How in the world can you miss a school bus' flashing red lights?? Especially at that time in the morning when it is still dark? This person should be given a ticket for failing to stop at the red lights and for hitting this poor guy! I am sure there will be charges already for him hitting and killing him.
My condolences to the man's family and I hope those kids can cope that saw it!

What a terrible accident. There are too many people getting killed these past few months. Seems like that's all the news is about everyday.

What a sad story. A car failing to stop at a school buses flashing red lights, and then hitting and killing a man in the process.

My deepest sympathies and prayers to the friends and family of the victim.

What if it had been 10 students crossing the road to get onto the bus? People like the driver need punishment, and it should be severe.

I have seen cars try to pass my daughters school bus when the flashing red lights are on, and I've let them have it. My kids have to cross the street to get on the bus when it arrives and I am always right there making sure there isn't an idiot trying to pass the bus while they are crossing.

Oh my goodness. How sad for that poor gentleman and how horrible for those children and that bus driver to see!

What in the world was going on thru the person's mind who hit the bicyclist??? Its bad enough they took a life of someone, period... but what if it had been one of the kids on that bus who was crossing?

People need to slow down and pay attention! Life is too short and things like this happen in just a split second that destroys lives, families, friends....

Oh those poor babies that had to see this!!!!!

RED BLINKING LIGHTS MEAN STOP!!!!!!!

Just because you don't see kids crossing the road doesn't mean their aren't going to! The kids know they can't cross the road until the driver signals them too, and the driver looks to make sure people are stopped. so, just because you don't see kids crossing doesn't mean you don't STOP!

I know in the Hudsonville/Jenison area the lights blink yellow first warning drivers the bus is about to stop and they don't turn red until the actually stop the bus.

The person that hit him more than likely was trying to beat the lights turning red so he wouldn't have to wait twenty seconds for a bus and to bad he/she was paying to much attention to trying to beat the bus than someone in the road.

Yes the man should have had a light and reflectors on his bike, but that really besides the point.

Stupid people are just in way to much of a hurry these days.

My thoughts and prayers are with this poor mans family.

Sounds like the bicyclist was at least just as much at fault. Until people know the postion of the car and the distance of the bike to the bus and car and how much time the car had to react to the flashing lights (did they just come on and were they fully activated?). They only certainties from the story are that the bicyclist was not in compliance with the law regarding lights and proper lane usage. I hope they do a follow up. Let's not convict the driver until more info comes out.

I myself have come up on school buses with their yellow lights flashing, alot of time they put them on way before the stop, which is good, but maybe this driver thought he still had time to pass? Although I think the article states that the red lights were flashing, that would be different. some responsibility has to fall on the bike rider also, My wife and I were coming home one night in the rain mind you and out of nowhere this bike rider, whereing dark clothes of course was right there missed him, although scared the crap out of us!!!!

I have to say it, but I have to agree with Tom on this one. I leave for work every morning around 6:45 and 7 am and it still very dark out. It would be very difficult see a bike with no lights are that time in the morning especally when he crosses in front of you.

I think we need to wait for some updates to come out on this one.

After reading the article in the Muskegon Chronicle I got the impression that the bus driver put them on real quick to alert the other drivers, but it was too late. It is a terrible accident, and even worse that kids had to witness it, but riding a bike while dark is dangerous enough let alone with no reflectors. I have on numerous occasion came up on runners and bikers at night and barely missed them because they didn't have reflectors on.

I believe it was raining at the time as well and that would have made it even more difficult to see the man.

I just feel for the driver in this case also, Myself encountering people in the road when it is dark out, scares you to death, and puts everyone in a dangerous situation.

MIke was a close friend of mine. I was saddend to hear of this tragic accident. Mike was the type of guy that everyone should have the priviledge of knowing. He was a very kind man, willing to help anyone out. He never let his handicap of one leg stop him, and he often made jokes to his friends about being a one legged man. I and everyone that know him, will miss him terribly. I can truely say that it was a priviledge to call him my friend.

For all of you that are making comments about his bicycle not having reflectors or lights or the car not paying attention or the bus driver lights on, you should be ashamed of yourselves becasue you DONT know the situation. first off the artical said the bus driver flashed the HEAD LIGHTS, not the red or yellow lights. Second off, Mike had many finacial struggles and THAT bicycle was his only transportation. I would like to see how many of you would go to work everyday, riding a bicycle with only ONE leg. I have personally seen him fall off of his bike, and the type of guy that he was, he would make a joke of it and GET RIGHT BACK ON. With all of the terrible things that happen in this world, the greatest travisty is to loose someone as compasionate, determined and people loving as my friend Mike. All Im asking is this, please know the facts before you post a comment on the site without truely understanding the situation. This world lost a truely great one today.

I was there, my sister told him she was getting help, he looked at her and tried to talk and then he was gone.He had trouble with his bike chain. He was the love of her life, and she saw him get hit and then watched him die looking into her eyes.
God is amazing
She would not have been there at that exact moment except my son had to be to school early.

This wasn't the same article you had posted earlier. You state facts in one article, that are different from the current article.
Maybe you should not just post the changed article, but also make note that previously reported.... but now, confirmed... Makes it hard to trust your reporters for the correct news. At least admit when something has been reported wrong the first/second, etc... time.
This is the fifth time reports in an article have changed to go against what was said in the first reporting of the item.
Just a thought.

Sorry, forgot to add this. The first article stated that the bus driver had their lights flashing, and the "stop" sign out. And now? Their headlights were flashed?
