While i applaud Collins for defending a pit bull and pointing out the bad rap it receives I find a huge fault in his more bite strength than an alligator comment.

Anyone who knows anything about biology and science can pretty much knock that one out of the park.

Mr. Collins is not to blame and dont take this oppertunity to jump on the I hate Chris Collins bandwagon
He was going by a report and I saw the same feature on animal planet where the man was using a bite streanth meter and the pit bull did indeed have a stronger bite than the alligater that was tested.
It's not a science and their both going to hurt.

I seem to remember starting my statement with "I applaud Collins" meaning I think what he is doing is great just uninformed. And for your information it is a science there is no proof or has there ever been conclusive proof to make the statement that a pit bull can bite harder than an alligator. I think it is just misinformation and i'm tired of it being printed in newspapers. I don't fault Collins for it as much as I do the paper.

Care to show the proof of that? Considering there have never been any exact measurements of a dog's bite strength. Then you have to factor in the pounds per square inch and that a alligator obviously has a larger jaw than a pitbull so the overall strength is higher if looking at that as "truth"

"Pit Bulls have a 1800 PSI Jaw Pressure. Wrong again. Working with author Karen Delise (Fatal Dog Attacks) we have researched the references used for this data and have found there is no factual research to support this claim. This myth stems from an article published in the 1989 The Journal of Trauma "Mauling by Pit bull Terriers: A Case Report" by Bret R. Baack, M.D., John O. Kucan, M.D., Gerland Demarest, M.D and E. Clyde Smoot, M.D. On Page 519 it states: "Pit Bulls bite with greater force than most dogs (up to 1,800lb/in2)(4).

Reference (4) cited for this fact is: "Dog bites in children: Epidemiology, microbiology, and penicillin prophylactic Therapy but Douglas A. Boenning, M.D., Gary R. Fleisher, M.D., and Joesph M. Campos, PhD.

However, neither the topic of bite pressure nor pit bulls is addressed or even mentioned throughout the entire article.

This case report is promoted by many people as fact, yet it's not substantiated anywhere.

On the other hand, here is scientific evidence proving this myth is an urban legend:

Dr. Brady Barr of National Geographic (Dangerous Encounters: Bite Force, 8pm est 8/18/2005)– Dr. Barr measured bite forces of many different creatures. Domestic dogs were included in the test.

Here are the results of all of the animals tested:

Humans: 120 pounds of bite pressure

Domestic dogs: 320 LBS of pressure on avg. A German Shepard, American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) and Rottweiler were tested using a bite sleeve equipped with a specialized computer instrument. The APBT had the least amount of pressure of the 3 dogs tested.

Wild dogs: 310 lbs

Lions: 600 lbs

White sharks: 600 lbs

Hyenas: 1000 lbs

Snapping turtles: 1000 lbs

Crocodiles: 2500 lbs"

To clarify that, obviously even my arguement is flawed because a dog cannot truly be told to bite down on something as hard as possible so the tests will be skewed. All I'm trying to show is there is NO conclusive evidence to show the myth of pit bull bite strength as truth. If I can pull a toy out of my bullies mouth with just on arm and a strong tug then I must be one strong dude if he can clamp down that hard.

This just shows why there are leash laws! After reading this, I am really stunned and extremely glad my neighbor has his Heyna and that damn snapping turtle fenced in. If those two were to get out together, they could cause some major chaos in my neighborhood! I think I could outrun the Hyena, but not the snapping turtle. Ouch!

As with any dog...it is all in how they have been raised! I have seen some pretty nasty poodles in my time, but they dont get the BS rap that Pit's, German Shepards, Rotties, and Dobermans do! Raise a dog in your home (ANY DOG) with love, and respect for all members of the family and other human beings...you get a well adjusted dog! PERIOD. They are domesticated animals that live to PLEASE their owners, its unconditional!!! If you are a piece of S*** dog owner then guess what you get? It straight up pisses me off for someone to get a dog and treat it like crap and keep it tied up in the farthest corner of their back yard then wonder why the poor soul behaves like a crack fiend needing a fix when it is off the leash! IT HAS NO INTERACTIONS WITH PEOPLE!!! Treat your dog well, socialize it with children, be the BOSS!!! And watch some Dog Whisperer!! Caesar is a genius!

You are right on. I read in the Johnson City Press that they were considering fining folks that tied up their dogs...didn't happen, but it sure is a great thought. Any dog can be aggressive, some more so than others. I am in no way defending Pits, yes, they do get a bad rap, however, 2 of my dogs have been attacked by ones that were running loose ( mine were on a leash). They literally hung on my large dog's neck. It's not pretty.
Still, dogs are social animals, they need socialization w/other dogs and w/people. If you can't train your dog, socialize it and spend time with it, don't get a dog!!

Sometimes I wish dogs could have a day where they could just stand up, jerk their collars, leashes, and chains off and slap the s**t out of their crappy owners! Could you imagine???? The sounds of ignorant dog owners around the world being bi*ch slapped by their dogs instead of the dogs being on the receiving end! Grab up a lawn chair and a cooler!! I'd pay to see it!! Even better would be if after the smack down...the dogs drug their negligent owners to the farthest back corner of the yard and tied them on a chain and left them!
OK...I realize I am taking it to a possibly unhealthy place...but the bi*ch slapping part would be SUPER funny! I am quite sure that one of my three would be able to think of something to slap me for as well - slow with the dinner, bought the wrong snacks, gave a bath when they just found the best dirt spot to roll in...I would take it...no one is perfect!

here's the thing--dogs aren't human, they are dogs--i get so sick of people talking about their dogs like they have souls or something.

i know i'm going to get hateful comments about this, but enough is enough--i wish people cared about abused kids, or underpriveledged people, or people who aren't treated right like they care about dogs that can't carry on a conversation.

just using my freedom of speech and right to my opinion.

Well then perhaps there should be a whole week devoted to children so that they can all stand up and bi*ch slap their crappy parents! And while we are at it, there should be a month or so devoted to underprivileged people to stand up and bi*ch slap their government officials in addition to their parents for letting things get so out of hand!

I'll keep my chair and cooler in place for those days as well!

My dogs give me something that is guaranteed every day...unconditional love...and they don't have to say a word. It's a simple, beautiful thing!

"Lizard Killer"...that's a nice name...compassionate to a fault I bet...

Just using MY freedom of speech and opinion

I hate it when people mistake caring about animals as not caring about humans. My brain has the ability to show compassion for several different things at once....strange how that works. Just because we believe dogs shouldn't be treated like crap doesn't mean we don't think the same of humans.

I respect your freedom of speech and your opinion, but it is stupid. Thats my opinion.

Thanks Adam...exactly my point!I don't think that any living, breathing thing should ever be treated like crap! Speaking of which...has anyone heard about the "big game" hunting outfit that someone is trying to open up in Grainger County? Large game animals kept in a large amount of enclosed acreage so that a**holes can pay a price and hunt them down and kill them.
Heard it on a local radio station...I will have to locate the info and post separately, to me, that is a very different situation than the whole pit-bulls getting a bad rap thing. Equally crappy but very much different.

I've heard about it. Apparently they are trying to work on a ban of such a place...don't know if they will be able to or not, but lets hope.

Daily Horoscope for May 25

Aries

Your emotions have the upper hand, making you rather fiery and fervent. That's great if you're hoping for a passionate encounter with you-know-who, because you'll be really hot stuff. However, in non-sexual situations you could become somewhat tempestuous and irritable, especially if you suspect that things aren't going the way you want.
