I now this is a silly topic, but my curiosity is getting the better of me. I sat with my wife tonight and watched pretty woman on the oxygen channel. I know this is an older film but they have been playing it nonstop lately. I looked it up on google and it was made in 1990 and grossed almost a half billion dollars. Of course as we all know this is a "chick flick" and most of the movie audience is women. It is rated as the number one movie ever in this genre. Meaning most women will tell you it's in their top five if not the top of their favorite movies......if you ask women why they like the movie they say it's like a fairy tale..that every single woman would like to be rescued in that way..now I'm getting to my long drawn out point...If you break the movie down Richard Gere's character Edward Lewis as a mega rich man in his middle to late 40's...Julia Roberts character Vivian is a Prositute who is 24........now if you ask any of these same woman what they think about prostitution or rich men finding young woman they tell you how disgusting that is.....SO WHY IS IT OK IN THIS MOVIE?? and yes I have too much time on my hand..lol...but I'd like some answers

I can't explain it but I've wondered the exact same thing. I guess Julia Roberts justifies anything.

My question was why do women love that movie so much, but yet in everyday life despise prostitutes and older rich guys with younger women?.........breaking down scenes from the movie doesn't answer that..if this was a test you would get an A for effort but F for question comprehension ...lol, just messing around, u did try, thks

That's a great answer for the Prositute part of the question, what about the rich older guy, younger woman part of the question? I wonder why during casting they didnt get them closer in age

I think they had a 'type' more in mind than an 'age' ...

Maybe it's Pygmalion updated past the My Fair Lady level to today's culture/standards, with lots of sanitizing.

some people do look older, I'm not sure what that has to do with the movie, in the opening scene it was said he was in his late 40's...also the end scene Vivian says to her friend "I'm 24, and want to do something with my life"....I do agree woman can dream of falling with "mr right" , but my point is in real life woman get mad when they see an older guy with a younger woman, so it all seems a little hypocritical to me......but also what u are saying is its ok to be a Prositute as long as u don't do drugs combined?
