Used to go to the Spot and play pool. Had alot of fun there. Still love the dairy bar...
..if i can be presumtive enough to ask..what years did u play pool? i'd guess in the mid seventies. |

And don't fergit the King Edward Restaurant! There also was a movie theater at Pine Knot, a pool hall, a fella by the nickname of Monk had it last. The Dipsy Doodle at Pine Knot, then on out on east hwy 92 there was another one ran by a Meadows fella, tho the name slips my mind. Hear tell there even was a drive-in theater at the north end of Strunk at one time. Ever go to the Cappachine Restaurant at Strunk? It burnt down sometime in the mid to late 60's. The few motel rooms are still there across from Duncan's store.
Down near the Ky. Tn. stateline on Ky.'s side there was The Shell Grove. It closed in the late 60's too. |

had many a meal at the king edward. worked for a very short time at the pine knot theater. i think it was melvelo king that owned the dipsy doodle in pine knot..and drank many a shake atmeadows place..he had a couple good lookin daughters..so the food didnt have to be to good!..lol i dont remember the drive-in theater in strunk..altho i have heard talk of it. i know where the old motel in pine knot was. as for the shell grove..i can vaguely remember going with family once to eat there. i am trying to think of the restaurant(country kitchen?) at the south end of whitley..just a couple of doors from norbert cooks old grocery store. as for the cappachine restaurant...never even heard of it. Old Timer..did you go to school in mc
creary co.? if so pine knot, whitley city, or maybe even stearns. i grew up around whitley and attended the old mccreary high. |

No Con Man I believe it was the late 70's early 80's. I used to work for melton at burger hut, I think he still owned it at that time not sure. |
.......... I must be getting old! anyway..i was not in the county in the late 70's and 80's..just passing through to visit once in a while. did brent middleton work there for a bit? or am i a confused man instead of a con man...lol i never did play pool but did play the pin ball machines a few times. i also played the pin ball machines at the taxi stand across from the dairy bar. there wasnt many girls playing the machines when i was a teen..guess they might have jiggled too much if they shook the machine..lol..now i dated several young ladies that would play pool if we went to somerset and played at the bowling alley or down at the poolhall in tradewind center. |
I am not sure who worked there at that time I know Hasel worked for Melton there. And I guess i am old if i remember all this stuff. I remember those pinball machines. Shake them enough and your score would go up....lol i dont remember the taxi stand across from it, my time it was burger hut a really small place until he moved it up the road.... I played pool once at the bowling alley in somerset but that was years ago tooo. I better stop or I will tell my age....lol I moved to McCreary county in 74 so i guess you can go from there...lol Have a good one con man. |
..........nice to reminisce a bit..good night..guess i cant ask a lady her age..so ill just say..74 was a good year...lol |
LOL that would be wise just say i age very will have a good night con man

I remember more about things when I sleep. There was a ice-cream shop between Anderson's Market at pine knot and the Missionary church too. Another small hamburger/icecream place at "Mud-Cut" near the old coal washer where you could buy a pickup load of coal. The Red Ace at the state line always had the cheapest gas fer a quarter a gallon, and if they had a gas war with Joe Gordon's across the road, it'd be fifteen cents of there abouts. Was a wood framed Restaurant at Strunk next door to Dick & Tootsies store now but the building is gone. Had a gal that worked there all us guys was in "Lust" with, we thought it was Love tho. Kelsey Hamby ran a barber shop there and maybe sold a little used furniture until he retired. And the Meadows restaurant was called Hobe's Drive-in. McCreary hs and Pine Knot hs were mortal enemies, strange that they all are desegregated now. But that's progress I guess. I still wonder about a student I met that played basketball and baseball for Pine knot that made good, he's a pediatric physician at Louisville Ky. now. I believe his name was Lonnie King, married a local girl-Mona Brock & his mother was a teacher, but the name other than Mrs. King leaves me at present. Gotta get off memory lane.

i do remember the barber shop! hambys son i think taught school in the county system for a few years. your right about hobes restaurant too...as for the other things u mentioned..mst have been before my time..loli do remember when pine knot and mccreary were rivals.
allot of that was before my time in McCresry county. But i do remember Pine Knot and McCreary being rivals. I used to live down in what some called Sawyerville. Nice quit place. Alot of people still hate that place. It was way back in the hills......LOL. But no one ever bothered you. I just wish The area would get more jobs so you could work. I moved to Corbin so I would be closer to my job. Which at the time I had 2 jobs.
sawyerville...miss E you were a way out! as i am sure u know the fed. govt. owns about 75% of the land so there is little room to grow. for some reason the people that lived near u had a tendency to go to corbin rather than somerset. not sure why. when i was little i lived in stearns but all my teen years were spent in whitley. when we were teens we done a lot of drag raceing..we used a portion of north 27..a three lane section just north of the sandhill road /27 intersection. we were pretty careful in watching for other cars. we always raced on the south bound lanes. wonder if the kids do that any more.
Yeah I heard about those drag racers but never did go watch them....lol And your right with the gov owning most of McCreary county there isnt much room for growth. I moved to Corbin because I was full time here in KNox countys EMS. I was part time at McCreary Co. So I went where most of my time was spent after my big D. I like Corbin people here arent as friendly as McCreary so I mostly keep to myself. Miss the good old days in McCreary tho. Kids now day dont know how to have fun anymore....

that rest. that was on 92 was called hobes. it was at the intersection of 92 and meadows grove rd. |
hobe did have a couple nice looking daughters..cant remember their names. wonder what ever came of them..seems like one of them married a stephens from whitley |
i tend to agree with you on the friendlyness of mccreary vs whitley co. people. I had a job for a while that took me to whitley co. the people i worked with were nice..i worked mainly with some of the local politicians..at least they thought they were politicians...lol have to admit they were always good to me..but over all they can be a bit clickish. keep talking about your jobs etc and we might figure out who u are..so better be careful waht u say..along with name goes age!...lol |
