I am a concerned parent of 4 children of whom will have to change schools if this consolidation is passed. I have heard that Cowan and MJP will be a k-5. BBE will close and ARLIE BOGGS WILL not be changed. How can that happen? I am all for EVERY school to stay the same. It is NOT fair that Arlie Boggs doesn't have to change if the rest of the schools affected will have to change....THAT IS DISCRIMINATION!!!! LAWYERS WILL BE CALLED IN TO EXAMINE THIS ISSUE! LEAVE THE SCHOOLS ALONE! DO NOT CHANGE ANY OF THE SCHOOLS! IF YOU WANT TO DO A CONSOLIDATION, DO 1 MIDDLE SCHOOL AT THE OLD WHS. THAT WILL RESOLVE MOST OF THE ISSUES. NO CHILD THAT HAS BEEN BROUGHT UP CHEERING ON THE CARDINALS OR THE BULLDOGS SHOULD HAVE TO CHANGE IN THERE LAST YEARS OF GRADE SCHOOL...It seems like ANNA CRAFT would listen when you have every political leader of the county against this consolidation. She is doing this to become a "top" contender for football and basketball......ANNA, ALL YOU ARE DOING IS CAUSING THE KIDS TO NOT PLAY SPORTS IF THIS HAPPENS OR THEY WILL PLAY FOR AN OUT OF COUNTY SCHOOL!!! I am in favor of change but do it the right way! It is not fair that a yellowjacket would have to give up their 8th grade year of sports and go to another school (if they are not in WMS district). ANNA, you will find that most of the students who participate in sports will NOT participate if they are forced to go to another school! You will destroy the county middle school sports affiliations if you do this. ANNA, your concern should be about academic scores not sports scores. How many schools didn't meet there NCLB goals? My children's school did and I will be forced to send them to a school that didn't?? How is that fair?? SHAME ON YOU ANNA CRAFT AND SAM QUILLEN FOR PUTTING OUR KIDS THROUGH THIS!!!! I can say that I know of around 150 kids that will go to Jenkins, wise, or Knott counties if this goes through, and most of these kids do play sports! It is just my opinion and I have the right to speak my mind. I JUST ASK THAT THE SCHOOL BOARD AND COMMITTEE PLEASE PRAY ABOUT THIS AND THINK IT THROUGH, CAUSE ONCE IT IS DONE, IT CAN NOT BE REVERSED....PLEASE GIVE IT ANOTHER YEAR TO COME UP WITH A BETTER PLAN!! PLEASE LEAVE ALL THE SCHOOL THE SAME!!!

i do not agree with the consolidation. i have a fix. why dont we enforce the laws we already have. make the kids go in there own district. it will fix underpoipulated schools and fix over populated schools and buses. the new system will be the same in bout 2 years they will be going wherever they want because of money and sports, welcome to whitesburg it has always been like this.

they are going to do it no questions ask all they are doing is acting like they care about the parents concerns when in reality they don't give a damn its time for us to tell the school board members that their time is up and ote in members who share the point of view of the communities as a whole not like the current ones do all they are worried about is their own personal gains from the politicians involved, politics shouldn't determine what is right for the children in this county but it does with this school board they even do thier own employess wrong and walk all over them like they are trash it will come back to bite them sooner or later its time to take a stand and not back down call the state board of ecucation tell them your fed up with the way things are done here they need to investigate all the wrong being done in this school system.

All of this could have been avoided if kids where going to the school that is in their district. BBES would have a lot more kids if they where not being taken across the Thornton Gap and allowed to catch a bus from there. They said they were going to stop this a few years ago and still haven't to this day. No wonder the school has low enrollment and no funding. Now to solve the problem they are gonna close it. Instead of putting all that money into that big new high school why couldn't they have invested a little into fixing up some of the smaller schools that really needed it. Did they really need to spend ALL that money up there?

Get involved, complain to Frankfort! Frankfort is only hearing one story and its not the parents.
Complaining in Letcher Co. is not doing any good.
Protesting in Letcher Co. is not doing any good.

