Very sad the school has let him break the spirit of those young boys.He needs to retire he is burnt out and he is a bully. He has no respect for the school the kids or the parents.I think he has some serious issues and he needs dealt with before a kid gets hurt.I have never seen anyone like to treat kids that way in front of the public that gets to keep theire jobs. When other schools start to complain its went to far.He is a jerk or he need help either way he needs away from those boys

Not long......this is going to happen. Watch the papers and WSAZ after basketball tournaments.

I got on this page by accident and i just wanted to see about my old town. And i read this crap. Best coach I ever had. Discipline, high character, and truly cared about me. People talk about coaching when they should be talking about work ethic. Players are made by the work they put in by themselves and then molded by the coach during the season. Basketball takes strength, skill (shooting, dribbling, passing, etc.), intangibles, speed, and quickness...oh yes and a lot of time. I have seen this team play. Hard working kids with high character...like their coach. Sometimes winning is a vague and often resolute word. I think they are winning. Experts...ask yourself a question or two and be honest...are they as talented as Valley, Minford, Oak Hill, South Webster, or even West? They win when they should. They compete in all games. I can't stand this generation of sports fans. Win them all or be fired...ridiculous. A guy goes to three state tournaments, wins multiple conference, sectional, district, and regional tournaments. He will be a hall of famer and he is the problem? Did he tell me things I didn't like? Absolutely. Did he yell? Absolutely. Did I get upset? Absolutely. Would I be the man, father, or community member I am today without him? Absolutely NOT. Don't comment to me because I no longer want to visit, read, or associate with this site ever again. Have a good day and may god bless you with all the knowledge of the game...I forgot he already has.

I agree with everyone else. He knows the game. That's not what people are saying. He actually coaches a good game in terms of strategy but he's a jerk. And a lot of talented boys don't play anymore because of it. This in return makes the program suffer. Is he the worst person with no morals? No. But he needs to change something's. You earn people's respect by showing respect and I doubt you're a good man, father and husband just because of Tom Barrick. If so I wouldn't admit to it. Don't lower yourself.

I doubt former player has seen a game this year,i also doubt that a game of basketball with him as a coach made you the citizen you are today.I am saying it is sad to see him destroy a game that should be about the boys and the school. When other schools fans start complaining and making statements about his actions and you are the losing team you have a problem in your system.
He is walking a thin line of needing anger management and being a bully. When the fans are tense and no one is enjoying the game someone needs to step up and say enough is enough.

well im not a big basketball fan nor do i know the coach. but i just believe its just like any other sport or just like any other school. you have your good years and your bad. im sure there is talent there but sometimes it takes teamwork you have to be on the same page as your teammates sometimes they will click and sometimes they dont. these is just young kids learning. its not like its pro basketball and these kids are drafted onto this team. give them a break its just a high school sport people. i think this is the problem with our area sports to many parents or fans or who ever gets to involved and goes to far with it. im not saying the coach isnt working for them. maybe a different coach might help. but regardless of the situation let these boys play and have fun with it. thats what it takes sometimes. have fun and enjoy your school sports if you dont like the coach oh well do what you do and do your best and you will succeed.

He was bitch when I was in high school there too. He only played people whose parents had money! Parents who donated money to the school/team were the only ones who got playing time even if they sucked. There are so many instances of this every year. Think about it. I would love to knock him the f*uck out!

You're right. At least that's how it was when I was in school. The only boys he played a lot that's parents didn't hold this status was those Yelley boys. For some reason he liked them. They had some talent but he played them over other people that should have played. I wasn't good enough to get playing time my junior year but was a walk-on my freshmen year of college. Tell me if that makes sense.

I haven't seen a burg basketball game in nearly 20 years. In fact, the last time I think was Barrick's first or second year when they beat Hartley and Esteban Weaver in the final 4 in Columbus.

So I can't say anything good or bad about him, as far as how he conducts himself on the court. Just basing on his overall win-loss career, he is very successful.

But this whole thing reminds me of 2 generations ago. They got rid of Lovenguth after having an "off year", going 17-3. I wasn't the biggest Lovenguth fan, because he imposed his religious beliefs on everyone. But I still liked him and respected him, and I think he was done wrong by going 17-3 and losing his job.

Anyways, the point I'm trying to make to you young guys is this.... No high school can afford to fire a coach.

You've all watched too much college and pro ball, where the teams can afford to fire a coach, and still pay another coach. That doesn't happen in high school ball. They can't afford to do so.

Lovenguth wasn't fired either, his contract was over and the board decided not to renew it. Barrick was hired shortly after.

The key to the whole thing is timing. If the coach isn't winning enough games, look at the expiration date on his coaching contract.

Correction. The board didn't decide to not renew his contract. Mathew McFarland did!

He is a great Coach and knows the game! I played for him and he never spoke to my parents. These players are the softest players I have ever seen! Mommy's boys! Everything handed to them! No effort! They are embarrassing to watch! It's not the coach! Some these boys probably can't wipe their own asses! They acted same way in football. Just played weaker schedule so easy wins. When certain players needed to step up in big games! They chocked! Look at Valley game and playoff game! Who didn't show up?

I played for him and he was tough but so is life! My parents never had money or the burg names but I worked hard and earned my playing time. I have been to games for years since I graduated. These past several years there has been NO talent on the Burg teams. Probably only one player that could start on any other team in our league. Wake up u complainers! How much time has your son put in during the off season??? Not much because I was at open gyms and your sons were not there!! Yes he us a tough coach but he made me a better player and person. I would let him coach my children! Boy or girl!! Great motivator! Knows the game! Just doesn't baby your son like most coaches do! Or you did when u coached your own son! Coach never has played a kid because of who the parents are! Quit making excuses for your little babies and tell them to grow a pair and work harder!

As usual the spoiled Burg people blame losses on everyone but bad players! U have been blessed with a lot of talent in the past and now the well is dry. Seriously u guys are the most arrogant people I have ever known. Ur players are bad and don't work at the game. Basketball has to be worked at! Shooting all year around! Anybody with basketball knowledge knows that Burg has been lucky to have Barrick! He has won alot of games for Burg when Burg didn't have a chance on paper! Name one game this year where Burg was the better team on paper! None! Lazy big headed players who think that playing time is given not earned! If only some were as good as their name!!!! Lol

What other job can u have where dumb ass people- aka Arm chair coaches- think their opinions are worth 2 cents?? Put the hours in, win over 400 wins and apply for the job! Only at the Burg!!! Where arrogant people raise spoiled brats who expect everything to be handed to them! When the going gets tough blame it on the coach cause little Johnny can't play! Like posted earlier , maybe ONE of your starters would start for most other teams in soc. The other 4 would sit the bench if they made the team!

You know it is very clear you posted all of these recent post? People do tend to exaggerate with Barrick. He's a good coach when it comes to knowing what to do with who's on the floor, calling plays, and getting his team in shape.

He's can be very discouraging to boys too. I don't care what anyone says, he plays favorites. Plain and simple. Yes, he plays hard workers and plays talented players that are really good but he also plays his favorites. I have seen him play people over the years that have sucked in every area of the game. And it wasn't because they hustled or had ability or whatever. It's because he liked them basketball aside.
