I don't believe it's the water or the school. However, I don't believe it has anything to do with childhood obesity. A lot of the kids that are having the surgery are average (or smaller) active kids.

I AM NOT BACKING DOWN ON THIS ONE. IT IS NOT THE FACT THAT I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH WHITMIRE. IT IS THE FACT THAT ANYONE WITH COMMON SENCE WOULD WANT TO FIND THE CAUSE OF THE ILLNESS IN THE COMMUNITY WHETHER IT IS THE WATER OR SOME OTHER ENVIROMENTAL FACTOR. KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN ON THIS ONE IN THE LOCAL NEWS AS ALL HELL IS ABOUT TO BREAK LOOSE ON THIS ONE..HOPEFULLY THE REPONSIBLE PARTIES WILL BE MADE TO DO THE RIGHT THING AND THEN LET'S SEE IF MR. FAT BABY SITS BACK AND TELLS ME TO GET OUT OF TOWN!!!!!!!!!!

I have developed what seems to be Crohn's Disease and have had numerous problems over the last few years! It started when I was living in whitmire before I moved! I lived in Whitmire for most of my life and I am 33 years old now. My dad, Stepmother, and brother have had their gall bladders removed. My dad is super active, never sits around. But he has battled cancer, and the gall bladder problems. There is SOMETHING WRONG IN WHITMIRE FOR SURE! THEY ARE TRYING TO COVER THIS UP! The news stations should look into this more and help out the people of this small town!

My mother who still lives in Whitmire just told me she got a notice on her front door that there were some toxins found in the water and not to drink it. It looks as if this is the start of the cover up. Maria, do you have that phone number of that lawyer? I have had serious health problems for the past 2 years and we have lost everything because of it!

What do you expect DHEC to do,they're just a big bloated state agency full of a bunch of bureaucrats. They wouldn't tell the citizens what was wrong even if they had the collective ability to figure it out,so,what's they're answer? It must be nothing.

To former Whitmire resident in Simpsonville. Please call me my number is in the Whitmire listings Maria McMurtury or have your mom call me this forum will not accept phone numbers on it. What gets me with the water notice is the problem has been there for a year and we are just now having the notice given to all the people when their water meter is being read. People in apartments don't get one except to the apartment office. The halocedic acid in the water is a by product of the clorination process and supposidly the town and dhec have been working on this since last September. My question is WHAT THE HELL IS IN THE WATER THAT THEY CAN'T GET IT STRAIGHT FOR A YEAR!!I am trying to get a water filter company to help out but with filters but i don't know how much good it will do. every time we turn on the faucet we don't know what's comming out and who knows what else may be wrong with all the old landfills around here..........

YOU'VE STARTED SOMETHING NOW THAT YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE TO FINISH>THE HEAT IS COMING ON SOON!!

To Jessie: I am Maria's sister. My response to you is that your post sounds very much like some sort of threat. My advice to you would be to be very careful about what you say & do. If you or anybody else has a problem with my sister's concerns & actions, you should all be bright about it. Oppose her opinion by writing letters to the paper, or whatever outlet you'd like to use. However, don't ever threaten her or anybody. My sister has been outspoken because nobody else was willing to do so. Her concern is for the whole town of Whitmire, especially the children. It amazes me that people don't want to know what is making their children sick. Educate yourself a little bit. You can't always believe what "the powers that be" tell you. Don't just sit on your butts while you & your children are getting sick. Gallbladder problems may be the tip of the iceberg. Nobody knows what kind of health problems are going to surface in the years to come. I may live many miles away, but I stand behind my sister 100%. So until you can prove that there was no wrongdoing on the part of any of the officials, companies, etc., perhaps you should keep your ignorant, threatening remarks to yourself. If you think that my sister is wrong in her belief that the people of Whitmire are being harmed & the people behind it aren't taking responsibility for it, then prove her wrong. If you can't, then leave her alone.

Come on Jessie. You can do better than just throwing around insults like a child in the schoolyard. There is no need for you to respond to me tomorrow, or at any other time. I will not respond to anything else that you choose to post. You have shown that you can't respond without including childish nonsense. Have enough intelligence & class to oppose her views, without your ridiculous insults.
As I told you yestereday, IF you can prove my sister is wrong, then do so. You claim taht you can prove she's wrong. IF you know what is causing all of the illnesses in Whitmire, you should be sharing that with everyone. I hope you have a plausible explanation for the illnesses. If you do, and it can be proven that whatever your theory is, is correct, then great. But if you don't have an accurate, honest, plausible explanation, then you should just leave it alone. My sister is concerned with the illnesses with which the residents of Whitmire, especially the children, are suffering. She wants to know what is causing it & wants accountability from whoever is responsible for the health problems. For the sake of all the residents of Whitmire, including my own family & yours (if you live there), I hope that somebody finds the causes & a solution.

To Jesse and anyone else who seems to have a problem with Maria- this is very simple. If you have a problem with Maria then you must either not be worried about potential health problems in your home, or you don't believe this is the case. Either way- if you don't care or believe this is potentially the case, you seem to have an awful lot of time to cause her grief. Her intentions are to do nothing more than keep her family and YOURS safe and healthy! Why is that such a problem for you? If you don't think there is a problem then stop waisting your time keeping track of the issue. Live your own life and leave hers alone! Or- if you feel that you need to oppose her so bad- that's fine. After all, we do have the same right to free speech don't we? Then oppose her- like an ADULT. Write letters, whatever. But don't make useless comments or threats.
For everyone else- I hope that all questions are answered and all help that is needed is recieved. I do support you and if I didn't- I wouldn't be spending my time watching.

(By the way... has anyone else noticed the words under the comments box that says "Be Polite"???)

You are right about being polite and she need's to stop using vulgar word's in her comment's.It's not up to me to save the town when she has all the answer's and know's all the people to contact.I know the Mayor would love to know what Maria know's about water operation's.

I can agree with that point... if we are going to expect to be responded to with respect we should all write as such. But Maria is not saying that she knows anything. Just that she Wants to know what is going on. She is not trying to save the town like some kind of hero- she is merely a concerned citizen trying to find answers. Therefore why should she have to put up with such responses from people like being "tarred and feathered" or her husband told to tell her such things?
Furthermore, and I will be the first to say that I am just as guilty as the next, but let's not forget what this posting area is supposed to be for- it is for the subject of the news article. Not for opinons about other people and what they are trying to do.
So I say again, I am here to keep up on any new developments as I too am concerned about the issues at hand. And if it does over time turn out to not be what Maria thinks, let's not forget along with many others,... so what? Let's find out SOMETHING. Because something is not right. If you are not concerned or don't believe something is wrong, that's fine! Just don't concern yourself with the issue anymore. There is no reason to act this way. It is a simple choice. Either be concerned with the subject at hand, or don't.

I know nothing about water operations. My original post was asking for anyone with any ideas about what might be a probable cause for an unusually high number of gallbladder surgeries among our young children. My son had to have his taken out last October at the age of 12. There have been 40 plus more children in this community of approximately 500 children that allso have had the surgery in the past 4 years. The epidemiology department at DHEC says no other community has reported such numbers in children. A DHEC rep said to me at a meeting just think your town will be famous for this. My reply was this situation is not something you want to be famous for.In my quest to find out real answers by reaching out to the public it seems some people have taken this personal. I do not have a vendeta against the town or the water. Any information I have found out is all through public record through the freedom of information act. I ask that all of you who are truely concerned for our children that you will pray for us that we find a cause whether it is one or 10 things that is causing the interuption in the biliary process of the function of the gallbladder. Thank you for reading my post and have a blessed day.
