this is the reason that people think that Riverwest is a bad area. i have had friends who have lived down here for years and my fiancee has lived in Riverwest for years and i have been living here with her for about 8 months. it is a great community minus the people who don't wanna act right. we work to make it a better neigborhood for al. as the old addage goes "it only takes a few bad apples to spoil to the bunch". so to the "bad apples" take your gunplay somewhere else and quit ruining the reputation of the rest of us trying to Riverwest a better place. thanks.

Riverwest IS a bad area. One murder and numerous shootings just in the last week.

One murder and numerous shootings does not necesarily make it a bad area.

OK, here's another example of why this is a bad neighborhood: If there was community outrage and shock maybe I would perceive Riverwest as a better neighborhood. No outrage, no shock, no community meetings demanding answers. The majority of residents in bad neighborhoods tend to get used to crime and accept it. Not all, but most. Even Ted basically responding that, it's just one murder and a few shootings, implies he has gotten used to violent crime.

I basically heard two things from the many Riverwest residents I know the murder 1)the murder victim had a previous drug conviction and 2)that his apartment was for rent on craigslist two days after his death. Real nice.

in the neighborhood where i live there is outrage about this behavior. i don't like my wife taking our dog out at nite by herself which is upsetting to me. most of the residents of our community aren't carrying pistols and shooting at each other. we are trying to get dogparks approved and make our community safer. i don't think riverwest should be branded a "bad neighborhood" because some assfaces want to play with guns. it happens all over the city and in the suburbs too. unfortunately it has been happening in our area recently. to be honest i really don't have a problem with them killing each other over a couple bucks or some other ridiculous "reason". it's one less waste of space for all of us to pay for for generations to come. it's just sad that these people ruin what is a great community.

As someone who lives in Menomonee Falls I do view Riverwest as a less than desirable area. Let's face it, it sits in the center of Milwaukee's ghetto. I find it unreal that your wife would actually walk at night there and you admit that it bothers you, so indirectly you are acknowledging it's not so great. Furthermore I find your comment,

"to be honest i really don't have a problem with them killing each other over a couple bucks or some other ridiculous "reason",

incredibly inappropriate and not something openly stated by someone that wants to improve the image of the neighborhood that they live in.

all i was saying was that i don't care if the undesirables kill each other. i would rather that they don't do so in our community but if it culls the herd....
i am not one to hold my tongue. it makes me sad that i have to worry about my wife taking our dog 10ft out of the building to whiz at night. i really enjoy living here and it is safe for the most part. it is a community with tons of local business' and people trying to make it better and having open minds to accept all different people and lifestyles. there are gonna be bad apples everywhere and to my frustration ours are showing too often lately. i don't know how much time you've spent in Riverwest but it is nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be. i stand by my neighborhood and my comments. everyone see's through different windows and is entitled to their opinions.

Agreed on the shooting lessons, except for a few flaws.
It would require too much discipline and commitment, Not to mention the instructor's reaction, when one of those idiots held a pistol sideways.LOL!

I give the people of Riverwest credit for taking a stand, even though it isn't always reported in the press.

The alternative is moving out to a lily-white suburb, northwest of Milwaukee.

thank you Windsavage. people that don't live or frequent here only know what they are told on the news, which for the most part is unfortunately the bad news. i didn't hear any reports on how great Locust St. day was only about a random fool who gt his hands on a pistol. props to you for supporting Riverwest and it's good qualities.

my best friends lived in riverwest....i paid a little bit more to live in shorewood. i never got mugged, assaulted, or a gun drawn on me. the parking cops were the assholes in that community. my friends on the other hand (two uw students) who lived in riverwest had so many problems, from break ins to a mugging and beating that left my friends with 2 cracked teeth and broken ribs. the truth is he was lucky that he wasnt killed. some luck huh??? just like im lucky i chose a safe neighborhood instead of the getto......it amazes me people from riverwest have such a blaze attitude towards violent crimes on their own block. you live in riverwest and random violence hasn't happened to you....yet :( but it will. and if you happen to be white it might actually get some news coverage...

i agree with you that the crime rate is higher in Riverwest than Shorewood but as i have stated before we are working towards having an open and accepting community minus the crime. the neighbohood i live in everyone pretty much watches out for everyone else. i love and get along swimmingly with almost all of my neighbors. i will not let the undesireables drive me away from a place i love to live.

Do you really think living in Shorewood protects you from crime? Where do you think people go to steal? I live in RW and have never had a problem with crime--when I lived across the river, I had two cars stolen and a break in. I also had friends who got jumped and robbed in "nice" college areas around UWM.

As regards RW being a "getto"--you just said that you never had problems there. Try going to a real ghetto one day and tell me then that RW is a ghetto; if it were, you wouldn't go there. Just because all the people in my neighborhood aren't white doesn't make it a ghetto.

Are you kidding me, no community outrage?! How the heck would you know? You should get facts before you speak. You only hear about the crime on the news, not the community reaction. I live in Riverwest (and own a home there), and there have been community meetings following the shootings, there is a regular neighborhood watch patrol, and increased police presence. There is crime everywhere and it just so happens that there has been some that has been publicized in Riverwest lately. Violence and crime has gone down in the last 20 years, and this neighborhood is coming around.

thank you! another person standing up for our community! we know that Riverwest is NOT a bad area but has been publicized as so lately. when the news reports a shooting on the north or northwest side it's viewed as commonplace. clearly these people have been targeting victims in our neighborhood. again, thank you. if you don't like Riverwest, stay the hell out in your suburb!!!!

Daily Horoscope for January 7

Aquarius

Avoid making promises today, or even believing in other people's promises. Today is not a good day to make commitments, as they are not likely to materialise. Taking risks is a no-no. Try to relax until the numbers are in your favour. Those pursuing their career will benefit.
