Yeah well i guess the law is the law,but still i dont think that law should be in effect. Mos to f crime that happens with teens anyway is within their home or friends home..

20+ comments on this story, and not one on the Muskegon Heights kids doing well on physics day. Just more unabashed racist comments from the usual faceless posters. It's posts like some of the above that make it impossible to have an open, honest dialogue about race in our communities...f'in ponderous...

How long will this be debated? Will I check the news in a few weeks to see that a kid was actully killed this time. It's obvious from the police records this establishment attracts the "drug/violence" crowd. Close is down NOW, to prevent any deaths in the FUTURE.

Time to close this place. The owner is responsible for what takes place in that club. Crime can happen anywhere, but Muskegon which is just getting on its feet doesn't need this kind of attention.
Duh! The shooting happened "outside" of this business. Re-read/re-watch news.

Close the place. It is nothing but trouble, and wasting of our police resources.

I feel like this...Lacey (the owner) can only be responsible for what goes on in his establishment. The security that he provides inside the club is to help prevent and control altercations INSIDE. Once outdoors on the "city's sidewalk" it becomes just as much as the city's responsibility as it is the bar to keep the crowd moving. I have seen Muskegon police directing crowds before why not now? This man shouldn't be penalized for the craziness of those attending his establishement. He is doing the right thing by asking the police to beef up their presence after the club disburse. Funny that the city is mentioning stripping the alchol license as well as the business. And all these comments about thugs and such just needs to quit. All bars have problems and just like someone else mentioned it is happening everywhere! Grand Rapids, Holland, South Haven you name it its there. Sure the clerk is to do his job, but be encouraging to this young man and help him make the environment around him a little safer. He is doing positive things and providing jobs for individuals in Muskegon and Grand Rapids.

The government created the problem by giving the gangstas a liquor license, now the government can fix this problem by revoking the license.
They should have known that any place that attracts young black males will have violence and crime. People can make all the excuses and claims of racism they want, but that doesn't change the facts.
This is making news and is exploited. White establishments are just as bad. Get a grip! And as far as Mr. Jones being a gansta is a stupid comment. Obviously he is a business minded individual that is doing good things despite what has happened outside his establishment. And news to your uninformed intellect, all black males aren't violent or trouble makers. I resent that statement and would never even for one minute think that of any other race. So yes your comment was very prejudice!! Rather you care or not! And PS it does change the facts!

I sure hope Muskegon isn't turning into Grand Rapids. We don't want shootings every night and a murder every couple of weeks on our streets. Amen to the city commission. Lets hope the Spotlight closes its doors for good.

The "club" being discussed is "downtown" Muskegon. Powers that be wants to close it due to violence. Well the same "powers that be" wants a CASINO downtown. ALCOHOL will be served; drugs will be used before or after leaving it's premisies). When, not if, "violence" breaks will these same "powers that be" jump on the bandwagon to close/remove liquor license of said establishment's owners? I think not. Had the club owner chosen another area of this city for his establishment (like the "ghetto") Less close to the "yuppi" and "power-brokers'" hang-outs; you can bet his liquior license nor his club would not be threatened with closure/removal. He cannot be held accountable for "outside " incidents. I, for one, will be waiting for the "outside of" casino incidents.

Muskegon has sunk lower over the years. in Holland, it's the Mexican gang violence.....stop blaming racis
it does makes for some extremely easy to write news coverage though,
the only thing that changes is the name.
just cut/paste and reprint.
he's right. Muskegoan has sunk over the years, and everybody knows it. in Holland, it's the Mexican gang violence. stop blaming the race card and be responsible for yourself & your kids...any kind of Crime is Wrong..Any Kind....quit blaming society & get it done....you can do it! I know this response will get slammed, but, it's the truth in our cities.

I've said it before, it's time to give up our guns. We cannot be responsible with them as a whole. Many individuals can handle the responsibility. Unfortunately others cannot.

I would think in this day and age, people would be judged on their individual merit and contribution. A number of the people commenting sweep an entire race of people together to explain the behavior of a relatively small group. Yes, among males 15-18, there is a higher amount of violent behavior and in certain geographica areas you can break it down by race, gang affiliation, economics, etc. However, to say that this is always the case with blacks, or Hispanics, Asians, etc. is unfair. Political Correctness has nothing to do with shying away from the actual truth which simply is that many young people without vested interest in education, working hard, their communities, the lives of their friends, families and neighbors, are going to find trouble. Maybe its at a club on a Friday night, maybe its at someone's house during the week but it is sad, unfair and wrong to blame it simply on race and to broadbrush an entire section of our community, and nation for that matter, for these types of events.

To the Muskegon City Commission and County Clerk,

This letter is regarding the recent call to close the Spotlight Nightclub in Downtown Muskegon. Last night while watching the news, I was shocked by the injustice of the whole situation. These leaders, including the police chief are placing the blame for criminal activities caused by the residents of their community on a business man and his year old establishment. When I heard this I thought that this can’t be, I have never heard of a business owner being penalized for the actions of his patrons or those that have been refused services from the night club. The Spotlight Nightclub has brought a chance for diversity into an area that needs it just as much as the renovation of the area. He has met with the police on several occasions pleading with them for their assistance with crowd control once he lets out for the night. The chief of police spoke of the many 911 calls placed for different reasons surrounding the night club but how many of these calls were placed by the owner himself or staff so they could ensure safety to all that are in the vicinity. Mr. Jones’ has complained of the crowd after the bar and all that it would take is one patrol car for maybe twenty minutes to a half hour after the night club has closed down. And this is not too much to ask when he is only asking what the police is to be doing anyhow. Neither he nor his staff has any control of the actions of others once they leave his establishment and it is unfair for the city to expect for him to be. He has tried everything in his power to maintain a safe environment for his patrons and staff as well. Other business owners in the area insinuate that the crowd the Spotlight brings is affecting the negatively on their business. But with the economy being so messed up everyone’s business is being affected including the Spotlight. In the last 5-6 months the Spotlight has suffered from the long and horrible winter along with the failing economy, so I don’t understand how the police chief can say there has been no change when I know that the crowd is no where near as large as it has been.
I can’t believe that a man that worked in the prison system for years and has been nothing but a law abiding citizen and business owner can really be persecuted for the actions of people that he has no personal ties to. This is his livelihood and instead of the community leaders taking actions to ensure that this nightclub continues to thrive in an area that sorely needs the kind of vitality it offers. They have come up with a scapegoat to take the sole responsibility for their inability or unwillingness to do their job and protect the residents and business owners from these problematic residents. All that it would take and all that we are asking is for the community leaders to support him not take this man’s dream because of the actions of others.

Sincerely,

Concerned Citizen

White establishments are no where near as bad as these gansta clubs, they generally do not stand for this type of criminal behavior. On the other hand thug type clothing and a violent criminal lifestyle are celebrated at these types of clubs.

I never said all young black males are violent criminals, but many are. The FBI crime statistics prove this. When they congregate at one of these clubs or a rap concert the violent outcome always the same.

There is no end in sight as long as people like yourself are constantly standing by to condone and excuse their actions.

To place all black men and stereotype the places they frequent as gangsta bars is the problem that is at the root of the issue. These people posting these comments have no idea what type of person Mr. Jones is and have no clue as to what type of establishment the Spotlight is. Just because the nightclub is frequented by African Americans, it is automatically dubbed a "gansta bar" Rap music doesn't create the bad people nor did the Spotlight. Muskegon has had a problem before the Spotlight and closing it will not change the fact. People need to be more open minded when it comes to race and the differences in culture. And the police need to do their job and police like they have been asked
