up” by some of the media outlets.
