For Big Mark:

The following are excerpts which saved me time in attempting to say the same:

As in all political battles, what is apparent does not resemble the underlying political mechanics, and all political issues should be taken with a grain of salt. Thus, many attempts by liberals and conservatives to characterize each other, are more akin to a public stage-play based on symbolic idealisms than on the real workings of compromise in government. Compromises and the personal interest of politicians mean that political discourse are tailored to pander expected voters and fit their common prejudice, whereas promises are generally forgotten once the party holds power.

The word liberal, derived from the Latin liber ("free") has several senses. Generally speaking - and with the exception of the phrase liberal arts, where it means "studies that are liberating to the mind" - the liberal is that which departs from the traditional in some way, whereas the conservative is that which holds to it.

Some independent leftists and libertarians who dislike the USA's two leading parties allege that since liberal means being in favor of liberty, both parties are telling the truth when they deny that they are liberals.
*******

Sorry for not getting back sooner, but a few beers and the couch suddenly became all to appealing last eve. As I read my post again, and again… it occurred to me that my reply could be misconstrued as a personal attack on you and/or your opinions. If this is the case, please accept my apology. My thoughts and feelings expressed on these forums are nothing more than the same, my personal opinions.

I believe both liberals and conservatives hold the key to keeping our nation both moralistically and economically strong. I also believe the one cannot survive without the other. It seems that compromise is elusive when both parties want their bite of the apple, but each is too concerned the other will take a bigger bite and less concerned whether the darned thing has any flavor. I also feel the political arena has subjected the term “liberal” to such new and obscure heights of definition, the true meaning has been long since been twisted to a point whereas even liberal thinkers have distanced themselves from the affiliation. Granted, there are extremists in every faction of society. This must be accepted as human beings are an emotional lot each with his/her own agenda. Couple this with the myriad of values each holds in opposing arrays, you have the reason people tend to gravitate toward those with like agendas and secondly (sadly), moral values. However,(once again, just my opinion) simply because a person does not hold with conventional thinking… or maybe “traditional” is a better term, they are too often coined a “liberal”. Bottom line; The word “liberal” has become less of its actual meaning (in the political definition) and for many, nothing more than a mudslinging term. Question: Would the forefathers of this country have been considered liberal or conservative?

As for the DOC issue, it’s becoming a dead end for me as I have attempted (probably too many times) to explain, not just my opinions, but relevant and factual issues concerning the misconceptions many people have… and how some of these misconceptions were/are formed. From your post, I understand you have seen the inner workings of a part of our state penal system. I as well. If you would like to further this discussion, I’m game… but being hunched over this computer takes a toll on this old man, so my replies may not be as punctual as I’d like.

Hey Lights out ,

So that is what you think a liberal is huh . OK . Looks like you copied and paste that info .
I could not add my reply to yours because of the 4000 word deal . You must think Big Mark is very much correct to put such a lengthy response that most probably got bored with by the 80th word .

I was taught different about Liberals , but then that was at USC . University of Southern California .

You also failed to answer the question that was asked and instead preached to us your liberal view .
You are probably a Grand Valley student and come from a Democratic background .

..........

The question to you is what luxuries do the prisoners not have listed by Big Mark ?

Ok BIG MARK, you win...!

I guess Kumquats do not fall far from the tree. You and Punky must be fruits of that particularly sour seed.

I give honesty and the best you can do is revert back to childlike behavior? LOL You are not worth my time, energy nor the exercise I must endure to lower my intelligence to your standards.

Ok nut case! Maybe you would feel differently if you were the one who could not sleep at night since he was released! Walk a mile in my shoes or anyone else's who had been one of his victims back in the 70's. Let him move in your neighborhood, maybe next door and then see if you are not watching his every move. I don't believe for one minute that he won't hurt someone else again.

No, you don't have to. It's your choice, because you have the right, just like any other American. And I have the right to say, He did the crime, he did the time. He has a right to be free!!!!!!1
We're just going to have to agree to disagree, because you will never convince me that he has a right to be free. Mary Scharphorn had a right to be alive, and he took it away in the most brutal and evil way imaginable. I have no respect or sympathy for the man. The mistake here was his initial sentence, which should have been life with no possibility of parole (since we don't have capital punishment in Michigan, unfortunately).

What are you...a friend of his? He doesn't deserve a break. He is a useless dangerous piece of garbage. The justice system screwed up with this one. He should have NEVER gotten out. It wasn't just that he killed a woman...but how he did it. How much hate must have been boiling through his blood to be capable of something so horrendous? You can feel sorry for him all you want. But I simply cannot. I really feel he is going to hurt or kill someone again. Once a sicko...always a sicko!

I'm sure no one wants this guy living next door to them. However, looking at the bigger picture, what is the bigger threat?------ Having him free, or destroying the Constitutional Bill of Rights in order to put him back in prison?

You are so right Kim . The unfortunate thing is the jury and judge awarded the sentence and the laws that were in place at the tine were carried out . This is why he was let out and why the courts are unable to do anything about this .

I agree with Big Mark . I hope all you that are carrying on and are complaining about this, take the time to let our Legislator know how you feel and to make sure the laws in the future will not let the outcome repeat itself .
