How in the world can you miss a school bus' flashing red lights?? Especially at that time in the morning when it is still dark? This person should be given a ticket for failing to stop at the red lights and for hitting this poor guy! I am sure there will be charges already for him hitting and killing him.
My condolences to the man's family and I hope those kids can cope that saw it!
Apparently dumb a** you can't read. Where does it say Red lights?????
District bus was near the scene of collision, and its driver flashed the bus' headlights to warn an oncoming car.

The story that this webpage is not very accurate i mean i don't want to be mean or anything but my mother was there at the scene and she witnessed all of it ok. She loved Mitchell with all her heart and soul and she watched him die that man hit mitchell because she seen his bike go right into the air and the bus driver let my mom use their phone ok and the man he ignored the buses lights and hit mitchell and then he drove his car on top of mitchell. that mans car was on mitchell's chest and my mom watched mitchell die he didn't die instantly. He died shortly after while in her arms ok so please don't put that mitchell fell because mitchell yes he has one leg but he is the strongest man i have ever met even a man with two legs ok mitchell has never fell. So please don't say he fell ok please its killing my mom that the news is trying to say he fell he didn't fall he got hit and then fell ok so please if u could please give her a call please well thnax for ur time and listening concern

Obviously need you to go back to charm school.

When this article first came out, it did NOT say flashed it's headlights. So, when you finally take your foot out of your mouth, maybe you should go back through and see that a LOT of us commented on it, AND even Joe said the aticle has been changed.

Here I am again..with another friendly service announcement..... I think I need to macro this and get it over with...

This is a NEWS forum. WZZM was nice enough to link up with TOPIX and allow this space to comment on news articles they put on line. This is also a free speech zone, as long as that free speech is within the TOS agreement with TOPIX. No where on this page does it say it is a memorial page. This would mean that people are allowed to post their thoughts and comments about the news article it's attached to. Just because you don't agree with said comment or opinion does NOT mean it's no going to be posted. There have been other forums where people have actually threatened bodily harm because they don't agree with someone's opinion. I don't know about you.. but that's not the USA with freedom of speech I am a proud citizen of.

~end of service announcement and back to your regularly scheduled programming~

Yeah I think we need to add that as a signature to all of our posts.

And WZZM needs to have the facts before they publish them, not supposed facts that are changed over and over again.

My heart goes out to his friends and family, I live nearby and always saw him riding his bike everywhere. I had to take my Son to school this morning he had to be there early, we passed him on the way to school. If my Son had rode the bus as he usually does he would have been one to have witnessed the accident. It is just very sad and tragic.

I got to school this morning and my best friend came running up to me, half-crying. "My bus," she said, "We saw a crash." She explained everything to me, but I didn't fully understand until teachers told everybody. 2 boys had to leave because the man was related to them. It was so sad.

I heard about the accident this morning from my dad for whom my brother called my mom and dad and told them. I immediately got on the phone and called my brother, he said he had walked down to the accident and had just gotten back, he said Amy it was so bad i couln't stay any longer. Mitchell was a very good friend of mine, and it was a priviledge to know him. My heart goes out to mitchells family and loved ones who knew him.My prayers are with you all. i do hope the children on the bus will be able to cope with what they saw, no person should have to deal with that. My heart goes out to the driver for whom he has to live with this tragedy for the rest of his life. Please everyone who knows (exactly) what happened let OUR PRAYERS BE WITH EVEYONE!!!!!!!!!! SADDLY MISSING YOU MITCH........

MIke was a close friend of mine. I was saddend to hear of this tragic accident. Mike was the type of guy that everyone should have the priviledge of knowing. He was a very kind man, willing to help anyone out. He never let his handicap of one leg stop him, and he often made jokes to his friends about being a one legged man. I and everyone that know him, will miss him terribly. I can truely say that it was a priviledge to call him my friend. For all of you that are making comments about his bicycle not having reflectors or lights or the car not paying attention or the bus driver lights on, you should be ashamed of yourselves becasue you DONT know the situation. first off the artical said the bus driver flashed the HEAD LIGHTS, not the red or yellow lights. Second off, Mike had many finacial struggles and THAT bicycle was his only transportation. I would like to see how many of you would go to work everyday, riding a bicycle with only ONE leg. I have personally seen him fall off of his bike, and the type of guy that he was, he would make a joke of it and GET RIGHT BACK ON. With all of the terrible things that happen in this world, the greatest travisty is to loose someone as compasionate, determined and people loving as my friend Mike. All Im asking is this, please know the facts before you post a comment on the site without truely understanding the situation. This world lost a truely great one today.

I know in the Hudsonville/Jenison area the lights blink yellow first warning drivers the bus is about to stop and they don't turn red until the actually stop the bus.
The person that hit him more than likely was trying to beat the lights turning red so he wouldn't have to wait twenty seconds for a bus and to bad he/she was paying to much attention to trying to beat the bus than someone in the road.
Yes the man should have had a light and reflectors on his bike, but that really besides the point.
Stupid people are just in way to much of a hurry these days.
My thoughts and prayers are with this poor mans family.
as I understand it right from people , the driver flasherd her headlights, she was sitting on the side of the road.I think her red lights were flashing as well.

stay out of the road???
did you look at that area?
ther were no sidewalks there.
this s a reason why I moved from that area, people flew and never cared about people on thier bikes.
the spaae limit on that road is 50 with many hills, they need to make a bike trail, that is for sure.

Let's not be too quick to blame the driver of the car. It sounds like the bicycle rider contributed to the circumstances as well. It's just very sad.

I do not even want to read this whole thread, this summer has been to much on my family!

Big Mitch. you will be loved and missed by all that knew you!

I hope that lakewood club will put a bile trail there so people have a place to ride, speed limit is 50 and many hills there.

It is a deadly area for anyone trying to walk or ride a bike.

love to the family,
