Vermonter is captain of U.S. ship hijacked by Somali pirates

The top two commanders of an American-flagged ship hijacked by pirates off Somalia graduated from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy.

They are not allowed to carry weapons, being merchant ships.

Why does the U.S. allow American ships to sail into these waters? We have sent American millitary into harms way once again with this latest terrorist action. If these ships enter these waters it shoul be at their own risk and with their own security detail.
