I like people standing up for what they believe in, but where I draw the line is forcing that opinion on others. It is absolutely rediculious to try to force something onto kids, because most of them will push against you even harder. There will always be kids that smoke just like there will always be kids that have sex. Continue to educate young on the dangers of smoking, but this is just silly.

wow, now even the school CHILDREN are taking away our civil right. What are they going to do next??? Sit in the cafeteria and write up overweight kids for eating too much.

I have got to tell you that this is perhaps the most ill-conceived idea I have yet heard. Snitching in the world of teens is possibly one of the worst "crimes" a young person can commit. Turning teens against each other is a very dangerous precedent. Think hard before encouraging this kind of program. It will backfire.

Lets see....Student police patroling the school grounds lecturing other students about smoking or reporting them to the school authorities. This is an ill concieved plan. It will bring nothing but trouble for all involved.

I use to buy smokes for kids. Shit when I turned 21 I use to buy booze for kids as well

When smoking is banned then only criminals will have cigarettes.

So they will suspend a straight A student for smoking, possibly cause a scholorship to be dropped?
I don't smoke & hate the smoke, but come on, turning kids into criminals or drop-out because they use a legal drug? What if they are 18 & allowed to have tobacco? |
Little brown nose snitches! But I have to admit these kids do have it easy! When I was in school (too many years to count)if we got busted it was 1 week suspension!

I think it is a great idea. They're not handing out tickets for smoking off school grounds only if they are smoking on school grounds. All schools in Colorado have a no tobacco policy. If you want to kill yourself do it off of the school property. I wish all schools enforced this.
Think beyond, please. Schools now have no tobacco use policies everywhere, just as they have no drug use, no bookbags, no baggy pants, etc. They do all of these things to protect the kids and staff. This policy is not about smoking. It is about what happens when you USE kids to police others. In the world of teenagers, this is MAJOR. It is the stuff of revenge, up to and including violence. One of my duties as a young teacher in the inner city was to patrol the known smoking areas and grab kids who were smoking one thing or the other. This became one of the most dangerous jobs in the school. One teacher then was assigned to officially bust kids. In a period of three weeks, she was assaulted three times. Is this what you want for your children? It will go much worse for the kids than it did for the teacher. Please think beyond before jumping on this bandwagon. |

These are the kids I used to beat up when I was in school. Dumb Arse Crybabies!

As an ex-smoker (14 years to be exact, at 2 1/2 to 3 packs a day) I hate smoking, and it is a giant turn off. On the other hand this is supposed to be a free country. Many would prefer our lives to be regulated by others, as they feel we are incapable of taking care of ourselves. I for one find that to be criminal, in a free country. People will always do as they wish, and will rebel against anything, that seeks to destroy their freedom. Leave the kids alone, and educate them about the danger, but stop the wanna-be police state crap!

What a nice example of a good citizen. |

Its just wrong seeing a 15yr w/ there buddies huddled up s u c k i n g on the end of a s s. Parents need to be parents - plain and simple - no matter what you other mooks think - DO WHAT IT TAKES - Thats ur / our future! |
"So they will suspend a straight A student for smoking" - no even dumy - a straight A student is smarter then that. |

I really think that you need to re read the article. The students came up with the idea. The patrol people themselves are adults. It is a good policy, one that has an educational component behind it. Many schools have a zero tolerance policy and the students are suspended on the first offense. |

Teachers "don't look the other way" when it comes to smoker's "pits." At my school, we have protested our "pit" for years, all to no avail. I'm glad WRHS students are taking a stance against smoking near school grounds. I hope other high school students will do the same.

Yes, they will suspend a straight A student for smoking. This is a choice the student is making. The student had the opportunity to make the choice not to smoke on more than 1 occasion. If the student does not make the right choice, then maybe the scholarship deserves to go to a student with more maturity and straight A's from another school. Of course Marlboro could also step up to the plate and offer scholarships for students with straight A's who HAD been suspended. |
