It is sad and disgusting to see adults minimizing a great opportunity for the area's youth because they blame the president for the woes of the coal industry. I can only hope that our children, who got this invitation based on their talent, are not reading this filth and are not being ridiculed by parents who are "Friends of Coal" but not friends of youth and opportunity.
Fianlly, someone understands what I've been trying to say! Thank you.

Because no one family has enough money to do that. It's a great opportunity for this area. I guess the people trying to raise the money thought that people would be less close-minded and more supportive. People are being very disrespectful and just plain rude.

No one's making people donate. I'm sure there are people in the community outside of parents who are proud of our school and students and are happy to donate.

Yeah, that makes complete sense!

In my 41 years in Letcher county, I have never seen the coal industry in such bad shape, bet yet some still think the coal companies and coal miners should help pay to celebrate obama being elected again.

i think its a shame that the majority of letcher co. thinks this a wonderful idea to send our students to washington dc for a president that has pretty much shut this co. and many more in eastern ky down with his war on coal and futher more these people who you are begging for money is the same people that has lost their jobs because of obama shame on letcher co school system and all you supporters and futher more there is no way that each band member should need 4 people to travel to dc with them and if they want 4 people to travel with them let those people pay their own way and not empose their wants on us poor unempolyed and soon to be unempolyed coal miners and their families .

My god you people are brainwashed. There is no war on coal, Obama (who I am not a fan of for the record) has done NOTHING to hurt coal. It's more of the mild winters and people using CHEAPER, MORE EFFICIENT, SAFER ,AND BETTER forms of energy. I know those coal mines are kind of like a cave, but stop acting like cave men and move into this century and learn to think for your self.

Actually, I don't draw a check. And please, don't try to call other people stupid when the spelling and grammar in your post is awful.
All I'm saying is that maybe things were set in motion before Obama got in office. Excuse me for trying to be open-minded.

Oh, and for the record, the students aren't allowed to take 4 people with them. That was made up by some idiot trying to upset people further.

Please take my advice and have some bleach with your koolaid. There's people with bigger problems than you not having a job because you didn't want to go to college and better yourself. You know what? Stay on your knees and suck the economy's dick for your bad life decisions. Be happy that we actually get recognized for something positive than for sucking gasoline out of a cops car, or for being named the top drug town on earth, Peace .

I agree it is an honor for the band students in this area to get chosen to represent our county, but I also think with the economy here being the way it is and many things that we are in great need of keeping such as the senior citizens centers, fire departments, and others that have kept going due to coal severance money. Wouldn't that $70,000 dollars be spent better to keep our community afloat?

You know, I used to support coal, but now, I wouldn't even consider thinking about it. You know why? Because of the ignorance in this county and surrounding counties. It's not my fault you didn't want to go to pursue another education and chose to crawl in a hole everyday. You think you're struggling? With your 6 digit paychecks you've been getting over the years and the nice cars you drive? I've been struggling with a 4 year college education. Making standard pay. I've had to sacrifice so much just to make it. This isn't a matter of the upkeep of an area's life line, this is about you not having enough money to support your life-style. Stop being selfish and let these kids have fun and do something that comes maybe once in a lifetime. Oh yeah, I can assure you if these miners that were laid off would spend some of their saved money to maybe pursue another career or sustain their basic needs, we'd be alright, but no, you won't. You had a feeling you were gonna get laid off but you just had to buy a brand new truck, or house. Solar power out powers every energy source in action so just stop whining. Coal DOES NOT keep the lights on. PRO-SOLAR.

Maybe if you would get an education, you wouldn't fucking complain about it, stop dropping out and depending upon one single job, coal is non renewable, it's going to deplenish. It is rapidly depleting as is. Lots of people get fired, you are just mad because you aren't educated enough to get another job. Obama was the best choice of the previous presidential candidates, and you are all so blinded because you are one topic voters. Coal coal coal. Coal is not our future. Wind and solar power is our future. Your all racist, illiterate imbasils who have no knowledge off economics and no sense of what is best for this nation!

There IS NO war on coal. Well not by obama. You see all those EQT trucks running around? It is them, Chesapeake, Columbia and other gas companies that have put an end to coal industry. Do you have any clue how much gas the Marcellus formation in WV and PA is producing?
I remember being a kid 30 year ago, and everyone saying that coal would be dead in 20 or 30 years. Hey, guess what, they were right. All the easy coal is gone, there are cheaper alternatives to what is left. Blame your state and county officials for WASTING all that coal severance money all these years. When you go to Lexington and drive on their new interstates - that's the money we SHOULD have had to build and attract new industry and education here, instead of corrupt officials wasting contract money on their friends and family and providing no new infrastructure here.
Coal is absolute NOT dead - Wyoming, west Kentucky and Illinois basin coal is booming.
Obama isn't great, but he sure didn't cause this crisis that has been looming for 30 years.
