MIke was a close friend of mine. I was saddend to hear of this tragic accident. Mike was the type of guy that everyone should have the priviledge of knowing. He was a very kind man, willing to help anyone out. He never let his handicap of one leg stop him, and he often made jokes to his friends about being a one legged man. I and everyone that know him, will miss him terribly. I can truely say that it was a priviledge to call him my friend. For all of you that are making comments about his bicycle not having reflectors or lights or the car not paying attention or the bus driver lights on, you should be ashamed of yourselves becasue you DONT know the situation. first off the artical said the bus driver flashed the HEAD LIGHTS, not the red or yellow lights. Second off, Mike had many finacial struggles and THAT bicycle was his only transportation. I would like to see how many of you would go to work everyday, riding a bicycle with only ONE leg. I have personally seen him fall off of his bike, and the type of guy that he was, he would make a joke of it and GET RIGHT BACK ON. With all of the terrible things that happen in this world, the greatest travisty is to loose someone as compasionate, determined and people loving as my friend Mike. All Im asking is this, please know the facts before you post a comment on the site without truely understanding the situation. This world lost a truely great one today.
...mark,I'm very sorry for your loss.he sounded like a very special guy.and you are right,NOT too many people would ride a bike to work and back.

Jerk! do you not have a heart? is he supposed to ride his bike in the weeds? common people are hurting and your rude comment is not unacceptable, may god be with you when you get the mail or pull out of the gas station or go to the store or work if you have a job since you sound "busy" with with your "tool".

It was not only school children. THe love of his life, his soul mate, was 2 cars behind the one that hit him, she saw the bike fly up in the air. She said he opened his eyes and she said she would get him help, she told the bus driver to tell them to hurry because he was still alive. She went back to him and he tried to speak, and blood came out instead, and he was gone, right before her eyes. The last thing he saw was the eyes of someone who truly loved him with her heart and soul. And its a good thing she was there, his "girlfriend" didnt know his full name, or his birthday. His true love wasnt allowed to leave until after the tow truck lifted the car off his chest and he was zipped into a body bag. At that point the children had been long gone from the scene.
What a fine man Mitchell was. Nobody will miss him more than the one who loved him most.

Mitchell( I have known him for 40+ years and NEVER called him anything but Mitchell), was truly a wonderful person, we grew up knowing each other, went to school together and knew many of the same people, our mothers knew one another. I loved him, he had a heart as big as the world and a smile that brightened it. Nothing ever kept him from smiling> I went to see him the day after he lost his leg, also after being hit by a car. He was still smiling, I was trying not to cry but he told me"Stop that Sweet", I am still alive. I will never ever forget my friend. He will be in my heart always.

did you look at that area?
thee were no sidewalks there.
this s a reason why I moved from that area, people flew and never cared about people on thier bikes.
the spaae limit on that road is 50 with many hills, they need to make a bike trail, that is for sure.
Thank You Bri-Daisy told me you called her and told her about Mitchell.
To the heartless person who said Mitchell fell off his bike, all I can say is BS. Mitchell used to ride motocycles with only one leg, and that takes more balance then a bike. He was also a warm and wonderful human being, he was my frind of over 40 years. Show a little respect to him. You don't know a thing about him, yet you insult him in death, such a great person you are. Mitchell had more love and careing in the tip of his finger nail then you have in your whole soul-less body. To whoever it was that was with my friend, I thank you for being there to hold him. I am glad he saw love in your eyes before he went on his journey to the other side. I LOVE YOU MITCHELL and you will stay in my heart and my memories forever my friend.

Sorry, forgot to add this. The first article stated that the bus driver had their lights flashing, and the "stop" sign out. And now? Their headlights were flashed?

I think you are refering to the person calling him mike, we call him Big Mitch because of his son, being his name sake.
Mitchel Helms, he is taking this so hard, say a prayer for him .
Again, this is so tragic for all, alot of people have been hurt here.
Mitchel is gone, loved ones witnessed this, children.
and people come one here and "PLAY" I could see if you were posting a opinion, being sick about a child is going way to far, its all good, your laughing now.

Dontcha just love those drive-by posters? Everyone should HAVE to fill out a profile in order to post. Tracking and banning these fools by their ISPs would be wonderful.

I could think of a few other things that would be nice in this case.
I did say she was 13 and he went to far!

My sympathies to all involved, like I said earlier this is a sad day for all.(kids on the bus included). Also thank you to Scott for mentioning the change in the news article, I thought I was losing it for a minute, maybe they should wait till they have all the details then put the story up!!

I have to say as an eighth grader at Whitehall it was definatly hard to deal with it at school. I was not on the bus but some of my friends were and even Mr. Harris's nieces.

I am still praying for the family and friends. He sounded like a wonderful person.

These drive by posters are really irking me. Please help control the fleas by flagging all posts that are not appropriate. They will be pulled if enough people flag them.

i'm a student at whitehall middle school and i have to say, this was really hard to deal with at school. people were literally running around the hallway going, "our bus saw a guy get run over!" for the whole day, everyone was talking about how sad it was. but sad isn't even the right word to describe this accident.

Here I am again..with another friendly service announcement..... I think I need to macro this and get it over with...
This is a NEWS forum. WZZM was nice enough to link up with TOPIX and allow this space to comment on news articles they put on line. This is also a free speech zone, as long as that free speech is within the TOS agreement with TOPIX. No where on this page does it say it is a memorial page. This would mean that people are allowed to post their thoughts and comments about the news article it's attached to. Just because you don't agree with said comment or opinion does NOT mean it's no going to be posted. There have been other forums where people have actually threatened bodily harm because they don't agree with someone's opinion. I don't know about you.. but that's not the USA with freedom of speech I am a proud citizen of.
