My mother was born and raised in Letcher County right outside Whitesburg. She stayed until she was about 17. She went back to visit several times until the 1960's then she stopped going because most of her family had moved away to Ohio or other states.
My grandpa, great grandpa and great grandma and my mom's two little sisters are buried up past Whitesburg and she has several cousins and aunts and uncles buried at the cemetery across from WalMart.
She went back in 1996 for a visit with my dad and then I went back with her and my dad in 1998 and again in 2003.
I thought the area was very pretty. Much different from where we live now in New England. I loved the hospitality of everyone. Everyone we talked to was very curious about our accents, being that we live in New England. My Mom lost her strong Kentucky accent, but she still has an accent, but funny, she does not speak with a New England accent.
My Mom is always talking about Kentucky. To her, it will always be home!
it is a great place everone downs it over drugs have allways been around the bigest problems these day and its the way alot of people raise there kids 9 times out of 10 the kid and parent have the same problem id say the same stuff goes on where you live but i am glad u and ur mom got to vivit

It wouldn't be Stump would it? A few years back, maybe 10 or so a family by the name of Stump moved on Elk Creek, not too far up in there... maybe a 3/4 mile or so. He was in some kind of mining business. His 1st name is Allen, I think. Hope that helps out.

Hey Sue! Ya stupid ass! If you only come to town once a year to critisize us, maybe you should just stay the heck outta here! Mountaintop mining and strip mmining is a way of life fer us coal people! If not fer mountain top mining there would property that no one would ever be able to see the beauty of our country. They aren't able to skin up the mountains to check on their property and enjoy all the leveled property that is there. With it, there's a good road to drive up there and enjoy the scenery. Obviously, you know nothing about coal mining @ it's best and the people here enjoying this to no end. Now, just like I say to alla the ferigners, If you don't like it, Just go back to yer city life or Apple-head life and hug a tree and try to finish out yer life somewhere else and "LEAVE US ALONE!)

Jo Jo, Allen Stump is the guy that beat all the truckers that hauled coal him for a long time and went to Cherokee Lake and built a million dollar house there with all the money that he beat and broke several truckers like James Collie and Hobert Gentry.

Yea, I heard he beat some men in the deep mines out of money too. That figures move in here and screw people out of money and then they have anything they want. Hell, they had a helicopter sitting in their yard for a long time. He was also a smart ass to my dad, who is in his 60's, and was trying to give him the benefit of the doubt and be nice to him. I wasn't going to say all that but since you opened that can I'll sure say my piece. What goes around comes around, so maybe he'll get his in due time.

I'd like to know if anyone heard of Vanovers from McRoberts, Kentucky. My great grandfather was Elbert Monroe Vanover and his wife was Casian Ritchie. My grandmother was Myra Vanover.
There is a Vanover book, published by Greg Vanover. It covers most of the Vanover family that they would descend from. It is out of publication now, but possibly can be accessed online here: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/b/...
I would like to talk to you concerning Myra Vanover's stepdaughter, whose name I believe was Izetta Powers. Please contact me if you can help me on that.

You opened it, Good luck. Tonight at midnight your true love will realize they love you. Something good will happen to you at 1:00 PM - 4:40 PM tomorrow, it could be anywhere. Tonight at midnight they will remember how much they loved you as well. You will get the shock of your life tomorrow, a good one. If you break the chain you will be cursed with relationship problems for the next 2 years. Karma. If there is someone you once loved (or still do) and can't get them out of your mind, repost this in another city within the next five minutes
