I was in this class at Canton High, this was a disturbing time in my life. We were all friends Shaun, Rod myself and many others. We used to hang out all the time and do the same things kids our age 14 at the time did back then. In 86 this was equivalent to some teen shooting up the school. Rod was the class clown funny and liked by everyone. Shaun was very shy and had a small group of friends. Rod killed Shaun and then came to school, hung out after school and went along with life like nothing happened, that's the part that floored all of us, he was in school for a month acting as if he was concerned Shaun was missing. Rod made the mistake of telling a few people and showing them the body. They were friends as well. They dimed him out thank god. They caught Rod and he's been away since. Rod had my name and many others on a list of people he wanted to kill. When we found out it was Rod we were all sad for both families very hard situation for a 14yr old. Rod had no remorse and I don't think this is something you can fix, it's inherent he is one of those people that just had no feelings and was real empty inside. Hopefully he is better he was a great guy as I remember before all of this. RIP Shaun and May God Bless you and forgive you for your horrible sin Rod.

I don't believe ADD drugs caused Rod Matthews to do what he did. I believe he is a mentally troubled person and his parents and the medical community hoped the ADD drug would help him, but the drug did not help him because there was more going on there. The drug did not cause him to act out like that.

Back in 1988 or 1989 I was picked for a Committee from Middlesex County to look into the Correctional facilities within Middlesex County. I toured the Concord State Prison and was escorted into the Isolation Unit. In this segregated unit there were about 6 cells on the bottom floor and 6 on the top. Rod Matthews was the lone occupant of the first cell to the left. His cell had several cards and letters taped to the wall and I saw Rod looking into a vanity mirror secured to his right concrete wall and watched as he plucked his eyebrows. Attached to the from of his cell was a professionally made sign that I will never forget. The sign read " FOUR EYES ONLY ". I asked what this meant and was told by the 2 guards sitting across from his cell at a table , they said Rod is an underage inmate if anything happens to Rod the Commonwealth will never be able to place another underage person to an adult prison. I asked what happens when he reaches adulthood , they both motioned as if washing their hands indicating ....whatever happens will not be our problem. It was interesting to see his next door neighbor was another priceless state criminal , tiny beady eyed Daniel LaPlante. When the US Supreme Court ruled that children convicted of first degree murder cannot be sentenced to life without parole they opened the door to all these juvenile cold blooded killers to be set free. I have never had a problem with rulings of the Supreme Court and they typically render sound judgment but in regards to these two felons they missed the boat. Their decision to allow these two to someday walk free is a disgrace.

I am not trying to offend anyone by this either- I could be completely 100% wrong- but I like to investigate cases. Was Rod Matthews bullied? Was his home life truly rough? If he was a class clown surely he had a decent life? With all these shootings these days, I don't know what to believe anymore. If he started crying in the courtroom then surely he felt some remorse? There is no excuse for murdering someone because of bullying or home life problems but the evidence of a possible reaction to a powerful drug is possible. My heart goes out to Shaun and his spirit will carry on for the good in this world.

I went to Canton High, I knew Judy, met her brother several times with Cash fishing at the reservoir. Both families had issues, low income, drugs, social problems broken family. My personal opinion is that Mathews is a deviant and always was. Sorry Rod, but if you were "cured" you would not want to go on living with what you have done.

I left Canton in 1953, didn't,t know about this story till I saw it on "Ghost in my Child" a couple weeks ago. So sad. I lived near Pleasant St. On Prospect St. Used to go thru the woods there to get to Canton Resovoir , to fish off the wall by the Dam house.
