Does anyone else have an awfully bad taste in their mouth from this whole thing. First of all...it's not about the kids it's all for show. Lets go "support" a president who is putting the majority of us in the poor house. A president that not only lost miserably in Letcher county but lost the whole state....come on! It's awful that the kids have been put in the middle of this, but parents should stand up for the beliefs that made them vote against this prez in nov. If it is about $900 per student and they need approx $70,000 to go...how does that add up....exactly how many students are there going to be going?

Or, when u do go, put on your support coal t-shirts and miner headlamps and march in silence...in support of all the miners out of work, and the families that are struggling, and for your own county. a county that is struggling in all areas because of the crippled coal industry which we all owe a huge thanks to this prez for his implementation and initiation of new guidelines.

I challenge you all to stand up for your beliefs...buck the system...don't be made fools of....SUPPORT COAL and march in silence!!!

Why don't the miners just learn a new trade and quit bitching? Get over yourselves. People lose jobs all the time. It ain't all about you.

Can't believe a mother actually posted on a talk show Facebook page asking for money and considers it something to "thank the Obama administration" for? I can see how this could be considered an honor and should be if the circumstances were different. I know our band is good but I think this invitation is merely a way for this administration to attempt to make amends with Eastern Kentucky.

I think this is an exciting opportunity and honor for the band students however I am having a hard time justifying the cost of $900 per student for this trip. I haven't seen any cost breakdown to explain how this trip will cost $80,000. How did it come to this total?

There are not 80 band members. I realize they need chaperones but seriously what is the parent /student ratio gonna be. I am just going to quit complaining though cause I am not giving a penny.

i completely agree...i heard that each member was allowed to bring up to 4 people with them, which is fine, but it is an embarassment to beg for money at intersections in town on the same day that more than 500 more miners lost their jobs..especially if this money isnt going to the kids ONLY

looks like the letcher school system is going to spend about 78000 dollars to send our children to honoe mr hussein obama. a president whom has sworn to bakrupt the coal industry which is our only industry we have. the school system along with the band instructors are eating it up because they are all applehead obama supporters anyway, while the unemployed people are putting the bill, that is what i call shitting in your own bed

That's such a great idea!!! Why didnt they think of that lol?!?! It doesn't matter of you learn a new trade or not!! The fact of the matter is,it's like a domino effect!! When vial mining suffers so do they grocery stores, has stations and everything else. Just takes a little common sense to figure this out!! Use your head you idiot!!

Just because we live in Letcher County, doesn't mean we're all "Friends of Coal".

It is sad and disgusting to see adults minimizing a great opportunity for the area's youth because they blame the president for the woes of the coal industry. I can only hope that our children, who got this invitation based on their talent, are not reading this filth and are not being ridiculed by parents who are "Friends of Coal" but not friends of youth and opportunity.

If its such a great opportunity for the kids then let the parents pay for this instead of the community