Hey, it's gonna get worse! I am hearing that the Jenkins Independent School System is broke and it is on the agenda for them to come to Whitesburg too! Now, smoke that in your pipe! Then we'll have a "SUPER" school system and we'll be winning all the ball games! The academics won't be going be much good but, what the heck? We'll accel in sports to no end....That'll be a good thing.

I am so tired of hearing this crap about closing the schools....these little, out of date, old, nasty and in need of a whole new building schools should be closed....just because your sister or uncle works there doesn't really mean much to the rest of us....Parents this is not about you, this is about your kids...put them first for once...yea you want that school to stay open, not for your kids sake but for yours....people it isn't that far to whitesburg or neon....give me a brake. When your kids go to high school are you going to drive them everyday???? NO, that would be to inconvenient for the parents...they will all ride the bus then...so why not now. what is the difference in now and when they go to LCC? It's the same amount of time on the bus....My child stays on the bus for a little over an hour...always has...that is just where we live....so come on people close these old, little run down schools and lets give our kids the best....Our kids deserve the best...lets not keep these old schools open to please the parents, lets give these kids the very best we can here in our little community!

Did your head explode while you were writing this? I'm going to go ahead and assume this rant is due to the fact that your children play sports and are fairly well liked as players. A lawyer....because of middle school sports....get a life psycho

i am not for this consolidation they say they are concerned about the future of our children there are children of the future in preschool who get their food from the elementary school.its not all about sports its education.why take these small childrn from people they know and put them with complete strangers as i am sure some children don't adjust well to strangers.

I am not for the current consolidation plan. Instead of trying to cause a head ache right now, why not go into the old Whitesburg High School and invest the money there to consolidate all middle schools into one school. That plan would be more accepted by parents than the current plan. By not having any students in the building now, you can redo the building and upgrade to what it needs to be. Then you would not have the need to spend money at every school to accomidate the current consolidation plan. One middle school would save the most money in the long run. That I can support.

Sorry but my head didn't explode! I am just speaking my mind and the last time I checked it was a FREE country and I could speak as I please! The reason all this is happening is because there is a new law that takes effect next school year concerning students with IEP's,(that means disability children for all you uneducated fools) she doesn't have the funds to make sure each school is properly equipped for those children. The funds that were set aside for those changes got used for the new Vocational School. Anna Craft is also in trouble for using the money set aside for the LCC girls softball field on the vocational school. That is the facts....all you people want to talk about it, then come to the board meeting on December 19, and speak your minds. I have been at every board meeting since this started! Come out and show your support then! Put up or shut up! SIMPLY!!!

I've been reading this topic with great interest. If you're interested enough, Maybe I can persuade our bank to finance the entire package through "Freddie Mac" or "Sallie Mae" for the property and renuvations both with little or no collateral at all. Please respond ASAP!

What Letcher County needs is a couple of well run Charter Schools located in different directions, maybe one at Linefork, one at Neon, etc. The whole county system can be bypassed. Once such a school is open, for each student who enrolls, the state money goes to the school instead of the county system. This would set up competition. Schools would be run quite differently. Then, if you liked one school or the other, you could send your child to your choice and your state money would follow there. If too many students started enrolling at the Charter Schools, and the county started losing hundreds of thousands of dollars, then the county system would start changing in a hurry. For example, those Charter Schools would almost certainly not offer football. So if your son wanted to play football, you would stay with LCC. If you and your son didn't make football a priority, but were more into academics, you would choose the Charter School. Charter Schools are usually much more into Art, Music (but not marching band), Literature and Science. One of the problems here now is too many people feel like they have no choice.

Yes they will be, and probably Colson too....Their Athletics (especially football) have been terrible for the past several years and this county needs athletes, not scolars. Schools are known for their sports (not nerd-scholars) We're going to win a High School State Championship no matter what it takes. We're going to recruit the best coaches there is and when combining these two schools, just maybe that will happen. Get behind this and come on out and watch us win!

At the November board meeting it was passed that all kids that were out of district would be allowed to stay at the school they were at if they were enrolled there by nov 28th. Any child that wasn't in school will have to go to the schoolnin their district.
