Joe Birkett's son has just managed to kill Joe's future political career which is a terrible shame. The fact that the judge dismissed the drug charges against Joe's son will be seen by many voters as "rank has it's privileges" whether strings were actually pulled or not with the arresting cops.
Assuming Joe and his son have a good relationship, this incident will haunt Joe's kid for the rest of his life knowing that he hurt his father's political career. A very sad situation for all involved. Joe is a good man and certainly didn't deserve this.

@William Shake A Spear

You are stupid. This won't hurt Joe Birkett's career. At all.

Unfortunately, because it should. But it won't. You clearly have no idea how these things work.

Ive never been a fan of Joe ever since I heard him make a derogatory comment about a minority his team was prosecuting. I was on probation at the time and leaving the DuPage Courthouse. But that all aside this just goes to show how easily strings can be pulled for the higher ups and their kin, especially since he was SO against Judge Jorgensen's drug court.

Joe's kid was at a party where a tiny amount of marijuana was found. He had nothing to do with it and was probably only arrested because he was Joe's kid, by the extremely over aggressive and nazi naperville police department.

Wanna bet the two cops were 'advised' to testify that they forgot to read him his rights? Otherwise, we have to believe the cops were either incredibly stupid, or rookies, or both.

BTW, the Trib doesn't mention it, but Birkett's son was represented by someone else's son. His attorney was James M. Ryan, son of former Illinois Attorney General and DuPage County States Attorney Jim Ryan.

DuPage is no different than Chicago. If you find yourself arrested and in court, bring in all the clout you can and the charges will magically disappear.

The only good news is that the two cops got to keep their jobs and their pensions.

Membership does have it's privileges. Being an ordinary citizen means you pay dearly for any little thing the city can dream up. Try to stay invisible with the legal system and you can keep your sanity. There is no other way unless you have political connections. Ultimate power corrupts ultimately.

good news that cop keep their jobs, and especially pensions. take a look at your property tax sometime. these municipal pensions are bankrupting this state. and for this you get a police force known for its sloppy work. tough sprinkler patrol though. and now it appears to be a blatant buyoff. birkett will continue to run for office, he saw how daddy bush bought off everyone to help his son.

Big shocker there!!! Typical DuPage County politics in action. DuPage is all about who you know and support. Mr Birkett got what is called "A Professional courtesy" in the Law Enforcement community. This will be Mr. Birkett's one break...he won't get another one so I hope his kid wisens up fast.

It seems every time a political "person" finds themselves in a bit of perhaps.. unkind situations.. everyone forgets, Wow, what happens if that happened to me or my KID! Think about your own kid and how you would feel.. You you hope that in their home, things have changed.for sure the trust and loyalty has. I am sure that son is not thrilled with all that went on. ENOUGH! I hope JOE continues to fight for Du Page County... We forget just how good he has been...He keeps a huge populated area safe with justice served... I feel safe being a single MOM in this area. Not too many people in other counties can feel that! What walk your dog when it is dark... are you crazy! Ah, NO!!!!!!!

No, I'm pretty sure 'Killer Joe' and his kid are ELATED over what happened. If this had been just some kid from Aurora, Birkett would have shown just how 'tough on crime' he is.

But in this case, with his own political future on the line, it is belatedly revealed that two veteran cops on a routine drug bust suddenly forget to read the defendants their rights.

Yeah, right. The case was fixed, and those two officers either got with the program, or spend a lifetime on the graveyard shift.

Sorry to hear about the son. He was just being a kid something his dad knows nothing about considering the way he wastes time going after little guys and if he could would give them life or put them on death row. Remember Rolando Cruz? DNA cleared him and a serial killer conessed to that crime but NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Birkett still insisted he was guilty because he "had something to do with it". How pathetic you uncompromising tunnel vision jerk. States Attorneys are NOT "infallibale". Get that through your heads, all you self rightous, unbending, connot be wrong, political jerks. You would rather sentence a person to death then admit your prosecution was wrong. That makes you guilty of murder. After all you are politically motivated to get so many convictions so you can be called "tough on crime". Want to be tough on crime? Go to the Englewood distric in Chicago and work for a month as a "beat" cop.rean your bones that way instead of on the backs of poor defendants that cannot afford counsul like your son.

How a Dupage County States Attorney of the United States could throw out a recorded 1.5 hr recored statement of a minor being raped, without questioning victim, or family members or mother, or Leading therapist amazes me.
When I needed help with police I had to go to the inner city police to listen to me.
