Death penalty supporters urge 'Justice for Jennifer'

Feb 21, 2010 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Death penalty backers rallied in Greensburg on Saturday and signed a petition urging "justice for Jennifer." Organizer Stephen Smolleck said he wanted to demonstrate support for imposing the death penalty on those responsible for the torture and slaying of Jennifer Daugherty, a 30-year-old mentally disabled woman from Mount Pleasant.

Ricky Smyrnes, the ring leader of the horrific torture murder in Greensburg was a long time student at Wesley Spectrum Higland School where he beat up autistic children and was never consequenced. Instead, they gave him candy. Also, he never did any work in class and would usally sleep. Wesley graduated him anyways. This institution should be held accountable! My child was brutalized by Smyrnes as well as other conduct problem students. The administration did nothing to prevent such acts. No wonder, Smyrnes murdered! Wesley Spectrum is a very bad school that encourages hostile behavoir! Anonymous Parent

It is a Special education School that is supposed to look after Autistic children. Unfortunatley, they put hostile conduct problems in the same class and let these types pick on the helpless. I would complain to no end, but they never did anything to resolve these issues. Instead, they would reward students like Ricky Smyrnes by giving him candy bars. I do wish someone would do something before another casualty happens. Wesley Spectram Highland School is located in Whitehall and there so-called administration pampers kids like Ricky Smyrnes. No wonder he kills!
If it was okay to punch handicapped kids in the face in school, than he probably thought it was okay to kill! I and other parents are outraged at this school and their lack of care for the truly needy!

John Peck is not going after the death penalty. He is going to prolong the trial past his reelection bid. He doesn't want the black community upset, and also tyhe 6 who murdered have mental issues, so those mitagating circumctances are what based in his decison.

Is that a fact? Only one of those murderers was black.the other 5 were white.what about not upsetting the WHITE community with his decision to play pantywaist over such a terrible crime as these dipwads committed???

Mental issues, huh? They weren't so "mental" that they did not attempt to hide her body after they killed her. They knew what they did was wrong.

TO H*** with liberals like this John Peck whoever he is.He obviously hasn't had a family member or loved one murdered or he'd feel differently. That's one reason we have such crime running rampant out the wazoo,NOT seeking the death penalty.
I don't live there, but,I hope he LOSES his reelection bid.

Woah. Wait a second. How does this school have to do with his actions?? He's a 30 year old loser. That school really had nothing to do with him now. I'm sure he had repercussions unknown to you. Yes they do tend to use less consequences. Just because he was a bad seed don't blame the school. A lot has changed at this wonderful program. You shouldn't be quick to judge. Some cases are lost causes. You don't see what they've done for others including myself. I got consequenced for actions less terrible then beating up kids. You just had a bad experience. He was there well over 13 years ago. Don't go blaming a magnificent school like ours. They don't give out candy. I said it once, I'll say a million times. Can't help someone who doesn't want to be fixed. The people there are only human. Yes there definitely should be justice for Jennifer. That was a terrible disgusting thing they did to her. It's heart breaking what happened. In ending I would like all my prayers, hope, and love to Jennifer and her family.

I looked at the docket sheets for smyrnes and knight. They're both charged with criminal homicide, not first degree murder, which is required for the death penalty. Is criminal homicide a charge in itself or can it also cover first degree murder?

Criminal homicide is a charge unto itself which can cover a broad spectrum of various charges/penalties. For the most part, it is used for preliminary charges until a determination of actual "degree of murder" charges can be filed.

I believe the people involved in murdering Jennifer, were in the wrong. They are all trying to plead insainity and or saying they have mental problems and have no idea what they were doing. Newsflash the did know what they were doing, they knew it was wrong, thats why they hid the weapons and the body. if this was your child you would want to see the death penity, this girl trust everyone and tried to make friends. She was a mentally challeged girl that had the brains of a 12-14yr girl who had no way of defending herself. And everyones double questioning on wether they deserve the death penity. they killed this girl, they deserve to die, if they get away with it this time, they will do it agian, this girl did nothing wrong. they tortured her for 3days. and thats ok because they say they are sorry? i dont think so... Jen didnt deserve to die. They stabbed her. they tortured ther for 3day but had no idea what they were doing and didnt think they were doing wrong.... within the 3days they wouldve realized what they were doing and walked out but did they no they finished her and killed her and ended the life she knew. this was a horriflying murder. and no one should be realsed for murder....

I think that this should not even be a discussion for the fact that she was taken, abused and tortured and then killed. She had family and friends who loved her and now they have only their memories. The death penalty is justice for all that those 6 people did to Jennifer. They are not sorry for what they did and their "Mental Impairment" is a ploy to get out of paying for the crime they committed. If they really didn't know they were doing wrong then why did they hide Jennifer's body and the weapons... They need to pay for the life they took and they way they took it. John Peck... Vote YES to death!!!

This tragedy would not have happened to Jennifer if Greensburg city officials had established rental codes (no more than 2 apartments/large inner city home), relocate Behavioral Health Center next to the YMCA, relocate parole office 4 blocks from all other psych patients' bait , and shut down the Mental Health Clubhouse on Main Street.

NO MORE ENCOURAGING PSYCH PATIENTS AND WELFARE TROLLS TO LIVE OR RECEIVE SERVICES NEAR DOWNTOWN GREENSBURG! THESE PEOPLE ARE SCARY AND CLEARLY DANGEROUS! WAKE-UP! THEY ARE CHASING AWAY PEOPLE FROM OUR DOWNTOWN STORES AND THE LIBRARY. PARENTS ARE AFRAID OF THE DOZENS OF SPOOKIES HANGING OUT NEAR THE YMCA. MOVE THESE PSYCHOS OUT OF OUR CITY.

Greensburg definitely needs to do something about all of the single family homes being divided into 2-4 apartments. Whole neighborhoods are being decimated by this practice. Parking is a nightmare, even though "off the street" parking is required, no one is compelled to use it. In many neighborhoods you cannot even park in front of your own home. What were once family neighborhoods are now transient areas. This is being allowed to benefit a few, while long time residents and homeowners suffer. Its interesting that the City Council is worried about college students living too close to each other while nut cases, drug dealers and ne'er do wells can move about and occupy neighborhoods with impunity. Urban blight has a new face in Greensburg.

Hello, DoSomething!
I would happily choose any college student over the drug addicts, psych patients, and welfare trolls, but college students don't want to live on my Greensburg street. It is too scary for them.

If our "great leaders" want to improve Greensburg and increase Seton Hill's`
ability to increase their employment for more Greensburg citizens, they must reduce the welfare trolls, drug addicts, and psych patients around downtown, Academy Hill, and the surrounding neighborhoods near Otterman St., and Rt. 130. The area surrounding Seton Hill should be safe and without scary people to attract college students and their $$$$.

Implementing zoning laws, removing Behavioral Health and eliminating the Mental Health Club House on Main Street would help the city of Greensburg. Greensburg must not open a day program for convicts on S. Maple Street as planned. It is ridiculous that City Council is excited about adding hundreds of paroled convicts to the numerous psych patients stumbling around the YMCA. We must protest the Convict Day Program decision before it the program is actually implemented.
