Re Ace Inhibitors: YES they do cause the cough. Cough is listed as one of the possible side effects on the patient information paperwork that came with my prescription. I took Zestril and soon after developed a cough that happened day and night - the nighttime cough was especially difficult because I couldn't get any rest. My doctor also told me it wasn't the med either. I had never had anything like this before - it was a tickle in my throat that would come on at the worst times.

After suffering for four more months, I went back to him about the coughing and this time my doctor didn't even review my chart to take note I was on Zestril. He was ready to give me a steroid type med when I happened to mention I was on Zestril and then he told me not to take it anymore. duh.

I stopped taking it but it was a full week before the cough went away - so don't give up when after a couple days you are still coughing. It takes about 7 days for the drug to get out of your system and stop the coughing. I'm now on a beta blocker and my blood pressure is in the normal range and I feel much better.

Wishing you the best ---

The blood pressure medication is a DIRECT CAUSE
of the COUGH. It happened to me, I was sent to
a pulmonologist and he recommended getting off of
the medication and onto something else, and it worked.

I am on two BP meds and have been for almost three years. Since losing insurance the Atenorol was only $4 but the Diovan was $156. They changed it to one beginning with an E at 20 mg. and I began to cough and have coughed now for seven weeks. Being older this also causes me bladder problems and I got the flu with this for three weeks. It feels like a drop of water continually filling my bronical tubes. So I stopped it and now I am being told there is nothing else for me to take since Diovan is so expensive. What do I do ? They always ignore you or scare you to death about things. The last med I had that was bad was also a BP and my BP went up really high in 20 minutes of taking it and I got hives. The ER had nothing to offer in counteracting this. They said to wait and it would go down or have a heart attack. I went home, took two spoons of charcoal and a large glass of water, in 15 minutes I vomited my BP went to normal and the hives went away in an hour. What even happened before all these man made drugs ? And what happened to holistic thinking when working with patients problems.

I am on the zestral for a while now and I cough so bad at times it makes me puke. But I have cronic high blood pressure and need something to go with the 200 mg of antenol that I take a day. I have also tried the benicar and it does the same thing. What else would be good to take?

I just got off my little blue BP pill (ends in 'pril') because of 4 months of coughing. My doc told me today I fell into the 5% that this would be a side effect. Expect to have the cough for about 1-3 more weeks, he said. He prescribed another BP pill. I may go and pick it up and then, again, I may not. What if I don't really need it. I know it would be best if I just lost 40 lbs. Maybe I'll do that, instead. Meanwhile, I'll check my BP daily at Walgreens for a quarter. If it starts to go up I'll run to the Kaiser Pharmacy to get the newly prescribed pill.

Oh, I forgot to mention. I also had this nasal drip all night and could not get rid of it by swallowing. How odd!

My doctor just called and confirmed that the Lisinopril for my blood pressure is causing the coughing and I am to stay off of them for 7 days and monitor my blood pressure. I also explained that I purchase a vaporizer and added 1/2 teaspoon of salt and finally slept like a baby after many months of suffering with violent coughing and 3-5 hours sleep each day. Good luck to you!!

I just changed my blood pressure medicine last week and have done nothing but cough. It's so bad. I called the doctor and she is giving me something different but I'm not sure I want to even try it. I guess I will but I am so tired of coughing but my blood pressure is pretty high.

Since taking Quinapril HCL for the past 4 months, my blood pressure has steadily risen to where it was before I ever started taking meds.

I have had intolerable side-effects from 3 BP meds, but the worst was Lisinopril. It cased severe coughing - I couldn't believe it could be from a pill so I saw a, ENT specialist who confirmed it.
Now I'm searching for something that I can afford.

I just started taking lisionpril but it was prescribed for my kidneys instead of BP I already take atenolol for blood pressure and it seems to work fine..But since I started taking the lisinopril I have started coughing..I am also a type 2 diabetic and I am wondering if that is also causing my blood sugar to rise as well. If anyone can answer this for me..please do.

Could you please tell me the name of the BP medication that works, the one that does not cause the cough? I'm having a desperate time getting one that doesn't cause a cough.
Thanks from Rustey at rusteymeyer@comcast.net

I had a terrible cough all the time from Lisinopril (Why does FDA allow this to be sold and why do doctors prescribe it??). After an ENT dr. determined it was from that tiny pill, I switched to Benicar (20mg/day)- a major improvement , though with occasional coughing.
Buy it in 40 mg and split in half for about half the price.

Thanks for your reply; my doc has decided I can't be getting the cough from my BP med Norvasc...hmm, he has decided that since I'm 60 that I need to see a cardiologist. There is no heart problematic history in the family & I've passed a stress test with flying colors! Doc said if I pass a cardiologist then he'll send me to an ENT. I'm betting an ENT could help me. Anyway, tonight I am supposed to go back on Norvasc and I'm quite frightened but I'll give it one more shot.

I have developed a chronic cough and sometimes it is followed by the spitting up of clear fluid as a result of taking Lisinopril. I have been off the Lisinopril for about three weeks and the cough left for a week and has returned. I had a chest xray which came back clear. The FDA should take this drug off the market. According to a pulminary specialist I might have to suffer with this cough for up to three months as a result of this drug. I only took the drug for about a month in a half at 20mg before this cough developed. It is affecting my sleep and very embrassing when out in the public.

Hi Tyra:
I also developed a chronic cough as a result of takeing Lisinopril. I have only been taking it for a month and the cough is wicked. I could not sleep and would start coughing during meetings. It has been two days since I quite taking them and I am still coughing. I agree they should take this drug on the market. I hope your cough goes away sooner.
